Nissan GT-R First Look Review

Godzilla has been made over many times in his movie career, and now his four-wheeled compatriot is also getting a big makeover. With new looks and greater performance, the 2017 Nissan GT-R is far and away the biggest update to Godzilla since it made its debut nearly 10 years ago.
"Nissan has always felt that it's nailed the R part of the GT-R's name since its 2009 launch, but has placed a bigger emphasis on the GT aspect for the 2017 update. Or as Nissan North America product planner Bob Munson puts it, ""We're trying to give the thoroughbred racehorse some more manners."" As such, the most significant changes are visual. After years of small, evolutionary tweaks, Nissan has made big changes to the front and rear of the car to bring it up to date with the company's latest styling language. This means an all-new front bumper, grille, and hood, new side sills, and a new rear bumper with a prominent diffuser and functional vents. New 20-inch forged aluminum wheels finish the look. Nissan claims the new bodywork increases aerodynamic efficiency and downforce, though it retains the same 0.26 coefficient of drag."
Even greater work has been done inside, where Nissan has completely revamped the GT-R's interior. The dashboard and center stack are all-new and complemented by a new instrument cluster wrapped in a single piece of leather. The center stack now sports an 8-inch touchscreen (up from 7) that can now also be controlled by a new Display Command controller on the center console. The rest of the stack has been simplified to just 11 buttons, down from the old car's 27. The infotainment screen's interface is also somewhat simplified; it now features large icons for easy operation.
Nissan has fitted a new steering wheel and relocated the paddle shifters from the column to the wheel itself, taking care to make sure the new paddles still feel and sound right. The seats also feel better and are lighter. Weight was also saved by thinning the cushion padding beneath the dashboard's leather surface.
Not all of the car's padding is thinner, though. The new car gets additional sound-deadening materials and an acoustic glass windshield to reduce noise. The transmission has also been quieted, and the titanium exhaust now features a valve to hush it on command. The GT-R gets active noise cancelling technology, as well.
The changes extend beyond the cosmetic. The twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V-6 has been updated with parts from the old GT-R NISMO, booting power to 565 hp and 467 lb-ft of torque (improvements of 20 hp and 4 lb-ft) thanks to more boost and individual timing control for each cylinder. In addition to the greater peaks, the changes are said to improve midrange- and high-rpm power, giving Godzilla a beefier torque curve. Nissan says that new exhaust, when the driver chooses to open it, sounds better, too. The improved engine is paired to an improved six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which has had its shifting behavior smoothed out for everyday driving, but it's still aggressive with your foot to the floor. With the GT-R's curb weight still around 3,900 pounds and only minor power gains, don't expect the lightning-quick 0-60 performance to change too much from the old car's 2.7-2.9-second performance.
Nissan did a bit of work under the body, as well, stiffening the chassis to more effectively use the lightly reworked suspension. Thanks to the changes, Nissan says the new GT-R both rides better and goes around a corner quicker.
To top off the deal, Nissan is adding the new Blaze Metallic paint option to all models and three new interior color options if you buy a Premium Edition model. Cars equipped with NissanConnect will get navigation with mobile apps and Services, which allows you to operate some vehicle functions, such as activating the alarm, from your smartphone and can track the car if it's stolen.
The more powerful, more comfortable GT-R will go on sale this summer. The base car, if you can call it that, will be the GT-R Premium shown here. It'll eventually be joined by three more trim levels with increased performance. The 2017 GT-R will likely cost at least as much as the current car, which starts just over $102,000.

SUV Review: 2021 GMC Terrain SLE Missing features and a bland interior are solid hints that GMC's compact crossover is due for its 2022 refresh

