Ford Takes On Tesla With Mustang Mach-E Electric SUV

Ford Takes On Tesla With Mustang Mach-E Electric SUV

It turns out that Ford has something even more radical than the 900-horsepower Lithium prototype planned for its Mustang lineup. For the first time in 55 years, the American pony car family is getting a new model dubbed the Mustang Mach-E鈥攁n all-electric crossover SUV. This may be unsettling news to loyal 'Stang disciples, but Ford is doing its best to sell the new model as a natural evolution of the muscle car. Numerous variants will be offered over the next two years. There will be three different apparatuses used to "refuel" the Mustang Mach-E. The on-board charger and at-home charging station both run off of a standard 240-volt outlet to deliver 22 and 32 miles of range per hour, respectively. On the road, one of the 12,500 FordPass Charging Network stations scattered across the U.S. Canada will be able to charge the batteries from 10 to 80 percent in 38 minutes. Inside, drivers will be able to select three different driving modes: Whisper, Engage and Unbridled. Each alters driving dynamics and offers "a distinct sensory experience." Features include custom-designed vehicle responsiveness such as sportier steering controls, ambient lighting, sounds tuned for an all-electric experience, and dynamic cluster animations that are tied to driving behavior. Debuting in the cockpit of the Mach-E will be the next generation of Ford's SYNC infotainment system, i.e. a 15.5-inch touchscreen that forgoes complex menus for a smartphone-like interface and learns user preferences. Like Tesla's software, SYNC will receive over-the-air updates.

Ford has registered a trademark with the European Union Property Rights Office (EUPRO) and United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the rights to the name - Mustang Mach-E. This new moniker could either be for the impending Mustang hybrid or the upcoming Mustang-based electric crossover. Earlier, it was expected that either of the two models would resurrect the iconic 鈥楳ach 1鈥?name. The Mustang Mach 1 was a performance-oriented variant introduced by Ford in August 1968 as a special package for the 1969 model. And so readopting the Mach 1 name for an electric crossover didn鈥檛 receive any favourable response and therefore Ford dropped the idea altogether. Accordingly, the 鈥楳ach E鈥?seemed to be the solution the Blue Oval came up with. The American carmaker announced its intention to introduce an all-electric Mustang-based crossover over a year ago. Apart from that, we also exclusively spotted a hybrid variant of the Mustang.

Later, coinciding with the reveal of the Tesla Model Y, Ford also dropped a teaser with a blue livered Mustang logo last month. The new teaser logo for the upcoming model is identical to the one seen last year in Ford鈥檚 commercial. We know now that the upcoming Mustang hybrid won鈥檛 have eight cylinders under the hood. However, any powertrain housed in it will get an electric motor (or more) powering the front wheels while the conventional gasoline engine will power the rear wheels. Appearance wise, the Mustang hybrid won鈥檛 be much different from the standard Mustang. It is certain that it might lose some of its aggressive bits like the diffusers and multiple exhaust pipes. And under the skin, the new age muscle car will have new eco-related gizmos to squeeze as many miles out of each drop of fuel. Meanwhile, the Mustang-based electric crossover will be another new high-riding vehicle in Ford鈥檚 growing SUV/crossover line-up. There are no official details in this regard yet and we鈥檒l have to wait a little longer for it.
