According to the latest sources, the next-generation Boxster, also known as the 981, is being conceived almost entirely from scratch. Weight comes down too, by 15 kg (33 lbs) to 1320 kg (2904 lbs) for the standard model while the Boxster S will tip the scales at 1340 kg (2948 lbs). The Boxster will also feature some unique styling cues on its front and rear fascias, its own headlamps and taillights, a new side air intake design and a steeper windscreen. But the real distinct factor will be a new flat-four power plant that Porsche is developing that will be a flagship engine of the next Boxster and Cayman models. The four-cylinder unit will displace 2.5 liters and feature a larger bore than on the current 2.7 liter engine. The 2.5 liter will be twin-turbocharged up to around the 360 bhp (268 kW / 365 PS) and 347 lb-ft (470 Nm) of torque mark. The 2.7 liter engine stays, with a bump in power from 241 hp (180 kW / 245 PS) to 265 bhp (198 kW / 269 PS) and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) of torque. The 3.4 liter for the Boxster S will deliver 315 bhp (235 kW / 319 PS) and 360 Nm (266 lb-ft) of torque compared to the current 291 hp (217 kW / 295 PS).
Unfortunately, to really appreciate them, you have to hike in from the highway for about two hours, which prevented us from getting up close. The roads in Newfoundland are like roads anywhere 鈥?some great, some not-so-great. The ones that were bumpy seemed like a challenge to the Macan and the suspension passed with flying colours. Yes, you knew you had gone over a bump, but the shock was minimal. The only car I can compare that to was a Ford Crown Victoria I rented a dozen years ago, or so, for a driving trip through Nova Scotia, and it delivered a really smooth ride, just like the Porsche. Mash the throttle and you can feel the power of that V6. We didn鈥檛 have a stop watch (former Wheels contributor Costa Mouzouris was my co-driver) but we went from zero to 100 km/h quickly (it reportedly takes 5.1 seconds to do that). We went zipping along some winding coastal roads and the car felt glued to the highway, as if it had the downforce you would experience in a formula racing car.
The steering was sharp 鈥?precise might be a better word. Before we embarked on our daylong journey, we were told to keep an eye out for moose, of which there are a lot in Newfoundland. The highway signs showing a crumpled car and a moose are not for amusement. That really is what can happen if you crash into one. But, alas, we did not see one of those majestic creatures on the day we were there. I feel like I missed out on something. I asked my old pharmacist the other day what she liked about her Porsche. I almost couldn鈥檛 get her to stop talking. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a pleasure to drive,鈥?she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 easy to handle, the response is terrific and it鈥檚 got fast pickup. It鈥檚 comfortable and turns corners well. I like that it feels like a sports car, but I have a family and it鈥檚 functional. You know, I couldn鈥檛 have said it better myself.
660 000 USD Enzo. With regards to pure performance, the Enzo does have 48 more horsepower (35.8 kW), and weighs 33 lbs (15 kgs) less which would make it win on any straight. The Carrera GT on the other hand, offers much more down force and might possibly catch up in the turns. In any case, if either car is superior, the margin is so narrow that it鈥檚 more a question of driver skill. Despite announcing a total production of 1500 units, only 1270 came from the factory in Saxony. Porsche stopped after airbag regulations changed in the US. It is also important to mention that the Carrera GT wasn鈥檛 meant to become the fastest road legal supercar. Had Porsche tried to chase the McLaren鈥檚 performance figures, production (planned at 1500 cars), profitability and comfort would have suffered. Most cars came in the standard colors of Guards Red, Fayence Yellow, Basalt Black, GT Silver or Seal Grey, but custom colors were available. Davis, Matt. 鈥楶orsche Carrera GT鈥? Harris, Chris. 鈥楾he Dazzling Carrera鈥? Kacher, Georg. 鈥楾he Porsche We鈥檝e All Been Waiting For鈥? Meaden, Richard. 鈥楽uper Ferry Animal鈥? Simister, John. 鈥楪unning for Enzo鈥? Stout, Pete. 鈥楶orsche鈥檚 Pinnacle鈥?
Only when braking for a very short time like in front of fast corners I use my left foot. By the way, compared to a 鈥榥ormal鈥?race car, conditions in the cockpit of the R15 plus are unusually quiet which is very pleasant for us drivers. The V10 TDI engine is a bit noisier and harsher than the V12 TDI from the R10. From a certain speed onward, you couldn鈥檛 even hear the V12 TDI anymore at all, just the wind noise. You perceive the engine of the R15 plus in all rpm ranges. But when you lift in a long bend, you can actually hear the squealing of the tires - and that鈥檚 definitely unusual in a race car. I鈥檇 really like to take you out on a lap in the R15 plus but there鈥檚 simply not enough room on the passenger鈥檚 side. But, from now on, when you see the pictures from our onboard cameras at Le Mans, you may have a better idea of the things that go on in our cockpit day and night.
