It's what you get for donating $250,000.
Donald Trump is not exactly what you'd call a conventional president. Like POTUS, some of those he’s nominated for various important jobs don’t come from a political background, but rather, a business one. And his latest pick continues that trend. According to Automotive News, Trump has nominated David Fischer to be the next US ambassador to Morocco. Fischer’s family has been in the car business for a long time, and he began running it in 1978, growing it into the 15th largest in the US.
Based in Troy, Michigan, The Suburban Collection dealership group reported $2.4 billion in revenue last year. As for Fischer himself, he previously donated $250,000 to Trump’s inaugural committee and has no prior government or public service experience. Fischer is also a major philanthropist. Over the years, his Detroit area dealerships have donated to about 80 different charities, including the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society. Fischer also helped lead fundraising efforts for a downtown Detroit building renovation project and donated millions to other organizations.
So what’s his relationship, past or present, to Morocco? None. In fact, the small African nation represents only a very small portion of US trade. However, Morocco is a mineral source for the US, specifically salt and sulfur. Assuming Fischer gets through the nomination process, he’ll be in charge of maintaining the country’s relationship and bilateral free trade agreement. Heck, maybe some Moroccans may even get some car buying advice.
