Ford Reveals Its New Electric Mustang Mach-E

Ford Reveals Its New Electric Mustang Mach-E

Ford has used its legendary Mustang name on another car for the first time - and it鈥檚 an all-electric family SUV. Ford revealed the five-seater Mach-E at the Los Angeles Motor Show, with first UK deliveries tipped for the end of next year. While purists may consider a five-seater four-door SUV to be a long way from the classic Mustang philosophy, it will be quick. Would you buy an electric car? The fastest GT version - due in 2021 - aims to have blistering acceleration, going from rest to 62mph in under 5 seconds. That compares to the current Mustang GT in Bullitt special edition form, which costs 拢47,545 and has a petrol-powered 5.0 litre V8, packing 454bhp, which gets it from 0 to 62mph in 4.6 seconds. The V8 Mustang manages just 22.8mpg and has CO2 emissions of 277g/km, meaning that the Mach-E will be lighter on the wallet and friendlier for the planet, although drivers will have to do without the dramatic engine soundtrack.

The Mach-E will be offered with standard or extended range, and as rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, and those who want to get their hands on a special fully-stocked First Edition will have to part with at least 拢58,000. He said: 鈥橫ost people don鈥檛 know this but I worked at Ford as a young guy. My father also worked at Ford, so it鈥檚 practically in my blood. There are three engagingly-named drive modes from the quiet pony car: Whisper, Engage and the sportiest Unbridled. Ford claims it will bring the Mustang鈥檚 thrilling spirit of 鈥榝reedom, progress, fast performance and a touch of rebellion鈥?into the electric age. It said the Mustang Mach-E aims to combine 鈥榮pirited ride and handling鈥?with state-of-the-art connected vehicle technology. The extended range version (with a 99kWh battery) in rear-wheel drive option develops 285 horsepower (PS) and has the maximum pure-electric driving range of more than 370 miles, but can still accelerate from rest to 62mph in under 8 seconds.

The standard range version (with 75kWh battery packs) in rear-wheel drive and 258 horsepower has a range of 280 miles. Ford says that the battery, secured inside a water-proof battery case and surrounded by crash absorption protection, is located on the floor between the vehicle鈥檚 two axles. It uses an advanced active liquid heating and cooling system to regulate temperatures for optimised performance in extreme weather - including as low as minus 40C - to improve charging times. Charging times often deter potential customers. But using high power 150kWh DC fast-charging stations, Ford calculates drivers will be able to deliver up to 80 per cent charge in 38 minutes, or up to 58 miles (93km) driving range in 10 minutes. Charging at home with a special 11KW wallbox will add about 32 miles of range per hour. With no engine to worry about, under its bonnet it has a drainable 100 litre 鈥榝ront trunk鈥?big enough for a carry-on luggage bag. The drainable aspect makes it ideal for storing wet or muddy sports clothing, hiking boots or beach gear, according to Ford.

Both engines teamed with five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic, but the latter was Ford's latest "AOD-E" unit with electronic shift control. Prices for '94 Mustang models jumped significantly, but critics claimed the cars weren't all that changed from previous years. Keep reading to get the specifics on 1994 Mustang pricing. Overall, the redesigned 1994 Ford Mustang represented the kind of thorough modernization that Ford had already lavished on its family sedans. Still, some critics huffed that after such a long wait, this "all-new" Mustang wasn't really all new. Ford defended the car on two grounds. First, it pointed to all those new and modified parts. Second, as project overseer Will Boddie pointed out, a ground-up redesign would have forced Ford to raise prices. Fair enough, but some buyers must have suffered sticker shock anyway. 2500 higher than its four-cylinder predecessor. 13,365, though the extra money admittedly bought a larger engine, much better brakes, and the dual airbags, plus a tilt steering wheel and four-way power driver's seat that had cost extra before.

15,850 for its '93 counterpart, but it boasted all the same upgrades, plus bigger wheels and tires and expected standards like front foglights, rear spoiler, sport seats, and leather-rim steering wheel. All '94 models had a "twin-cowl" dashboard with full gauges and dual airbags. For the first time since 1973, ragtops were built entirely in-house, right alongside coupes. A power top with glass rear window remained standard, joined by a rear-window defogger. Recalling the 1963 Mustang II show car was an announced Corvette-style liftoff hardtop. Though too bulky for one person, it weighed a manageable 80 pounds and had the same look as the coupe's fixed steel roof. It was a nice idea, but production glitches delayed availability to model-year '95, by which time buyers had apparently lost interest, and the option was canceled after only 499 installations. Lack of horsepower and of any real innovation in the model year were some of the complaints auto experts had for the '94 Mustang lineup. Keep reading to see what the reviewers had to say.
