2019 Porsche Macan Gets A Turbocharged Four-Cylinder Engine




What changes make the 2017 Porsche Macan different? 49,000. There鈥檚 also a new value in Macan high performance via a GTS version slotted between the S and top-line Turbo models. All but the base use twin-turbocharged V-6 engines but every 2017 model gains more standard equipment, including new safety features and updated infotainment systems. This premium-compact crossover SUV shares some of its underskin hardware with the Audi Q5 (Porsche and Audi and subsidiaries of Volkswagen). Porsche adds its own design and engineering touches, though, to give the Macan a distinct personality. Why should I buy a 2017? 8,800 less. More standard equipment on all models is also a draw. It includes a new infotainment system with standard satellite and HD Radio receivers. Porsche used to charge extra for these items, which you鈥檒l often find as standard equipment on vehicles costing less than half as much. Ascending from the new entry-level model, the 鈥?7 Macan lineup consists of the S, sport-themed GTS, and high-performance Turbo versions. Is the styling different?





Not meaningfully. The Macan line bowed for model-year 2015 in S and Turbo guise. With its black exterior accents, matte lower-body finish, and dark-tinged 20-inch alloy wheels, the GTS represents the main styling alteration so far. It鈥檚 also distinguished by a sport suspension that lowers ride height 0.4 inches compared with the Turbo. The Turbo has its own look, too, particularly in details of the grille and front fascia; Every Macan has a familial resemblance to the brand鈥檚 other SUV, the premium-midsize-class Cayenne. At the back, you can see some of the Audi Q5鈥檚 influence, but Porsche has done a solid job making the Macan distinct from its corporate cousin. Yes. The Base model introduces to the line a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 252 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque; it鈥檚 the same engine used in some Audis, including the redesigned 2017 A4 sedan and Q5. The S returns with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 of 340 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque.





The GTS upgrades that to 360 and 369, respectively. Turbo models get a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6 with 400 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. All Macans use a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that behaves like a sport-calibrated conventional automatic. Also standard on all is a performance-tuned all-wheel drive (AWD) system. A number of wheel/tire combinations and other performance-enhancing upgrades are available. 1,385 on top of that upgrades it to an air suspension for all models. 2,930 extra for the other models. Does the fuel economy improve? Yes, thanks to the four-cylinder. EPA fuel-economy ratings for the 鈥?7 Macan line were unavailable in time for this review, but expect the Base model to rate around 19/27/22 mpg city/highway combined. The S and Turbo versions should return - somewhat remarkably, given their power differences - rating the same 17/23/19 mpg. Look for the GTS to better that by a smidge. Porsche will require premium-grade 91-octane gasoline for all.





Does it get new features? Yes. All 鈥?7 Macans get a new infotainment system with standard satellite and HD radio. Also newly standard across the board are a rearview camera, front- and rear-obstacle detection, and lane-departure warning. While the extra safety and convenience features are appreciated, there鈥檚 still a laundry list of options that will cost you plenty. How are 2017 prices different? 2,100 increases on the S and Turbo, respectively, over their 2016 counterparts. 125,000. It鈥檚 hard to be judicious since many desirable features cost so much extra. The steep price of entry is balanced somewhat by Porsche鈥檚 stellar reputation for reliability, resale value, and customer service. When does it come out? The 2017 Porsche Macan S, GTS, and Turbo are arriving at dealers now. What changes would make it better? Porsche is right to expand standard equipment, but we鈥檇 still like to see the automaker include even more content in base prices; it could begin with blind-spot alert and full leather upholstery. It鈥檚 difficult to fault the driving experience. Macan is arguably the most entertaining SUV of any kind. As a relatively affordable entry point, the four-cylinder should sell well and it鈥檚 handling is likely to be up to snuff, even if acceleration does less than full justice to the brand鈥檚 sporty image.

2019 Porsche Macan Road Test




When Porsche launched their first SUV back in 2004, brand loyalists howled. The idea that a carmaker rooted in building finely crafted, uncompromising sports cars would dilute the brand DNA with something so suburban and mainstream was simply too much for Porsche purists to bear. Fast forward a decade: The midsized Cayenne SUV is now Porsche's top-selling model and more than a few of those loyalists have found room for one alongside the 911 in their garage. More importantly, it opened the Porsche brand to a new breed of customer who never previously would have considered Stuttgart steel. With the Macan compact crossover, Porsche has broadened their SUV catalog. Targeted at competitors like the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, the Macan leans more toward sport than utility in the SUV equation. With handling, acceleration, and braking performance that put most sports sedans to shame, the Macan is easily the most thrilling SUV we've tested. The 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 in our Macan S delivers effortless power, mated to an automated manual transmission that fires off quick, decisive shifts punctuated by a race-ready exhaust bark. The BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, and Lexus NX don't even come close to that thrust.





