That Time Ford Built A Mid-engined Mustang

That Time Ford Built A Mid-engined Mustang

Despite the original Mustang being a major hit from its launch in mid-1964, that didn鈥檛 stop Ford from thinking about future variants of the car. Designed by Gene Bordinat and built by the Ford Special Vehicles Group and Kar Kraft, the Mach 2 Concept was their attempt at a mid-engine version of the Mustang. The prototype, first shown at the 1967 Chicago Auto Show was thought to be a potential replacement for the Shelby Cobra. Bearing more resemblance to a Corvette from the side than a Mustang, it had a 289 V8 which was mounted behind a two-seat passenger compartment - a complete break from the Mustang鈥檚 front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. Despite its layout, the car still managed to have a long hood and short tail end with distinctive Mustang styling. Since the car never made it beyond the auto show circuit, we have no idea it might have handled in comparison to the nose-heavy, tail-waggy Mustangs we all know and love. Bonus image for making it this far down the page鈥?Apparently, they crammed a full-size spare tire into the Mach 2鈥檚 engine compartment. We鈥檙e guessing that kept the tire warm and sticky for some extra grip.

Although we spent most of our time behind the wheel staring at the rumbling hood scoop, we did manage to take in some of the Mach 1's throwback styling cues. The black leather "comfortweave" seats look like respectable reproductions of the original trim (albeit with considerably more lateral support), while the retro gauges make for a clean-looking instrument cluster. An optional interior trim package includes gray accents for the instrument panel, center stack and shift bezel in addition to aluminum pedals and an aluminum shift ball and boot ring. With only 6,500 Mach 1s scheduled for production, they're likely to fly off the lots as fast as they tear down the drag strip. While the modern version isn't exactly the street king that the original version was, it still has more than enough guts under the hood to rattle a few nerves and put a smile on your face. But then again, like so many other recreations of late-'60s legends, the new Mach is missing that aura of originality that can't be added like an options package. Here鈥檚 an honest and approachable project that you can fix up and drive to a car show in short order. This 1969 Ford Mustang in College Park, Maryland is a real Mach 1 with Marti report. It came well-equipped and runs as-is, though some work will be needed before it鈥檚 road-worthy. The listing here on eBay features many pictures, a lengthy description, and a link to a video of the car running. Tip your hat to the seller; after you process the the stream-of-consciousness style listing, you realize it includes a wealth of information to answer many questions. Though the original M code 351 Cleveland Windsor is gone, this 1970 351 C runs and sounds 鈥渟weet,鈥?and the seller graciously lists items that need attention before throwing your family in for a cruise. Repairing a massive power steering leak would be high on the list. Weak points include a number of rusty spots, but the rear bumper looks straight as an arrow. The factory wing and louvers are long gone. The white color is true to factory, and the car originally featured a black hood. Original equipment included air conditioning, power disc brakes, and power steering. After sitting for at least ten years it鈥檚 ready for a second life. The Mach 1 interior came in red but was changed to black. The dash is likely cracked under this cover. The 351 C (upgraded with aftermarket intake and carb) with the 3.00 gears should make for sporty performance and decent highway RPM. The 鈥?9 is one of my favorite Mustangs, and I hope this one finds a good home and an owner who puts it back on the road this year. What would you give for this long-parked pony?

Less Than 100 Miles On The Dash Say So. If you鈥檙e looking for a sweet deal, look no further - no pun intended. This stunning 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Shelby GT500 is finished in candy apple red paint to leave jaws on the ground. This vehicle recently received a complete restoration and is sporting a rust-free, straight solid body and floors. It鈥檚 powered by a Ford 390 cubic-inch big-block engine mated to an AOD four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive producing 350 horsepower. The engine has been balanced and blueprinted, so you can rest assured that it runs and drives extremely well. For those who may be unfamiliar, balancing an engine helps it to run smoother with less vibration which consequently creates less havoc on the main bearings. This, in turn, helps the parts last longer. Blueprinting means that the engine was built following a set of specs to the 鈥淭鈥? This Mach 1 also features 9-inch rear ends with a 3:50 trac lock, which is a torque-sensing differential. Additional goodies Stainless headers and mufflers, an aluminum radiator with electric fans, power steering, power disc brakes, and a March Performance front runner system. This 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 features the unmistakable and legendary sequential taillights that are universally associated with the Mustang.
