The rear-wheel drive Sprinter Van 3500 comes in two wheelbases, two roof heights and three body lengths for class-leading versatility. Two new trim levels are available, with the 1500 and 4500 joining the 2500, 3500 and 3500XD. The 1500 level trim is available only with the gas engine, single tires and 144-in. wheelbase, while the 4500 is only available with the diesel engine and dual rear-wheel drive (RWD). The vehicles had been recalled earlier and were getting temporary replacements while Mazda developed the permanent fix. Under the older recall, the vehicles were being given a stopgap fix with new inflators containing the same non-desiccated ammonium-nitrate propellant as the originals that might have degraded. You need to be careful about who services your sprinter, and you yourself should know how to test and fix a bad wire. Old battery was showing 85% charged and car was starting just fine, but when Adblue pump test was running it was not enough to complete this test. On the test drive the car was in limp home mode with the dash light illuminated.
The repair for your particular car may involve replacing the entire airbag assembly or just the inflator. UPDATE 11/13/2014, 11:10 a.m.: Takata has released a more formal statement saying that the allegations made in last week鈥檚 New York Times article 鈥渁re fundamentally inaccurate鈥?and that it 鈥渦nfairly impugned the integrity of Takata and its employees.鈥?The company says (in this PDF) that there were no tests of 鈥渟crapyard airbag inflators鈥?in 2004, that after-hours tests in 2004 鈥渨ere not 鈥榮ecret tests鈥?. The latest instance occurred when a 2004 Civic crashed on July 10 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and its airbag exploded. UPDATE 6/4/2015, 3:00 p.m.: Takata has informed Reuters that at least 10 percent of the 4 million replacement airbag inflators installed as part of these recalls will have to be replaced again. Automakers will determine the specific cars affected by Takata鈥檚 recalls and notify owners with their own recall.
VOLKSWAGEN: Certain 2004-2008 Audi A4 and 2005-2011 Audi A6 cars. In addition to forcing Ford to pay for an outreach program to contact owners who have not repaired their vehicles, the settlement means that affected owners will be eligible for rental cars or loaners and will have their repairs warrantied for up to two years or 75,000 miles. The study, which we outlined in February, is scheduled to end in August 2017. GM maintains that the delayed recall won鈥檛 endanger vehicle occupants, saying the inflators will 鈥渓ikely perform as designed until at least December 31, 2019.鈥?Of the 44,000 passenger-side inflators that have deployed in consumer use and the 1055 that have been deployed in testing, none have ruptured, GM says. The replacements under the new recall use a different propellant. The conclusions, according to Automotive News, are that 鈥渋t was the combination of these three factors-the use of ammonium nitrate, the construction of Takata鈥檚 inflator assembly, and the exposure to heat and humidity-that made the inflators vulnerable to rupture.鈥?These results are consistent with Takata鈥檚 internal testing as well as testing by the Fraunhofer Group. This group, using a desiccant now not used, previously were thought to be safe, but Takata testing determined they could be dangerous.
According to Automotive News Canada, roughly 5.2 million Takata airbags have so far been recalled in Canada. Both the driver- and passenger-side airbags ruptured in this particular crash. Updated 7/21/2017: Nissan is the first automaker to announce specific safety recalls related to Takata鈥檚 recent recall of 2.7 million older-generation airbag inflators with a particular desiccant, or drying agent, intended to protect the propellant from heat and humidity degradation. Updated 7/25/2017: Mazda issues a new safety recall to put permanent replacement airbag inflators in about 205,000 affected vehicles recalled in May 2016 to get temporary repairs. Updated 7/21/2017: Nissan follows the Takata action by recalling about 515,000 Versa sedans and hatchbacks with driver-side airbag inflators containing the desiccated ammonium-nitrate propellant Takata now says also may be risky. Which airbag inflators in those cars are under recall? UPDATE 7/9/2015, 9:35 a.m.: Honda has recalled another 4.5 million vehicles, bringing the total number of its cars and SUVs involved in Takata-airbag-related actions to 24.5 million.