For all its commitment to performance, the Macan still manages to deliver a measure of utility. Standard all-wheel drive and all-season tires make it a viable four-season vehicle, and the split-folding rear seats add cargo versatility. There's room for five friendly passengers in the quiet, luxurious, and impeccably finished interior, with comfortable and well-shaped seats up front. So, what's not to like? The Macan doles out rear seat room with the frugality of the Bundesbank. The same goes for the cargo area. Visibility is limited by a small rear window. As you would expect for a sports-car-meets-SUV, fuel economy is a thirsty 19 mpg overall. The Macan doesn't come cheap. Then again, what did you expect? It's a Porsche. Although the Macan has a base price a few pfennigs shy of 50 large, it is pretty much impossible to find one so equipped on dealer lots. 63,290 -- considerably more than any of its competitors. Adding a few options can drive up the price almost as quickly as the Macan accelerates. Even something as basic as a rear camera, standard on many mainstream cars, is a pricey option on the Macan. Still, if you categorize the Macan as a high-performance, all-wheel-drive hatchback, rather than a weekend workhorse for lumber runs, it is a very appealing, albeit pricey, package. And compared to some other Porsche models, it may even be something of a relative bargain.





Senior car industry figures were in London last week for the annual two-day Financial Times Future of the Car Summit. But when it came to the crunch question on whether he was aware that talks had taken place between PSA and JLR鈥檚 current owner Tata, Speth鈥檚 response was limp at best. His dedication to independence is admirable, in a way. But with car makers facing huge bills for developing EV technology, it鈥檚 hard to find anyone in the industry who thinks that JLR鈥檚 relative isolation makes any sense at all. Geely has taken a 50 per cent stake in the Smart city car brand from parent company Daimler, it has been confirmed. The pair will build a new generation of all-electric Smart models by 2022, with production taking place at Geely鈥檚 purpose-built factory in China. As part of its expansion strategy, Geely and Daimler will also broaden the Smart range into the B-segment market, producing a premium rival for the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo and Audi A1 Sportback, it has emerged. Until 2022, Daimler will continue to build the current Smart EQ ForTwo and EQ ForFour at its facilities in Hambach, France and Novo Mesto, Slovenia respectively. From 2022 Daimler鈥檚 Hambach plant will begin construction of a new EQ-branded compact electric car, following a 鈧?00 million investment by Mercedes-Benz. The Audi SQ5 has done rather well for itself scoring positive points in most reviews. Seen as how it鈥檚 a fast, techy and practical SUV, its success is easy to comprehend. It all starts with the 3.0-liter TFSI V6 unit underneath the hood, sending 354 PS to all four wheels, along with 500 Nm of torque. It can hit 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, and 96 km/h in 5.1 seconds. However, where some see handsomeness and elegance in its subdued looks, others see the need for something more accute. It鈥檚 not a bad-looking SUV, but it won鈥檛 get your attention either, unlike this version by Lumma Design. The tuner gave the SQ5 a more expressive attire, thanks to the addition of the CLR 5S body kit. It consists of a front spoiler extension, wheel arch extensions front and rear, integrated side skirt under-splitters, rear skirt extension, custom diffuser, custom door paneling, square exhaust pipes with the Lumma logo, custom wheels and an optional rear spoiler lip. All the parts are made from high quality PUR-RIM plastics and help give this SQ5 a considerably more menacing stance, from all angles.

New BMW I8 2019 Review




There鈥檚 enough tech alone with which to fill the next four pages, but it鈥檚 how the i8 drives that matters most. The way it behaves depends on which mode you pick: Eco Pro, Comfort or Sport. The first two are good for town cruising, where the 129bhp electric motor on the forward axle provides mostly front-wheel-drive performance. As with all electric cars, instant response and acceleration nearly match those of a Volkswagen Golf GTI. The rear-mounted 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo - which drives the back wheels - will kick in if you鈥檙e too hard on the accelerator, but on a full charge you can do 22 miles at up to 75mph on electric power alone. The engine itself is spectacular - BMW鈥檚 managed to make a tiny three-cylinder sound like a throaty V6. Another small electric motor in the rear boosts the engine - as well as acting as starter and generator - to help integrate it better with the other electric motor.





