Ford Mustang Mach-E Electric SUV Revealed

Ford Mustang Mach-E Electric SUV Revealed

Ford has revealed the Mustang Mach-E - the firm鈥檚 first bespoke electrically powered SUV - with styling and (its maker claims) performance inspired by the muscle car. The Tesla Model Y rival is the first production car to emerge from Ford鈥檚 Team Edison, a 70-strong Detroit group tasked with designing the firm鈥檚 next-generation EVs. At launch, the range-topping version will produce 337hp, with a full GT model making around 465hp due at a later date. The new electric car has taken the Mustang title as the first step in expanding the nameplate into a full model line; the Mach-E moniker is inspired by the first-gen Mustang鈥檚 Mach-1 variant. The styling strongly links the EV to the regular Mustang, reflected in features such as the badge and front and rear lights, as well as several lines along the bodywork. Murat Gueler, Ford鈥檚 European design chief said: 鈥淭he approach was to put this car in a unique spot: only Ford can do Mustang.

The car lacks conventional door handles, instead featuring buttons that pop open the doors and small holds protruding from the front doors. Owners can use their smartphones as keys, or use a keypad built into the B-pillar. The Mustang Mach-E sports a more radical interior. The dash is dominated by a Tesla-style vertically mounted 15.5-inch touchscreen with a rotary dial fixed onto it using special glue. Many of the car鈥檚 systems are controlled through the screen, which uses a new Sync 4 operating system that can accept over-the-air updates. There is also a 10.2-inch digital cluster for the driver, while the steering wheel retains a number of physical controls. The Mach-E sits on a new Ford EV platform called Global Electrified 2, or GE2 - an extensively reworked version of the C2 architecture used for the latest Focus. Gueler said designers also gave their input into setting the platform鈥檚 dimensions, both to set the wheelbase and to enable the extended bonnet, which was considered an iconic Mustang design feature.

The model will initially be launched with two battery pack sizes and three power outputs. The twin-motor, all-wheel-drive version is offered with either a 75kWh battery and 258hp or a 99kWh and 337hp; both versions provide 582Nm and a sub-7.0sec 0-100kph time, with estimated ranges of 419km and 540km, respectively. The car is 4,712mm long, 1,881mm wide and 1,597mm high, placing it between the Jaguar I-Pace and the Mercedes-Benz EQC. Claimed boot volume is 402 litres, and there鈥檚 also a 100-litre waterproof front luggage bay. Ford hasn鈥檛 given a full range of performance figures yet, but Team Edison鈥檚 Dorit Haas said it was 鈥渕eant to be like a sportscar.鈥?She added: 鈥淭his is a performance EV. The rear-wheel-drive models will sit on 18-inch wheels, with 19-inch wheels for all-wheel-drive versions. Twin-motor machines gain adaptive LED headlights and red brake calipers, while limited-edition First Edition models also get a panoramic roof. The Mustang Mach-E is being built in Mexico. In India, Ford has entered into a joint venture with Mahindra, which will see both companies co-develop seven new models for the Indian market, including three new utility vehicles from Ford. The first of these will be a new SUV based on the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 - whose platform will be co-developed by Mahindra, SsangYong and Ford. Also on the cards will be a Ford MPV based on the Marazzo.

After the primer and paint was applied, I gently sanded thru these layers to expose the chrome underneath. Another trick not for the faint of heart. It does pay off though! After that, I painted the blacked out trunk and rear window that was unique to the Boss 302 and used another shade of black for the Engine Bay. This is how she sat for 3.5 years. Now that I found a source for the Ginger Interior color, I got back to work. First was the Wheels/Tires. The tires are the weakest part of the kit. I replaced them with Replica & Miniatures of Maryland Goodyear Polyglass G70- 15 resin tires. I had to sand the interior of the tire to get the kit wheels to fit. Thanks again to the Proxxon power tool and sanding stone to make that job mush easier this time 'round. Just have to decide on Argent or black inserts and add the valve stems. Dome of the detail work already done.

Tamiya Semi-gloss black for the spoiler and louvers. Rear End is Poly-S Gold, Stainless Steel, Humbrol Gloss Black and Printer red. Exhaust is Metalizer Aluminum and Stainless Steel over Humbrol Gloss black and polished. Chassis is Primer Red (Automotive primer). Gas Tank is Metalizer Stainless Steel. Front suspension is Humbrol Gloss Black, Polly-S Metalizers (Various shades), and Gunze Tire Black. I need to add and correct some of the colors and details later. This is a good start though. Engine is Ford Engine Blue. Gunze Burnt Iron for the exhaust headers and Engine Bell, Metalizer Aluminum for the Valve Covers and Transmission, and Polly-S Gold for the Carb. I found a conversion to install the Shaker Hood scoop on the Boss. I made one long ago for another project, a '69 Boss 429. It was a lot of work and pretty dicey. The only Mustang kit that really didn't do well at contests. I got a few and, well, sigh.