With big wheels, turbocharged performance, swoopy style, fancy materials and eye-popping paint finishes, the world of compact crossovers have evolved into a diverse landscape. Almost every automaker has built their crossover into something interesting or unique, but this GMC Terrain is the result of some slow progress, and it shows.
Bland, anonymous and almost entirely forgettable, GMC is even being thoroughly upstaged by the efforts of smaller automakers like Mitsubishi and Mazda. Pandemic-related delays have resulted in the model not getting refreshed, and as a result, it is hard to imagine this crossover being competitive in one of the most important segments on the market.
While it sounds like the Terrain is in a tough spot, there is some redemption found under the hood. Smooth and punchy rather than high-performing and exciting, the turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine used in our SLE test model was a pleasant reminder of what General Motors is capable of. Paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission and a driver controller all-wheel-drive system, I was pleased with how the vehicle slipped into the right gear under heavy throttle and didn’t feel sluggish or limited. That’s despite the relatively mundane output from the engine, which is rated to deliver 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. All previously optional engines are no longer available, meaning no high-output 2.0-litre turbo, or turbodiesel.
Fuel economy was also kept in check, easily meeting or improving upon the 9.0 L/100 km the vehicle is expected to return based on the Natural Resources Canada testing. Likely this experience is a result of the selectable all-wheel-drive system, which can be kept in a 2WD mode in dry and clear conditions for reduced fuel usage. When the driver isn’t feeling as confident in the capability of the Terrain, they can turn a dial on the centre console to quickly put the vehicle into an all-wheel-drive mode, allowing them to tackle the route ahead.
Beyond the powertrain, the GMC Terrain feels cumbersome on the road. The steering is light and limp, though the suspension and ride are decent. It’s soft and ideal for commuting duties. However, the vehicle has a larger turning circle compared to other compacts, making it feel far more complicated to park than it should be.
Our SLE trimmed test model felt spartan at times. While the infotainment system featured Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, the seven-inch touchscreen seemed minuscule. There was no wireless phone charger, and though the entertainment features include 4G capability and a WiFi hotspot, the vehicle felt thoroughly low-tech. Heated front seats are included at this level, but not in the rear, and there was no heated steering wheel. That’s a tough break considering some vehicles in this class are offering ventilated seats in some configurations. At this trim level, the Terrain doesn’t even feature a power liftgate.
Behind the rear seats, the GMC offers a hefty 838 litres of storage space, which expands to 1,792 when you fold those rear seats down. That task can be accomplished with some handy levers in the cargo area. Unfortunately, with folded seats, the storage floor isn’t completely flat. Rear seat passengers are granted an average experience in terms of space but the seats aren’t very comfortable. One detail I liked about the GMC is that it has a lot of storage cubbies throughout the cabin, which is nice for those that treat their vehicle as a mobile storage locker.
Surprisingly, the GMC includes just a few safety features and driver aids, which should appeal to the shoppers that loathe these kinds of nannies. There was no blind-spot monitoring, or adaptive cruise control system here, just a forward-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking, and a lane-keeping assistance system. These features are available only on optional packages, which is noticeable since other vehicles like say a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic offers features like that as standard equipment. The lighting was excellent at night, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes that it creates excessive glare. This concern among the limited safety features explains why the vehicle doesn’t have a Top Safety Pick rating, though the crash test scores are strong.
While I was disappointed with the lack of features in the Terrain, it was the GMC’s styling that left a lingering aftertaste that I couldn’t shake. It’s boring, lacking an identity of its own. The blacked-out rear pillars look awkward, and the C-shaped daytime running lights are bland, without the striking and instantly identifiable character that many other vehicles possess. The blacked-out elements like the wheels, roof rails, mirror caps, and badging that are part of our Elevation Edition package, don’t help at all.
Inside, things are somehow less interesting. The cloth seats aren’t very impressive, though they are textured and provide a decent amount of support. There’s drab orange stitching found around the seats, but the rest of the cabin features a hard plastic material that feels awful, like an old Rubbermaid container, or the finishing texture on a cooler. Knobs and controls feel equally low-rent, and my passenger kept complaining about the fore-aft seat sliding lever that sticks out uncomfortably from under the seat and into their leg.
If you’re thinking there’s a redeeming factor to the Terrain with its price point, the vehicle will once again disappoint. A front-wheel-drive version of the GMC SLE is offered for $31,398 while the all-wheel-drive version tested starts at $33,798. This is more than a Subaru Forester or Mazda CX-5, which both come standard with AWD and feature more equipment at that base level. The next step up is the SLT model which costs $36,598 and the range-topping Denali model which is $40,798. Delivery fees are an extra $1,900 on top of that.
A refreshed version of the vehicle is expected to arrive this summer, and even that doesn’t feel urgent enough. The 2022 model is promising to rectify many of these complaints, with front-end redesign, an improved interior and tech features, and a rugged, off-road-ready AT4 model. We recommend waiting for that new model and its upgrades, as the Terrain in 2021 guise seems outmatched by its rivals in every way.