In Comfort or Eco Pro, and with all power sources working together, the i8 feels seriously fast and the powertrain seems extremely well sorted. There鈥檚 a subtle shunt as the engine kicks in, but other than that you鈥檇 have no idea that there was such a complicated process of gears, motors and engine constantly shuffling things around you. However, to get the most out of the i8 you need to choose Sport mode. As you knock the gear selector over to the left, the dials turn red and the i8 really comes alive. Throttle response is crisper and the powertrain altogether more responsive, while the six-speed automatic changes gear with more conviction and holds on to ratios for longer. You鈥檇 think there鈥檇 be erratic surges of acceleration, but instead everything works in perfect harmony to deliver a blisteringly smooth 4.4-second 0-62mph time. Engaging Sport also switches on the maximum amount of brake energy regeneration and turns the standard-fit adaptive dampers and power-steering to their most aggressive settings. Where you previously had a supple, comfortable ride and light steering, Sport mode weights up the latter and makes the former seem instantly firmer.





Yet the i8 still feels perfectly adept at dealing with potholes or large ridges without sending thuds and vibrations up through the base of your seat. In corners, sticking with Sport, you鈥檒l discover that the i8 has a character all of its own - nothing like a traditional M car. Those hefty, powerful, oversteering machines feel brutish compared with the delicate i8. There鈥檚 a real immediacy to the steering inputs, giving near-instant turn-in to bends with subtle feedback through the wheel. Pushing the i8 hard, you鈥檒l discover that it naturally wants to understeer, and you鈥檒l have to switch off all the traction control systems if you ever want to coax it into a slide. Even then, it鈥檒l take a fair amount of provocation. It鈥檚 not as lairy as a Porsche 911, but there鈥檚 a lot of pleasure to be gained from darting through sharp bends on the perfect line thanks to the great steering and superb body control. The brakes take a little getting used to, though, often requiring a firm push. The i8 feels like a sports car revolution. It delivers everything we鈥檝e come to expect from some of the best performance models out there - but with 135mpg economy and 49g/km CO2 emissions. It鈥檚 a definite game-changer, and while the hybrid Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder will each set you back around 拢1million, the i8 costs 鈥榦nly鈥?拢100,000 - or 拢99,845, to be exact. At that price it goes up against an established crop of supercars. Yet not only do you get the carbon fibre body, 4WD and hi-tech powertrain, there鈥檚 also 8.8-inch sat-nav, parking sensors, head-up display and a design that looks unlike anything else on the road. Is The 15 Grand Difference Between The Porsche Macan S And The GTS Really Justifiable




Porsche is kicking out more than 1000 units of the Macan to the US market every month. Not bad for a car company specialized in performance cars production. Porsche did lose the unique appeal it once had due to a sheer number of cars produced, but it still is a sort of a special brand in the industry. The Macan is not exactly the car Porsche fans craved after, but all others apparently did and Porsche delivered. The Cayenne passed the SUV genes down the line giving the Macan a proper look, and the personality associated with high-end Porsches. Now, the fun part starts. The Macan is about to receive a bunch of different versions in the next five years. Every Porsche does, so why leave the Macan out! After the Macan S and the Macan Turbo, the US car market recently became richer for the Macan GTS. We all know that the GTS is basically an upgrade over the S in the Porsche world.





Every car (except the 918 Spyder of course) is available with the GTS package. In short - it is like having a classic Porsche S car but with all dials turned up a few notches. Closing the gap between the Macan S and the Macan Turbo, the GTS received a few interesting touches. First up, the Porsche cranked up the power. 340 hp from the S became 360 hp, with the 339 lb-ft of torque going all the way up to 369 lb-ft of torque. Quite an impressive jump for the torque. Although, we are quite sure that this torque is available in short bursts when the pedal is pressed all the way down. Not that we have anything against it. As for some other elements, the Porsche Macan GTS took a whole lot from the Turbo. The seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission combined with the Traction Management system (PTM) is only a slightly recalibrated feature from the Turbo. The S has it too, but here it is a tad more ferocious as it is in the Turbo. Basically, the front wheels will definitely be more at work as the system is calibrated to send the power to it more often than usual. Coupling this with the increased power and optional Sport Chrono package gets us to a car capable of cracking 60 mph in 4,8 seconds. Fine for a compact SUV. Now, increasing the price from 52 grand to 67 grand is a bit daft from Porsche, but they give something in return. Not only did the engine get a power boost and suspension upgrade, but the cosmetics were changed, too. What you will not forget is the PCM (Porsche Communication Management system) with the Sound Package Plus (eight speakers, a USB and aux-in interface, SiriusXM and HD radio, and Bluetooth capability).





