Ford Mustang Mach-E Vs. Tesla Model Y

Ford Mustang Mach-E Vs. Tesla Model Y

Shoppers soon will have multiple fully electric options in one of the new-vehicle market鈥檚 hottest segments鈥攖he compact crossover. The Tesla Model Y and Ford Mach-E are both fundamentally the same size as popular models like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 but go without tailpipes and fuel tanks and promise to pack in a lot more excitement. Both are due for first deliveries as soon as the middle of 2020, and we expect Ford鈥檚 first dedicated electric vehicle, the Mustang Mach-E, to reach the market very soon after that. Ford is calling the Mach-E an SUV, even though it鈥檚 part of the Mustang family. Tesla calls the Model Y a sport utility, although because it only makes electric vehicles it鈥檚 less concerned about those designations for meeting fleet mpg averages. Ford plans to designate two range and battery capacities of the Mach-E: standard range (SR) and extended range (ER). For the Model Y, Tesla is anticipating a 300-mile range for Long Range versions, plus the recovery of 168 miles of range in 15 minutes, via the Tesla Supercharger network. On V3 hardware, the Model Y will charge, like the Model 3, at up to 250 kw.

Ford says that the Mach-E will return a range of up to 300 miles, and a DC fast charge time that recovers 47 miles in 10 minutes, on a 150-kw CCS unit. Tesla hasn鈥檛 specified power and torque ratings for the Model Y lineup, but its 0-60 mph times range from 5.9 seconds for base Standard Range versions up to 4.8 seconds with Dual Motor AWD and 3.5 seconds for Performance versions. Power, torque, and acceleration claims will also vary by version for the Mach-E, with standard range models making 255 hp while extended range versions make 333 hp and 429 lb-ft. Variants of the Mach-E may vary in acceleration times from the mid-3-second range to the mid-5-second range. Pricing between the Model Y and Mach-E will be surprisingly close. 48,200 and the Performance model above that. 7,500 EV tax credit, whereas the credit will likely have expired completely for Tesla before Model Y deliveries start. The Tesla Model Y will closely parallel the Model 3 sedan for features. It has the same entry and control system that, as with the Model 3, requires no keys and is smartphone based, allowing you to simply walk away without worrying about shutting the vehicle down. The Tesla Model Y comes with a suite of 12 ultrasonic sensors and a 160-meter forward radar system鈥攑art of Tesla's Autopilot suite鈥攁nd buyers can opt for Full Self Driving, which adds features like the much-hyped Smart Summon.

Instead, owners will have to rely on auto repair service centers that will look more like IT shops than garages. Right now, this is an issue I have with my aging Chevy Volt. I live in Michigan, where the Volt was designed and built. I take it to one of the largest Chevy dealerships in the country for service, where there is only one technician certified to work on the vehicle. Repairs take much longer than I would like, and this issue will likely compound as more complex vehicles come to market. Vehicle techs will have to be retrained, and lower-cost third-party service centers will likely lag behind expensive dealerships. The Mustang Mach-E is an EV done right. Ford took lessons from Tesla, Chevy and others with its first mass-produced electric vehicles. The Mach-E naming is unconventional at first glance, yet a closer look reveals its logic. The interior is exciting and yet scalable, and the model is full of surprises that will delight and could frustrate owners. Eventually, the automotive landscape will be filled with similar models to the Mach-E: recycled branding, higher ride height and unique features around simple interiors. It鈥檚 been said that the move to electric will produce stale, lookalike vehicles. That鈥檚 likely the short-term result as carmakers look to capitalize on familiar shapes and brands to get consumers onboard. Once consumers are comfortable with electric, that鈥檚 when the real fun begins. Expect the next generation of the Mustang Mach-E to be something more worthy of the Mustang name.

To their credit, the crew completed the entire project in a little more than a year. A quick conversation with Wilson revealed valuable insights into the process that takes place at R.J. 鈥淭here has to be organization and research to verify what is correct,鈥?Wilson says. 鈥淵ou have to take the time to document and take pictures of what is correct for the car so you can assemble the car correctly. I take 300 to 400 pictures of the car as I鈥檓 taking it apart. The disassembly takes me and another guy about two weeks.
