Recall - Replace Oil Filler Neck

FILE:

SERVICE: GROUP 00 OF SERVICE INFORMATION BINDER

PARTS: GROUP I OF INFORMATION _ PARTS & ACCESSORIES BINDER

Campaign No. 2010090002, September 2010

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS

SUBJECT:

Model 906, Model Years 2009 - 2010

Replace Oil Filler Neck

Daimler AG (DAG), the manufacturer of Sprinter vehicles, has determined that the spring plate, which is mounted at the oil filler neck and affixes it

to the cylinder head cover, may crack. Such a crack may result

in engine oil leaking into the engine compartment from the oil filler neck. In unfavorable circumstances, in addition to damage to the engine caused

by inadequate lubrication, the leakage of oil may also lead to

the accumulation of dirt in the engine compartment with subsequent soiling of the road surface which could lead to a vehicle crash.

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) therefore has initiated a recall of all potentially affected vehicles described above. The recall will be conducted

to replace the oil filler neck.

Attached is a sample copy of a letter which owners of the affected vehicles will receive.

Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

^ Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired.

^ Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.

Please note that Recall and Service Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

Approximately 2544 vehicles are affected.

Procedure

1. Remove oil filler cap (1, Figure 1) from filler neck (2).

2. Remove bolt (3, Figure 1).

3. Turn oil filler neck (2, Figure 1) counter-clockwise and remove from valve cover.

4. Clean mating surface (arrows, Figure 2) of valve cover with a shop rag.

Note:

Be careful not push any debris into engine that may be present on mating surface of valve cover.

5. Coat seal (4, Figure 1) on new oil filler neck (2) with motor oil then install new oil filler neck (2) onto valve cover in reverse order.

Note:

^ Ensure oil filler neck (2) is fully engaged.

SUBJECT:

MY-All, Model 902 with Engine 612, 903, 904, and 906 with Engine 642 and 647

Procedure for When Diesel Fuel Tank is Filled with Incorrect Fuel Type

If the above model diesel powered vehicles with a common rail injection system have been refueled with gasoline, kerosene, etc. and/or other

mixtures thereof, follow the steps below to remedy. In addition, biodiesel fuel above 5% (B5) in the fuel tank is not permitted for use in the above

model vehicles. Please follow the procedure below.

Note:

If the fuel tank is filled with the wrong type of fuel this may not be submitted as a warranty claim.

If the engine was NOT started after the fuel tank was filled with the wrong type of fuel, then emptying the tank and cleaning the fuel low-pressure

lines should be enough to resolve the problem.

If the engine was started after the fuel tank was filled with the wrong type of fuel, disconnect the Y-distributor unit (return line high pressure

pump/rail) at the output and with the ignition ON collect the fuel in

a clean container. Check fuel for shavings.

If there are no shavings in the injection system and the high pressure pump is not damaged, emptying the fuel tank, cleaning the low pressure lines

and changing the fuel filter should resolve the condition.

If metal shavings are found in the injection system and/or the high pressure pump is damaged, replace the following components to ensure there are

no metal particles in the fuel system. Refer to EPCNet for applicable part number.

a) Fuel Tank

b) Low Pressure fuel pump

c) Fuel Filter

d) High Pressure pump

e) Rail (Including Pressure regulating valve and the rail pressure sensor) f) High pressure lines and the leak lines

g) Injectors

The low pressure lines need to be thoroughly cleaned.

If there are no shavings in the injection system and the high pressure pump is damaged, the reason for the damaged high pressure pump must be

found and resolved prior to replacing the high pressure pump.

Checking Components for Bolted Wheel Connection

Incorrect installation of and/or incorrect contact surface cleaning methods of bolted wheel connections can lead to the loosening of the

To avoid this the wheel-and-tire assembly must be fitted following all operation steps that follow.

Procedure

A. Cleaning

2010 Mercedes Benz Truck Sprinter 3500 Cab (906.153) V6-3.0L DSL Turbo (642.898)

Page 142

1. Remove lubricants and soiling, such as oil, grease or sand from the following components:

^ Contact surfaces

^ Joints and centering on disk wheel

^ Wheel hub

^ Wheel flange

^ Brake disk

^ Brake drum

^ Spherical caps on disk wheel

^ Thread and radius seat of wheel bolts

^ Thread for wheel bolts and in wheel hub or wheel flange

2. Remove corrosion with a wire brush or emery cloth.

3. Clean any contaminated threads. Remove all corrosion and dirt from corroded threads using tap. There must be no damaged or missing threads.

Any dirt left in the thread prevents reaching specific torque value. The cleaned contact surface should look like Figure 4.

B. Inspecting

Page 143

1. Check the following for damage:

^ Contact surface, joints and center on disk wheel

^ Wheel hub

^ Wheel flange

^ Brake disk or brake drum

^ Spherical caps for deformity and rim flanges on disk wheel

^ Threads and radius seat of wheel bolts

^ Thread for wheel bolts in wheel hub or wheel flange

2. Replace wheel bolt or wheel flange if thread is damaged. Replace disk wheel, wheel flange, brake disk or brake drum if damaged.

3. Check radius seats of wheel bolt for signs of damage, scoring marks and material deposits. Replace any wheel bolts that are damaged, scored, or

have material deposits. Any remaining sizing marks or material deposits will prevent reaching specific torque value.

2010 Mercedes Benz Truck Sprinter 3500 Cab (906.153) V6-3.0L DSL Turbo (642.898)

Page 144

4. Apply corrosion protection. Apply a thin coating of long-life grease as corrosion protection to the marked area of the center hole guides (see

arrow, Figure 7) on the wheel hub, wheel flange, and wheel contact surface. Do not apply grease or any other lubricant to the threads of wheel bolts,

wheel hubs, wheel flanges, or wheel studs.

Complaint:

Noises after engine is switched off.

Cause:

The noises during engine run-on are caused by the cleaning function of the EGR valve.

Remedy:

No remedy required because the cleaning function is the series production configuration. Sample noises which correspond to the series production

configuration are attached.

Replacing the EGR valve may only be carried out if a corresponding fault code is entered in the engine control unit.

Reason for change

Complaint:

The load compartment sliding door catches or is difficult to operate.

The cable track of the load compartment sliding door is cracked, resulting in noises.

Cause:

Dirt from the cargo area (e.g. stones, packaging waste) gets jammed in the movement radius of the cable track, restricting the movement of the cable

track. The cable track can crack.

Remedy:

In order to minimize the amount of dirt entering the area of the load compartment sliding door cable track and to avoid damage to the cable track, a

foam section should be glued onto the load compartment sliding door (see attachment). The length of the foam section should be made to fit the

width of the load compartment sliding door.

^ Make sure that all foreign objects under the step are removed (vacuumed out). The cable track must be able to move properly.

^ Dirt and dust can also settle under the film on the floor panel below the cable track (see picture 10 and 11 in attachment). This area must also be

cleaned entirely.

It is not necessary to remove the door for this work!

Note:

The cable track must not be greased.

Check the setting of the lower sliding carriage and correct it if necessary.