In fact, the 3.8 liter flat-six is even beefier than before with an extra 40 horsepower. But the very phrase 鈥渘atural-fibre鈥?has a nice, environmental tone about it. And that鈥檚 enough for most people. The 2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport comes in two 鈥淭rackday鈥?and 鈥淐ompetition鈥?variants. Just get a Cayenne or a Panamera for daily driving, and a Cayman GT4 or a track version of the 911 for driving fun. A regular Cayman is like a fine cigarette, whereas this Clubsport model is a full Churchill-sized Cuban cigar paired with a double espresso!





A facelifted version of the BMW X1 has been revealed. Changes to the brand鈥檚 entry-level SUV include tweaked looks, fresh technology, and a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time. You鈥檒l need to step up to the 20i model for xDrive all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox (from 拢33,475), while diesels cost from 拢30,545 (sDrive18d SE). The range tops out at 拢38,145 for an xDrive20d M Sport. All models apart from the PHEV are available to order now; the plug-in goes on sale in March, priced from around 拢35,000. There are SUVs from old-school sports car builders everywhere these days, sure, but if you鈥檙e old enough you probably remember when the very idea was shocking. Porsche shocked first way back in 2003 with the Cayenne, then followed up with the compact, even more accessible Macan 12 years later. The Macan still comes as close to a purist's automotive appliance as Porsche gets. Five years after it broke cover, the Macan is Porsche鈥檚 best-selling vehicle, to no one鈥檚 genuine surprise. Yet the 2019 Macan represents its most substantial revision since it launched as a 鈥?5. Let鈥檚 call this a moderate update refining a successful formula, rather than a significant change, and from the driver鈥檚 perspective that ain鈥檛 bad at all. This so-called SUV may be the all-things-to-everyone Porsche, but the Macan remains one of the best driving utilities you can get your hands on. There are no structural changes under the 鈥?9 Macan鈥檚 sheetmetal and no change to its track, driver鈥檚 hip height or its 110.5-inch wheelbase.





Screen size isn't the only trick in the A6; in Europe, the sedan can be started without a key鈥攋ust an Android smartphone. It's unclear if that last feature makes the trip across the pond but it's worth noting that when the 2019 Audi A8 was announced, it included self-driving features that weren't yet entirely legal for U.S. Audi, along with other carmakers, led a congressional push for exceptions that paved the way for those features in the A8. Aside from acts of Congress, the A6 includes available safety features such as active lane control and adaptive cruise control, parking assist, vehicle-to-infrastructure hardware, and a raft of sensors and cameras that could help the A6 avoid crashes. Inside, the A6 is larger with more room for passengers and cargo, and interior lighting in up to 30 different shades. Audi notes that the trunk of the A6 will hold two golf bags simultaneously. The A6 sports conservative styling next to the A7, and the overall look is evolutionary for the sedan. Following cues from the A4 and A5, the A6 is sharper than its predecessor with deeper creases and a bulging hood. Audi skipped the A4/A5's clamshell hood opening for the A6, but the larger sedan offers exterior lighting borrowed from tonier models. The A6 has its own lighting "signature" in the front and rear that takes cues from the larger cars, although it's unclear if the A6 will offer the same startup routine as the bigger sedans. The A6 should make its first appearance at the 2018 Geneva auto show next month and will go on sale in Germany in June.





What's under the Porsche Macan's bonnet? As with other Porsche models, the diesel engine option has quietly disappeared from price-lists. So, the base-model Macan gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 185kW of power and 370Nm of torque. The Macan S gets a 3.0-litre V6 engine with 260kW and 480Nm. Aside from the capacity and cylinder-count, the big difference is in the way turbocharging has been applied to the engines. While the four-cylinder has a single-scroll turbocharger, the V6 gets a twin-scroll unit which is mounted inside the engine鈥檚 vee for swifter throttle response and faster light-off times for the catalytic converter. Both engines make use of Porsche VarioCam variable valve lift and timing system which increases the spread of useable power. Our launch drive of the Macan involved just the S model, so we can鈥檛 tell you what the base-model four-cylinder is like. But the V6 is impressive in terms of its outright urge without ever feeling as though it will overpower the platform. The V6 is at its best on full throttle when it develops a proper snarl and gives forth plenty of mid-range grunt served up in a refined way. If you listen carefully, you might also hear (and feel) a degree of less-than-silkiness in the form of a slightly grainy sound between about 2500 and 3000rpm at moderate throttle inputs. Porsche鈥檚 techs reckon what you鈥檙e hearing is the operation of the turbo鈥檚 wastegate that now, instead of being located low down in the engine bay, is now sat almost in your lap, just the other side of the dashboard.

