Born in Cornwall.
Loved Cornwall.
Lived for Cornwall.
Terry was incredibly passionate about gig rowing. He was committed not only to the sport but to the gigs themselves and the history of them.
He was selfless with his time as a cox, slightly scary but bloody brilliant. Always full of praise and encouragement for ‘his girls’. He also took immense pride in maintaining the Devoran gigs whilst in the club. This is not to say he didn’t take the odd risk with them, racing up the A30 towards London at 80 mph in an attempt to beat the Culdrose towers to as he put it ‘be in front for a change’ was not entirely sensible.
Terry was also passionate about ‘club spirit’ thinking it more important than results. The drinking, singing and general socialising skills of Devoran Gig Club were mostly developed by Terry and the club was the envy of many for its ability to always have fun.
He was a living legend. Always with a smile on his face, happiest whilst singing Cornish songs with a pint in his hand and he will never be forgotten.
Funeral to take place on Thursday 19th December, 14:30 at Truro Cathedral. Dress code, anything Cornish, Gig Colours or anything that reminds you of Terry. Afterwards at Truro Rugby Club for a pint, pasty and singing.
As described in Dan Williams book about Devoran Gig Club ‘Rowing with my wife’
Terry – barrel chested, teak hard, ex miner. Body shaped similar to a firkin of Doombar bitter and rumoured to contain a similar amount of the amber nectar. Bald of pate, generous nature with a smile the width of the Carrick Roads. On and off the water, a fighting spirit allied to steely determination. Dominates company with infectious laugh and back slapping physicality. Up for anything and expects the same of others! Long time captain and boatmaster. The spirit and soul of the club.
Below is an interview with Terry as part of the ‘Pulling Together The Past’ project that was recorded in August at Cadgwith,
an event that Terry loved.