BMW iX Says “OK, Boomer” to Legendary 7 Series Flagship

Text
It's not often you get to see an automaker insult its own products but now's your chance. BMW has put together a video introducing the latest version of the brand's iDrive multimedia interface that premieres at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, and in it, two BMW models come to life—and turn out to be royal jerks.
The video shows the confrontation between two anthropomorphized BMWs: a classic E66 760Li and the new 2022 iX electric SUV that is about to replace it on BMW's corporate display stand. When the humans leave, the cars come alive. The 7 Series starts itself up and goes bumper-to-bumper with the iX.
"""Hey, whippersnapper!"" the big sedan calls out in a gravelly old-man voice."
"""Hey, Grandpa!"" replies the apparently-millennial iX."
"The cars begin to trade insults, with the iX telling the 760Li ""Your time is over"" and ""It's impossible to talk to your generation."" The 760Li calls the iX ""a toy car"" and invites it to ""Electric-drive yourself to hell, Tamagotchi!"" When the argument turns to the merits of their respective iDrive systems, the 760Li dismisses the iX's new one—y'know, the one the video is supposed to be promoting—as ""Bullshit. Marketing bullshit."""
More barbs are traded, there's a short chase followed by a reconciliation, and we are left staring at our screen wondering what the eff we just watched. The 7 Series, supposedly one of BMW's greatest cars, is portrayed as a hey-you-kids-get-off-my-lawn dotard straight out of Central Casting, while the iX is a spoiled brat with little respect for politeness or civil discourse, let alone its elders.
Maybe the stereotype of BMW drivers being douchebags is wrong—in this video, it's the BMWs themselves that are the douchebags. Proof positive that for all their accomplishments, the Germans have yet to develop a working sense of humor.

Land Rover to New Bronco: Welcome to the Party

Text
It's a good time for the cool kids. Land Rover has just started selling the 2021 Land Rover Defender 90, the short-wheelbase, two-door version of the classic SUV that we named the 2021 MotorTrend SUV of the Year. Anticipation continues to build for the revived-for-2021 Ford Bronco. And Jeep has expanded the original off-road icon Wrangler with performance and plug-in hybrid variants. It's a heritage SUV reunion in the making.
So we asked Joe Eberhardt, president and CEO of Land Rover North America, what impact the return of the Bronco will have on the new Defender 90. The longer Defender 110 was reintroduced to North America in June 2020 after a 23-year hiatus. The smaller Defender 90 was supposed to follow last fall with 500 units of the 2020 First Edition but when the pandemic impacted production, it was delayed to February and pushed into the 2021 model year.
The Bronco has seen repeated delays, as well, due to supply issues related to the pandemic. The spring launch was delayed to late summer but models with the Sasquatch package, manual transmission, and some hardtop roof options are being pushed into the 2022 model year.
Meanwhile, Jeep is keeping the Wrangler hot and front of mind with the addition of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 that stuffs the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 under the hood (thus floating somewhat into the path of the upcoming Defender V-8). To appease the environmental gods, there is also the new 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid.
"Strictly speaking, there is no clearly defined competitive set and audience for the Defender 90, Joe Eberhardt, president and CEO of Land Rover North America, says. But the Bronco is having a positive impact on the segment in general. ""There are a lot of vehicles now with a rich heritage,"" he says, referring to the Jeep Wrangler being joined by the Bronco and the Defender. The well-executed Bronco is drawing further attention to the segment, building engagement, and resonating with buyers."
Eberhardt calls it a reaffirmation of these types of vehicles. And after a year of restrictions due to the pandemic, these vehicles appeal to people who crave getting out again. These people seem to want to gravitate to authentic brands.
Land Rover is promoting the Defender lineup as a whole. Eberhardt does not have a projection of how many Defender 90s he expects to sell in the U.S or what percentage of the total Defender mix the smaller SUV will account for.
It is a serious off-roader with its 17-inch-shorter wheelbase and overall length than the Defender 110, but the dimensions also make it an attractive urban vehicle, easy to get around town and park. For some it could be a second car or sports car replacement, Eberhardt says. It is offered with five or six seats, but few are expected to forego the center console for an optional jump seat to squeeze a third person up front.
Complicating the rollout is a global shortage of Defenders. The order book exceeds 20,000, JLR officials said this month while releasing quarterly earnings. JLR reported more than 45,000 Defender sales in the past fiscal year that ended March 31. In the U.S., Defender sales have exceeded 16,000 since the June 2020 launch.