A few years back, on a Porsche Club of America driving tour of the great mountain roads that surround Asheville, North Carolina, I witnessed a near divorce. We were pushing kinda fast that day, to be honest probably too fast. Suddenly one of the other cars pulled off. We didn't see them again until evening. Seems the guy's wife took exception to the overall speed, and general nature of our motoring activities. My wife Lynne was along for that trip. She enjoyed herself completely, did some of the driving and took video during the faster, curvy sections. I'm lucky. Lynne gets it. I married a car girl. Lynne's Sprite was a Mark II, not a Bugeye. Growing up in Raleigh, on Saturday mornings Lynne's dad would take her downtown to see the new foreign cars at Harmon Roland Motors. While his tastes went generally to big Chryslers, she was drawn to sports cars from the start, as was her sister Nancy.





I wish I had known her then, blond hair blowing as she flew down Dixie Trail or zipped across the old narrow Lake Johnson bridge. Lynne's first husband tried to hand her the keys to a Ford Aerostar minivan. She drove it once. Over the years she went through VW Cabrios, a Plymouth Laser (I had an Eagle Talon about the same time, essentially the same car), and briefly a brown Pinto. A low point to be sure. She was driving a Ford Contour SE when I met her. Hard to remember now, but the performance version of the Contour was a heck of a sport sedan for the time. We bonded over cars early. On one of our first dates, driving through the Five Points neighborhood of Raleigh I spied an old MG parked on a side street. I would have married her right there, by the old Piggly Wiggly, if the deli counter guy could have presided over the ceremony.





Before we married I had sold my Contour SE (yes, we both had the same model of car鈥攈er's had leather), and bought a 1996 Mazda Miata M-Edition for us to share. Lynne loved that car, stealing it every chance she got. We took some great trips in it too; Wrightsville Beach, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Washington DC via back roads. It was our first sports car together, but far from our last. Lynne encouraged me to return to Porsche ownership and we shared first a 944 S2, then a 968, and finally our current Carrera. When I was searching for a Carrera she specifically asked if we could get a red one. How many husbands get to hear their wives say that? Over the past ten years she has developed an appreciation for BMWs, starting with an E90 330i sedan. She had me cold. I didn't have a good answer. I took over the X3 and found her a 2005 BMW 330i convertible. So now my lovely wife has come full circle, once again zipping around Raleigh in her little black sports car. Too bad they replaced that twisty narrow bridge over Lake Johnson. And she will get behind the wheel of that car again soon.

The Macan's 295/40R20 rear tires are considerably wider than its 265/45R20 front rubber. Traditionally, staggered fitment like this is the territory of sports cars where it's done to create balanced handling. 2019 Porsche Cayenne Platinum Edition




Porsche is upgrading the Cayenne six-cylinder model via a special series known as the Platinum Edition. The Platinum Edition Cayenne and Cayenne Diesel models feature some especially high-quality equipment and offer many of the most-requested options as standard. Externally, the special status of these models is demonstrated by the numerous detailed paint finishes in Platinum Silver Metallic, while an elegant ambience has been created in the interior with exclusive two-tone fittings. Porsche only assigns the Platinum Edition designation to its exclusive, elegant vehicle ranges that are available for a limited period only. The enhanced equipment range available in these vehicles is designed to increase comfort and safety in particular. For example, the Cayenne Platinum Edition models feature the eight-gear Tiptronic S, Bi-Xenon main headlights and Power Steering Plus, as well as the ParkAssist system at the front and rear as standard. The automatic anti-dazzle interior mirrors eliminate the dazzle from traffic behind the vehicle and the privacy glazing (also available as standard) protects the rear passengers from unwanted attention.





Painted in Platinum Silver Metallic, the lateral and central air intake grill fins, the side window strips, the rear spoiler lip and the trim strip on the tailgate create a shimmering effect. The standard colour range includes monotone paint finishes in Black and White, and Meteor Grey Metallic, Basalt Black Metallic and Mahogany Metallic are available as further colour options. The Carrara White Metallic paint finish is also an option available exclusively for this Cayenne edition. The look is rounded off by the 19-inch Cayenne Design II wheels with coloured crest. The Black/Luxor Beige two-tone combination, reserved for this special edition, creates an exclusively elegant ambience in the interior. The vehicles come with a partial leather interior as standard, but a full leather interior is also available as an option. The floor mats, with Luxor Beige edging and Porsche logo, and the front door entry guards with the "Platinum Edition" logo, represent further highlights. The standard SportDesign steering wheel with shift paddles and the embossed Porsche crest on the headrests at the front and rear emphasise the high quality of the vehicle. The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, including a navigation module, is also a standard feature: The PCM includes a high-resolution seven-inch touchscreen and a sound system with 11 loudspeakers and total power of 235 watt. The Cayenne Platinum Edition offers an output of 300 hp (220 kW). In combination with the Tiptronic S, the vehicle's NEDC fuel consumption is 9.9 litres/100 km (236 g/km CO2). The three litre V6 engine in the Cayenne Diesel Platinum Edition offers an output of 245 hp (180 kW) and a fuel consumption level of 7.2 litres of diesel over 100 kilometres (189 g/km CO2). The Cayenne Platinum Edition costs 鈧?6,379 and it is 鈧?7,212 for the Cayenne Diesel Platinum Edition (including VAT).





