Included in the Performance Package as standard will be: a sports exhaust, the Sport Chrono Package (鈥渟portier tuning of chassis, engine and transmission鈥濃€娾€斺€奝orsche), with lowered suspension and controlled sports chassis. A UK firm has demonstrated what it claims is the world鈥檚 first electric vehicle (EV) charger based on hydrogen fuel cell technology. Surrey-based AFC Energy鈥檚 C2HARGE hydrogen-powered rapid chargers are capable of charging an average EV to 80 per cent capacity in less than an hour, all without having to tap into the National Grid. EV owners using the C2HARGE system would only see a conventional-looking electric car charger, with much of the tech hidden in the background. Hydrogen for the chargers would be delivered via tanker and stored at the charging station in on-site tanks, before being converted into electricity by a hydrogen fuel cell. Electricity generated by that fuel cell is then fed into a 40kW battery, from which EV owners draw the charge for their cars. On the road, we noted in a 2017 First Test that the Macan GTS drives just like one would expect out of a Porsche, offering confident handling and quick acceleration with its twin-turbo V-6. However, some issues caused the Macan GTS to place third in a recent comparison test to the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 and the Jaguar F-Pace S, which was the winner. Its cabin, for instance is cramped and the seats give up too much comfort in the name of sporty driving, and it felt out of its element on the highway. Surprisingly the Macan GTS鈥?twin-clutch automatic isn鈥檛 as polished as it is on other Porsche vehicles, shifting harshly and sometimes interrupting power delivery. The twin-turbo V-6 also suffers from turbo lag and runs out of power the closer you get to its redline.

The changes are pretty significant for a facelift. Up front, Porsche added a lot of features that are based on the 911. The headlamps, for instance, now feature the four-point LED lighting pattern we鈥檝e seen on every other Porsche available right now. These headlamps are standard on every trim level. The intakes below have also been revised. The center vent now has horizontal slats only, while the side outlets are bigger and have wider slats. The smaller side vents below are also longer, while the center opening is almost perfectly rectangular. All these new elements give the Macan a wider, sportier stance. Finally, the apron is larger and almost as sharp as a full-fledged splitter. The profile remains virtually identical save for the wheels, which can be had in new designs and 20- and 21-inch sizes. You can also opt for extra customizing features, such as a black dent in the lower doors, black window trim, or carbon-fiber mirror caps.

Around back, the Macan remains unchanged above the taillights, but the latter are brand-new. On top of the recently introduced four-point design, they also feature Porsche鈥檚 new, three-dimensional LED strip with "Porsche" letters. We鈥檝e seen this feature on the 911 and the Panamera and it鈥檚 a sign that it鈥檚 becoming a trademark element for the German brand. The diffuser also features minor changes, but by far the most important is the new tailpipe setup with round outlets on each side. Four new exterior colors are available for the revised Macan, including the cool Miami Blue you see here, Mamba Green Metallic, Dolomite Silver Metallic, and Crayon. Updates inside the cabin are significant too. The first thing that catches the eye is the new infotainment display, which now measure 11 inches, four inches more than the old unit. The revised Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system offers access to new digital functions, such as intelligent voice control and the online navigation system and enabled Porsche to eliminate some of the buttons in the center stack for a cleaner look.

In order to fit the larger display in the center stack, Porsche had to redesign and reposition the A/C vents. While these flanked the screen in the old model, they鈥檙e now much smaller and placed right above the center console in the revised SUV. Another important change is the sportier GT steering wheel. Based on the one from the 911 sports car, the new steering wheel features revised controls and it can be equipped with a mode switch and the Sport Response Button. Both are part of the optional Sports Chrono Package that increases performance and adds the analog clock on the dashboard. Porsche made further upgrades in the equipment department, but most new features, like the Traffic Jam Assist, the ionizer, and the heated windscreen, are optional. The new Traffic Jam Assist feature includes adaptive cruise control, which provides a more comfortable and relaxed drive at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph). The system includes partially automated acceleration and braking functions, and it also assists with steering in slow-moving traffic. Porsche also included a Connect Plus module, which underpins various digital functions and services such as intelligent voice control and the real-time traffic information.

As usual, you can choose from a wide range of features from the Porsche Exclusive division to customize the interior. The offer includes new trim and upholstery options, including carbon-fiber and fine leather. Under-the-hood upgrades are less significant, or at least that鈥檚 what I鈥檓 getting from the company鈥檚 press release. Porsche only talks of an optimized chassis and fine-tuning that delivers "enhanced neutrality while maintaining stability and improving comfort." The crossover also features newly developed tires that improve grip and lateral dynamics. There isn鈥檛 much information on engine upgrades, but as it turns out the standard, turbocharged 2.0-liter is a bit less powerful than before. Because of new emissions regulations, the mill was fitted with a particulate filter that has reduced power from 252 to 245 horsepower. However, torque the same as before at 273 pound-feet. Despite the seven-horsepower drop, the new Macan is a bit faster to 62 mph. The crossover needs 6.7 seconds to get there, versus the 6.9-second benchmark of its predecessor. Top speed dropped form 143 to 139 mph. Next up is the Macan S, which draws its juice from a twin-turbo, 3.0-liter V-6 that generates 356 horses and 339 pound-feet of twist.