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Is the Same Old SUV as Before

Text
Before today, we weren't exactly sure if the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser was going to make it to 2021. Well, at least in the United States. Thankfully, Toyota is announcing some good news for fans of this age-old rock crawler. The Toyota Land Cruiser will live on for at least one more model year, and the Heritage Edition isn't going away, either.
The old-school body-on-frame SUV remains mostly unchanged, too. The only significant difference for 2021 is that the Heritage Edition now gets the option of a third row of seats and two new exterior colors: Classic Silver Metallic and Magnetic Gray Metallic join Midnight Black Metallic and Blizzard Pearl. All Heritage Edition cars come with a model-specific set of sweet-looking BBS-sourced 18-inch wheels.
The power plant for this mammoth SUV is the same 5.7-liter V-8 as before and it once again churns out 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. Likewise, the Land Cruiser's hydraulically controlled sway bars (known as Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System in Toyota-speak), hill-descent control, multi-terrain select, and the lockable Torsen center differential are still all here—without any changes—to take you wherever, whenever.
The Land Cruiser also comes with lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and blind-spot monitoring (among a few other goodies). Unfortunately, the Land Cruiser still lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, but it does sport a 14-speaker JBL sound system and a wireless charging pad for your smartphone.
Prices for the Land Cruiser and the Heritage Edition go up by $100 for 2021. The standard Land Cruiser now rings in at $86,84o, while the Heritage Edition wears an $89,170 price tag. Expect to pay a little more to add a third-row to the latter trim.

Diagnostic Fault Information

Typical Scan Tool Data

Circuit/System Description

The shift control solenoid (SLB1) is installed on the front valve body. The solenoid linearly controls hydraulic pressure in response to signals

output from the transmission control module TCM. Through this, the SLB1 controls operating hydraulic pressure to the brake for smooth shifting.

According to each shift control solenoid assembly, the transmission shifts from 1st gear into 6th gear and vice versa. As a fail-safe function, if any

shift control solenoid assembly abnormality occurs, the TCM will disable the current to the solenoids.