On the safety front, standard systems include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beam and road sign assist. Available active safety and convenience features are adaptive full speed cruise control, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert and rear-end collision warning. As for the infotainment part, the 2020 Supra brings a standard 6.5-inch display operated by a rotary controller on the center console. The 3.0 Premium grade gets an 8.8-inch touchscreen display with navigation, rotary touch controller, Supra Connect telematics services, wireless Apple CarPlay, a premium 12-speaker JBL audio system, and wireless phone charging. 55,250 for the Launch Edition, which will be the sole trim level initially available in a limited run of 1,500 units. Sales in the U.S. Launch Edition will be offered in Absolute Zero White, Nocturnal Black or Renaissance Red 2.0 paint jobs, with contrasting red mirror caps and 19-inch black matte forged alloys. The first two will get a red leather interior, while the third color option a black one, both with carbon accents. Moreover, the limited run Supras will get a plaque on the passenger鈥檚 side of the dashboard with the car鈥檚 serial numbers along with a graphic of Toyota鈥檚 CEO Akio Toyoda鈥檚 signature.





Although it鈥檚 been quite some time since Aston Martin had a six-cylinder in its range, it appears that the upcoming Aston Martin DBX crossover could be offered with a six-cylinder engine. During a recent event with Australian media, chief creative officer Marek Reichman suggested that a six-cylinder engine from Mercedes-Benz could suit the DBX quite well. While it remains to be seen which Mercedes six-cylinder Aston Martin could be given access to, one likely powertrain would be the M256 turbocharged 3.0-liter petrol inline six recently introduced with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. While this powertrain isn鈥檛 as exciting as the V8 and V12s currently used by Aston, it can produce upwards of 382 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, figures more than adequate for everyday use. While it remains to be seen whether Aston Martin will opt to use such an engine, we do know for sure that the DBX will be the marque鈥檚 first model to be available with a hybrid powertrain. According to the most recent reports, this variant could pair AMG鈥檚 twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with an electric motor offering up 200 hp. Combined, this could give the hybrid DBX more than 700 hp, making it even more powerful than the Lamborghini Urus. At least one other traditional gasoline-powered model will join the potential six-cylinder DBX. This powertrain will either be the 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 used by the DB11 and producing roughly 600 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque in DBX guise or the aforementioned AMG twin-turbo V8 but without any electrical assist.

Still, Porsche鈥檚 signature exhaust symphony burbles through the tailpipes and sounds strikingly similar to any one of Porsche鈥檚 coupes. The standard exhaust system adjusts to deliver a more noticeable growl during higher engine loads and in Sport mode. Not all鈥檚 good in the neighborhood: There鈥檚 a slight lag in initial accelerator response when accelerating from a stop, even in Sport mode.





The delay isn鈥檛 very Porsche-like, and it鈥檚 annoying when you want to move from a stop with vigor. One area in which there isn鈥檛 much delay is the seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission鈥檚 shifts. This Porsche Doppelkupplung transmission shifts unbelievably quickly, with 911-like levels of shifting action in automatic mode and from the steering-wheel-mounted paddles. Given the Macan鈥檚 size, its EPA-estimated gas mileage is unimpressive at 17/23/19 mpg city/highway/combined. That鈥檚 closer to the larger BMW X6 xDrive35i (18/24/20 mpg) and GLE450 AMG Coupe (17/23/20 mpg) than it is to the X4鈥檚 19/27/22 mpg and the Evoque鈥檚 21/30/24 mpg. The Macan鈥檚 sport-tuned suspension is never uncomfortable like the rough-riding BMW, though I wouldn鈥檛 call the Macan 鈥渃omfortable鈥? our test car had standard coil springs and fixed-firmness shock absorbers. But a slightly busy ride at highway speeds is a completely fair tradeoff for how well the Macan handles, and a little body motion in aggressive cornering doesn鈥檛 take away too much from its dynamic personality.

