Opel Insignia Spy Shots Have Us Wondering About The Buick Regal

What will happen to the Regal now that Opel is owned by PSA?

Last year, French automaker PSA purchased Opel and Vauxhall from General Motors. The deal had a limited impact on the US market because Opel and Vauxhall don't sell cars here. However, there may be one small hiccup for GM because the current Buick Regal Sportback and Regal TourX are both based on the Opel Insignia.

While there has been some speculation on how the PSA acquisition may affect the Buick Regal, nothing has been announced officially by GM or PSA Group.

Obviously, when the brand that designed the Buick Regal is purchased by another automaker, it calls into question how Buick could possibly continue selling and updating it. We recently received spy shots of a facelifted Insignia Sports Tourer, which is essentially the same car as the Regal TourX but without the body cladding and raised ride height.

PSA Group likely wants to make a change from the GM-designed fascia with a new grille and headlights. Rumors also suggest that the Insignia could gain new infotainment and powertrains from PSA Group.

The big question now becomes will the Buick Regal receive any of these changes? Since PSA Group is overseeing the facelift, it stands to reason that the Regal may just be left in the dark. We reached out to Buick for a statement, and a product spokesperson simply said: "We don’t speculate on future products." Perhaps even Buick doesn't know the fate of the Regal at the moment. It seems like Buick is happy to leave us in the dark, which is a shame because the Regal is a car we like very much.
