Complaint:
The following messages appear alternately in the instrument cluster:
- "Unavailable! - ESP - See operator's manual!"
- "Unavailable! - ABS - See operator's manual!"
- "Tire pressure monitor unavailable"
Note:
In the ESP control unit ((N30-4) (ESP-CU)) the codes:
- 5102 and/or
- 5112 and/or
- 5122 and/or
- 5132 and/or
- 7271 and/or
- 7270
may be stored.
Cause:
The above codes are logged during the start-off monitoring of the wheel rpm sensors (DZS).
This monitoring is active even when ESP is OFF.
Under gentle acceleration via the accelerator pedal in ESP OFF mode, one of the driven wheels may start to spin slowly due to slip (e.g. on ice or if
contact with the ground is lost). If this wheel reaches a speed in excess of 15 km/h and the speed of all other wheels is less than 6 km/h, the ESP
control unit logs an appropriate code for these rpm sensors. If the acceleration command is increased (in an attempt to gain grip), the relevant code
(51x2) is logged after 180 seconds.
In the next ignition sequence when the vehicle speed exceeds 10 km/h the ESP control unit checks whether the display in the instrument cluster is
still relevant. If there are no other codes logged for the rpm sensor, the ABS and ESP systems are available again.
Note:
In ESP ON mode the overspinning wheel is braked when it reaches a speed of 15 km/h.
Remedy:
Erase codes.
It is not necessary to replace any parts.