However, the driver aids will also intervene to assist the driver in this mode if a predefined dynamic limit is exceeded. Deactivating DSC (through DSC off) gives the driver the chance to fully explore the car鈥檚 dynamic limits on the track and nudge the car into power oversteer (i.e. a drift) using the accelerator. In this mode, the system will only introduce brake inputs in extreme situations involving significant shifts in lateral acceleration. To say the newly developed engine of the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M has a pounding heartbeat would be something of an understatement. After all, the 4.4-litre V8 uses innovative M TwinPower Turbo technology - consisting of cross-bank exhaust manifolds, a pair of TwinScroll turbochargers, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection and VALVETRONIC - to push torque and output to higher levels still.





This unrivalled combination ensures that a strong wave of torque is maintained from low revs and allows the engine to impress with its direct and rapid responses, vivacious appetite for revs, linear power delivery and customary M soundtrack. The peak output of the new M turbocharged engine powering the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M is, at 423 kW/575 hp, four per cent higher than that of its predecessor and is available between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm. At the same time, the engine鈥檚 peak torque has been boosted by around 10 per cent to 750 Nm (553 lb-ft), which can be enjoyed across an extremely broad rev band - from 2,200 to 5,000 rpm. The extraordinary power development of this M turbocharged engine allows the new M versions of the BMW X5 and BMW X6 to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 4.2 seconds. The top speed of both is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). 20 per cent over their predecessors.

At this point, all the F1 teams on the grid have revealed their new cars for the season ahead. That includes Red Bull, which showcased its new RB14 during a filming stint at Silverstone last week, wearing a blue digital-camo livery. Now that the team has arrived in Barcelona for the first official test session of the season, it鈥檚 revealed the actual color scheme it will wear this year. And it looks pretty much as you might have expected. Those are the same navy, red, and yellow the team has worn for the last thirteen years now since first arriving on the grid. And they鈥檙e rendered in the same matte finish it embraced three seasons ago. This time, though, the livery features more prominent branding from title-sponsor Aston Martin, which has been stepping up its partnership with the team. The British automaker doesn鈥檛 furnish the engine, though - at least not yet. Instead that鈥檚 provided, once again, by Renault, and rebranded by TAG Heuer - not unlike the TAG-branded Porsche engines that McLaren ran back in the mid-Eighties. That was when it had world-class drivers like Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, and Keke Rosberg - world champions all - behind the wheel. For its part, Red Bull hasn鈥檛 won the championship since Sebastian Vettel left for Ferrari. Could this finally be the year in which it surpasses Mercedes to seal the title? We鈥檒l just have to wait and see. But you can bet that Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen will be giving it their all.





Testers鈥?notes: 鈥淭he Golf鈥檚 1.5-litre TSI engine is the only four-cylinder unit here. The 10th-generation Honda Civic impressed in 2017 thanks to its engaging handling and spacious interior. The sporty Type R version is our favourite hot hatch, and its DNA filters down into this standard model. Here we鈥檙e testing the 1.0-litre version in EX trim, which starts from 拢23,615 (although our pictures show an SR model). Honda has followed the industry trend of downsizing its engines for the latest Civic, so this one is powered by a 1.0-litre petrol motor with a turbocharger to improve power and torque lower down in the rev range. It鈥檚 punchy from 2,250rpm, where the maximum torque is delivered from, and feels able to keep up with its larger-capacity rivals on the road, although it did trail them in some of our performance tests. It was half a second slower from 0-60mph than the Golf, with a time of 10.1 seconds.





However, the Honda was only a tenth behind the VW in the 30-70mph sprint and two tenths faster than the 308, helped by that lovely, accurate gearbox. The close figures show that there鈥檚 not too much difference in terms of performance between our three rivals, but the Honda does have the advantage here for keen drivers because it鈥檚 the most fun car. The low driving position is comfortable and feels sporty, while the steering is well weighted and fast in its response, offering the best feel. There鈥檚 lots of grip on offer and the clever torque vectoring technology helps the car hold its line through corners. It鈥檚 well controlled in terms of body roll thanks to the dampers鈥?sportier setting, and the Honda is more agile than either rival in this test as a result. In comfort mode it鈥檚 refined and smooth, with a relatively compliant ride, although our noise tests showed the Civic was a little louder at 70mph than its rivals.