GMC Hummer's Screens Are More Cinematic Thanks to Perception Studio

Text
"GMC's 2024 Hummer EV SUV was fully revealed today, and among the descriptions of its features, the automaker noted that it ""offers new tactical tech""—logical for a vehicle descended from the mil-spec original Hummer.  ""Tactical"" shows itself in the set of displays and controls in the gauge cluster, infotainment, and HVAC screens, and for those, GMC tapped a New York visual-effects studio called Perception to create the Hummer's digital personality. "
"Perception's background includes work in the Marvel universe and on the 2014 film Robocop. Where did Tony Stark get his glass phone, and where did Hydra's Armin Zola get his ghost stuck in an ancient CRT machine? Perception. The company also works with tech firms including Microsoft and Samsung, aerospace companies, and automakers. In addition to making practical improvements, creative director John LePore told us, Perception works to give interfaces and digital experiences ""cinematic magic"" that will ""live up to dreams and fantasies created by science fiction."" "
"LePore said Perception started working with GM about two and a half years ago and has spent 18 months on the Hummer project to combine technology and cinema in representing all of the new EV's capabilities. The intent was to make the HMI ""the most forward-thinking experience that it could be."" GMC and Perception explored ""dozens and dozens of concepts"" to get the final version seen in Hummer reveal videos.  "
"Perception needed to represent the range of Hummer features with sci-fi flourishes but without filling the cabin screens with numbers and prompts. LePore described the studio's approach as ""Every pixel has a purpose."" Such discipline ""results in instrumentation that is bold and direct, while Perception's cinematic skill set results in a look that is spartan and tactical,"" befitting a Hummer's intended attitude. The visualizations we've seen so far do look martial from a distance—they wouldn't be out of place in a Michael Bay film or a Bourne franchise installment."
There's a lot going on in the visualizations, but each has been designed to convey its information in several ways and at a glance. While Perception did the visuals for the gauge cluster, center screen, and HVAC screen, the marquee cinematic bits come through in the Hummer's Off-Road App ProView function. The truck offers more than 10 off-road widgets and can display up to three at once in the 13.4-inch touchscreen.
Take the pitch and roll graphic. It puts a Hummer icon at the center of a three-dimensional gyroscope, a red line representing roll, a blue line representing pitch. Colored bars at the edges of each axis get thicker or thinner to show how far the Hummer is from level, akin to the way a digital level works on a smartphone or a digital camera. Pitch and roll also display their data in numbers, two figures in blue being the current angles, two figures in red being the maximum safe angles. It's the kind of display that would take about 60 minutes on the trail to get proficient with, after which other displays could seem antiquated or arcane.
"Just about every feature we've been privy so far contains the same density of information, easy to pluck once one learns where to look for a particular stat. Torque application at each wheel is four bar graphs at the corners of a Hummer icon. Each graph fills with blue as a wheel requires more torque, the blue changing to orange when the wheel nears its maximum torque. Ride height adjusts in four steps, with four boxes beside a Hummer icon illuminating while ""a holographic pulse"" is emitted from the top of the icon as the Hummer progresses through the stages. The suspension travel widget displays vertical wheel movement in real time, and Perception ""added color-changing branches that magnify the movement of each wheel"" to make the widget easier to read quickly. "
Widgets are customizable as well. One widget contains a compass with three different representations of direction of travel, as well as GPS coordinates, altitude, and the drive mode. Switch to the standalone altimeter display and get two graphic illustrations of current elevation, plus high and low altitude values.
"LePore said even the HVAC screen contains gems. ""It may take weeks of ownership before noticed, but there are delightful micro-animations that respond to every HVAC button press … and enhance the understanding of each interaction."" And the customizable AUX buttons for accessories will include a library of visualizations like lights and a skull & crossbones."
"Transition and technology screens earned just as much thought. When changing driving modes, LePore said ""the Hummer bursts through a portal, entering a new epic environment. Each mode has its own distinct animation displaying an accurate depiction of the mode's capabilities."" The ubiquitous lunar themes, both in the screen and in design elements around the vehicle, symbolize GM's historic work on NASA's lunar program."
For features like the Crabwalk, the driver presses a button for five seconds; the delay is to prevent accidental activation. While depressing the button, a progress bar appears on the center stack to confirm activation. Once the feature is active, an image in the center screen shows a Hummer icon with its wheels turned, and a Crabwalk graphic appears in the instrument cluster. LePore said.
"The Watts to Freedom mode calls up a series of instructional graphics in the instrument cluster as the Hummer guides the driver on the steps required to prep for a standing launch. LePore said the visuals are ""almost a mission control checklist or launch sequence."" In Hummer parlance on the instrument panel, it's called becoming ""armed."" "
All of this was of course done with federal regulations for ergonomics and distracted driving in mind. We'll need to drive the Hummer ourselves to assess whether Perception has landed on the pixel-thin road to the future's holy trifecta of novel, impressive, and useful.
"LePore's adamant there are no gimmicks involved. ""The vehicle's not wearing a sci-fi costume,"" he said. ""The goal is not to create something futuristic. The goal was to create what the future of these vehicles should be."" Stressing that rousing technology isn't holograms and flashing lights, Perception's believes ""the future is not an aesthetic, it's a logic-driven way of thinking and making sure that you're creating something that is the most effective to the human that we'll be using it."
"""We're just presenting the clearest graphs, the boldest numerical readouts and information that I think will begin to become the new standard moving forward."""

Why are Hyundai engines failing?

Why are Hyundai engines failing?
The U.S. safety agency opened its probe in 2017 after Hyundai recalled about 470,000 vehicles in September of 2015 because debris from manufacturing could restrict oil flow to connecting rod bearings. That could make the bearings wear out and fail, potentially causing the four-cylinder engines to stall or catch fire.
