Although the Mazda 3, Ford Focus and Volvo S40 were all developed by Mazda and used Mazda based engines, Mazda wasn't allowed to use turbo version of their own engine or make their interiors very high quality lest it compete with Volvo. Now ouside of Ford control, they are making their cars more premium.
