This is the Black Bess, the fifth and penultimate special edition Bugatti Veyron based on the Grand Sport Vitesse. Once again, the luxury French brand has chosen to celebrate a notable name from its past, reviving the 1913 Type 18 鈥淏lack Bess鈥?originally owned by French aviation pioneer Roland Garros. The carbon-fibre body has been painted entirely in black with gold detailing, an echo of its historical namesake鈥檚 styling. This is the Volkswagen New Midsize Coupe concept, unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show. Designed by Volkswagen鈥檚 lead designer Klaus Bischoff and his team, the four-door coupe appears to take several design cues from the current VW Golf, suggesting it could preview a production CC model based on the hatchback. VW claims the 1,422mm high New Midsize Coupe 鈥渆xhibits proportions of an extremely sporty nature鈥?and, at 1838mm wide and 4,597mm long, it鈥檚 both shorter and wider than the Passat and Jetta. If a Chinese debut for the new Huracan wasn鈥檛 enough, Lamborghini is also planning on showing off an Aventador Nazionale at Beijing. According to a statement from the Italian manufacturer, the special edition is a 鈥渉ighly exclusive and appealing configuration鈥?created by Ad Personam, Lamborghini鈥檚 personalisation programme that allows customers to design their own made-to-order supercar. Shortly after it unveiled the updated Countryman in New York, the facelifted MINI Paceman has been revealed in Beijing. Updates are minimal, with MINI鈥檚 primary focus to improve efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. Exterior changes amount to a black surround on the headlights and rear lamp cluster, but buyers can opt for a chrome finish as a no-cost option.
Running costs may not be high on your list of priorities if you鈥檙e considering a Porsche as your next car, and the majority of the Macan range will see you visiting the filling the station fairly regularly. If you do have an eye on moderately manageable fuel costs, you鈥檒l want to look at a used example of the Macan S Diesel. Porsche claims it鈥檒l return 44.8 and 46.3mpg (depending on the size of the wheels), which isn鈥檛 too bad at all considering it鈥檚 an engine with strong performance. Next up for running costs is the least powerful petrol - the 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit. Capable of returning between 38.2 and 39.2mpg, it鈥檚 not far behind the diesel, but will likely need working a little harder, so expect to see figures lower than the claimed ones in everyday conditions. It won鈥檛 surprise anyone that the high-performance Macan Turbo and Turbo with Performance Package have the lowest claimed fuel economy figures. It comes as no surprise that the Macan鈥檚 CO2 emissions are comparatively high across the range compared with some of its SUV rivals - and that鈥檚 due to the high-performance nature of a lot of the powertrains.
Lowest of all was the 3.0-litre V6 diesel, producing between 159 and 164g/km. As with fuel economy, the CO2 produced by each version of Macan depends on the size of the wheels. Next up is the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol with CO2 emissions of 167-172g/km. Unsurprisingly; it鈥檚 the cleanest of the petrols. The Macan Turbo isn鈥檛 far behind, emitting 211-216g/km, while specifying the Turbo with Performance Package sees the figures climb. Porsche is known for building cars that go on for years with no problems, and many of the engine and drivetrain components have been tried and tested in other applications before finding their way into the Macan. That鈥檚 not to say it鈥檚 perfect, though. There have been three recalls issued for the Macan, all of which were early in its life cycle and will have been sorted out by Porsche. Since then, it seems to have been plain sailing, so owning a Macan shouldn鈥檛 be much of a headache.