Hitting 62 mph takes 5.2 seconds, while top speed is limited to 156 mph. Finally, there鈥檚 the Macan Turbo, powered by a twin-turbo, 3.6-liter V-6 engine. The mill cranks out 400 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, pushing the crossover from 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, to go with a top speed of 164 mph. This model can be optioned up with a Performance Package, which raises output to 440 horses and 443 pound-feet. This version needs only 4.2 clicks to hit 62 mph, while top speed is rated at 168 mph. A diesel model is also available in Europe and other markets, but there鈥檚 no info on upgrades here. Up until now There was a base model rated at 211 horsepower and 428 pound-feet and a more powerful version that delivers 258 horses and 428 pound-feet. Both were motivated by a 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel engine. All Macan models feature a seven-speed PDK transmission and all-wheel drive. Options include an air suspension and the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system. At the 2018 Paris Motor Show, Porsche revealed pricing for European markets only.

A lot of people scoffed at the idea of a Porsche SUV when the Cayenne was introduced back in the early 2000s, but Porsche has had the last laugh, practically creating an entire market segment of performance luxury SUVs. The Cayenne鈥檚 success was so substantial for Porsche鈥檚 bottom line that a smaller, lower priced SUV was announced earlier this decade. Called the Macan, it is now both Porsche鈥檚 best-selling model and its cheapest. 50,000, the Macan is an even more affordable way to get into a new Porsche than the Boxster. Not much changes from the 2017 model year since this is a still fairly new model, and trims still include Base, S, GTS, and Turbo. For a small SUV, the Macan is remarkably quick and fun to drive in any trim, and downright fast in Turbo spec. Base models get a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that was added to the lineup in 2017, and it makes 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The Macan S gets a twin-turbocharged V-6 that makes 340 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque, while the GTS gets the same engine that has been tweaked for 360 hp.

The Macan Turbo isn鈥檛 the only turbocharged version, but its twin-turbo V-6 gets 400 hp or even 440 hp when ordered with the Performance Package, which also comes with sports exhaust. Properly equipped Macan Turbos will do 0-60 miles per hour in well under five seconds. All Macans get a PDK transmission and all come with all-wheel drive (AWD). While it is a luxury SUV, at the end of the day the Macan is still a Porsche, and Porsche didn鈥檛 forget its roots when designing it. The Macan handles surprisingly well and is remarkably fun to drive in any spec, be it a base four-cylinder or a loaded Macan Turbo. Most Macans get conventional steel suspension, but higher models can be had with air suspension and adaptive dampers. With only seating for five and a less than cavernous interior, the Macan isn鈥檛 a true family hauler, but it will transport a handful of people in style.

The fit and finish as well as the quality of the materials is top notch, and there鈥檚 a substantial options list to jazz things up even further. Options include 18-way power seats with heating and cooling and a 14-speaker stereo. Tri-zone automatic climate control, 10-speaker stereo and 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen are standard. The Macan will hold 17.7 cubic feet of cargo with the seats up, and this expands to 53 cubic feet when they鈥檙e folded. While the Macan hasn鈥檛 been crash tested, it comes with optional safety features like lane-departure warnings, blind-spot monitors, and a surround view camera. Sure, some competitors are more affordable and practical, but they don't cast a spell on their drivers in the same way that the Porsche does. It truly sets the bar for what crossovers can be. The 2019 Porsche Macan is updated for this year and features refreshed exterior styling that includes updated front and rear bumpers, new taillamps that span the width of the liftgate, and new wheel designs. The Macan's EPA ratings are very similar to those of its competitors, although a few rivals have better numbers on the highway.

Once we get the updated Macan and Macan S into our garage for testing, we'll send both on our 200-mile real-world fuel-economy test route to see how the EPA's ratings hold up under normal operating conditions. Likes: Upscale features and materials are available鈥攆or a price; more practical than Porsche's sports cars. We fit six carry-on bags in the cargo bay and 16 with the rear seats folded, which should be enough for most people. The Macan hasn't been tested by either crash-test agency (nor has any other Porsche currently on sale, for that matter). The Macan can be had with a wide array of driver-assistance technology, but almost none of it is standard.

As you might imagine, the Audi Q5 and Porsche Macan are more than a little related since both start on the VW Group's modular MLB platform. But what Porsche uses under the Macan is MLB in name only. It's better in manual mode than every automatic, and just as good at self-shifting as any gearbox out there.