The 1.0-litre turbo sits at higher revs at that speed, which contributes to that extra noise. Testers鈥?notes: 鈥淭he Honda has the smallest fuel tank of the three cars here, at 46 litres. It鈥檚 a very close result between these three family hatchbacks, but the Golf is so good in so many areas that it will make the most sense for more people. It鈥檚 comfortable, refined, good to drive, well equipped and great value, and the latest infotainment system is one of the best on the market at any price. The Golf manages all that while still being practical enough for most owners. The latest Civic isn鈥檛 as well rounded as the Golf, while its infotainment system is a real letdown, but it鈥檚 more practical and fun to drive than the VW. It finishes ahead of the 308 thanks to lower running costs and engaging handling, while its performance is strong enough to match the 308. Although it鈥檚 not as polished as the VW, it鈥檚 still refined and comfortable.





The 308 is practical and stylish, but not as accomplished as the Golf, so it loses out here. It鈥檚 not as good to drive as the Civic, and although the list price is competitive, Peugeot鈥檚 PCP deals can鈥檛 match Honda鈥檚. The PureTech is the best engine of the three and the 308 performed well, but it trails on value, while its updated infotainment isn鈥檛 enough of an improvement. With its solid driving dynamics, strong comfort and impressive space, the Vauxhall Astra is worth a look. The 1.4-litre petrol in Elite Nav trim is good value, because it鈥檚 as well kitted out as our pricier test cars. You also get more power. The 1.2-litre petrol Megane is a match for the three contenders in our test, and it鈥檚 nearly as well equipped as the Astra, too. In addition, the Renault has style on its side, and offers something different again in this class.

LED brake lights are a new design element which not only look great, but also give clear message to other drivers. LED lights in the side mirrors make other drivers aware of your intention to change lanes. This is the Porsche Crest on the hood. RS Spyder design wheels give a sporty appearance. 4 Point LED headlamps are part of the Porsche Identity. They also offer a daylight like lighting effect at night. Less blue, more natural. The spacious cabin is complimented by some of the most comfortable seats on the market. Everything in the interior design is driver/passenger focused. The raised center console has one touch buttons that are intuitive and within easy reach. The analog clock is a great design element which also tells time. Dual climate control for maximum comfort. USB jack and audio jack with charger in the center console storage bin. The Bose audio system sounds great. 40.20.40 split in the back, and the seats lock into place when folded down. The cross bars for the roof rack come with the car. When the seats are folded down, there is ample room for storage.





Lamborghini has unsurprisingly followed up the debut of the new Huracan Evo with the reveal of its drop-top companion: the new Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder. The convertible supercar will make its full introduction at the Geneva Motor Show next week. Sitting behind the driver and passenger is a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10, developing 631bhp and 600Nm of torque - exactly the same as the coupe. In practice, and with so much power being sent to the all-wheel-drive system from the V10 engine, the Huracan Evo Spyder is only marginally slower than the coupe. The convertible roof itself opens up via a button positioned on the central tunnel. The roof folds away in 17 seconds and this can be done at speeds up to 31mph, stowing the roof out of view in a compartment consistent with the Huracan鈥檚 body lines. When the roof is raised, the rear window can be lowered on its own, removing a key obstacle between the V10 engine and the driver鈥檚 eardrums. Given the model鈥檚 different shape to the coupe, the Huracan Evo Spyder features a unique rear deck.





However, the rest of the car uses the new bodykit introduced on the hard top car, with the same new front and rear bumpers and the same aerodynamic tweaks. To go with the additional power, drivetrain revisions include a new rear-wheel steering system and four-wheel torque vectoring, as well as Lamborghini鈥檚 new Dinamica Veicolo Integrata (LDVI) central processing unit. This allows the chassis to be tailored to the driver鈥檚 preferences through drive modes and specific chassis and powertrain settings. In the cabin a new 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system appears, but Lamborghini also says that cabin airflow has been altered too, so that the Huracan Evo Spyder is less blustery and quieter in the cockpit than its predecessor. After the Huracan Evo Spyder appears in Geneva next week it鈥檒l go on sale later on in the spring. Prices will start at 拢181,781 before VAT. Add 20 per cent for VAT and a 拢5,000 delivery fee, and on the road the new Huracan Evo Spyder will set prospective buyers back 拢196,000 when it arrives in the UK. In 1974, precisely 40 years ago, the first generation VW Scirocco made its debut at the Geneva International Motor Show. The coupe has since enriched the lives of all those motorists who love dynamic performance in an agile, confidently stylish, and affordable sports car. Once again at the recent Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen presented the latest generation of the icon which has sold more than one million units. The all-new Volkswagen Scirocco has been developed further both technically and visually.
