Better to roll them up so as not to hear the sound of grad students whining (note that they all somehow had money for the bar). It鈥檚 too bad that diesels made such an inauspicious debut in the U.S. 1980s. Most of those powerplants were so egregiously bad that they managed to turn people away from diesel technology for several generations. Consequently, few people realize how refined modern diesels are. Perhaps the 3.0-liter BlueTec V-6 in this ML350 will change people鈥檚 minds. So, yes, this is a fine powerplant. But the thing I鈥檓 happiest to see in the new M-class? The redesigned column-mounted stalks, so that I鈥檓 no longer accidentally activating the cruise control system when all I want to do it use the blinker. I find myself comparing any SUV I drive with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and it couldn鈥檛 be any more appropriate than it is here since the ML鈥檚 underpinnings are a good portion of what makes the GC so great. In this case, the student has surpassed the teacher. Where the GC feels, dare I say, nimble and effortless to drive, the ML feels heavy and almost unwieldy. The interior ambiance is also a step down from the Jeep鈥檚, largely due to Mercedes-Benz鈥檚 slow, cumbersome, and unattractive infotainment interface. The diesel Bluetec engine does go a long way in making this car feel special, though, and it improves fuel economy tremendously. It鈥檚 definitely the flavor I鈥檇 choose if the ML were on my must-have list. Oh, and I second Amy鈥檚 praise of the redesigned column stalks. It may sound nitpicky, but the previous downward angled cruise control stalk really was a nuisance.
Braking: A slightly soft pedal, but good stopping power from the ML 350鈥檚 all-disc braking hardware. Safety features: The ML 350 Bluetec has an impressive suite of standard safety equipment. There鈥檚 the usual stability control, traction control, ABS, EBD and brake assist, but it鈥檚 augmented by active cruise control, lane keep assist and blind spot assist. All occupants get three-point seatbelts, and Benz鈥檚 Pre-Safe system is able to sense of loss of control and pre-emptively tightens seatbelts, closes windows and moves seats to best protect passengers in the event of a crash. A total of nine airbags are standard as well - dual front airbags, side airbags for both front and rear, full-length curtain and a driver鈥檚 knee airbag. Warranty: Three years, unlimited kilometres. Service costs: Service intervals are set for every 25,000km or 12 months, whichever occurs first. Consult your local dealership for maintenance pricing. 92,600) - The BMW X5 has quite a few things going for it.
Not only is it substantially cheaper, but the X5鈥檚 on-road handling is much sharper. The xDrive30d鈥檚 180kW/540Nm turbodiesel inline six isn鈥檛 quite as grunty as the Benz鈥檚 engine though and the ML 350 has the edge in outright refinement. The Q7鈥檚 interior looks a bit old-hat in comparison to the X5 and ML, but it reeks of quality and offers plenty of sprawling space. 11,400 makes up for it. If you鈥檙e after seven seats, the Audi should also be at the top of your shopping list - the ML and X5 are only five-seaters. With 180kW and 600Nm, the SDV6 variant of the Range Rover Sport doesn鈥檛 lag all that far behind the ML 350 Bluetec. However, with an average fuel consumption of 9.2 l/100km, it鈥檚 a much thirstier beast. It handles rather well for a vehicle its size, but the Range Rover Sport feels much tighter inside. 100k the Range Rover Sport SDV6 is at the pricier end of its segment. Note: all prices are Manufacturer鈥檚 List Price and do not include dealer delivery or on-road costs. The ML has trailed the X5 in sales for a while now, but since the latest M-Class鈥?arrival 12 months ago we wouldn鈥檛 be surprised if the situation were to soon reverse itself. In diesel form, it's as laden with torque and driveability as it is with refinement. For day-to-day driving, it鈥檚 hard to fault the ML 350. With a spacious cabin and an enormously practical boot, it certainly ticks the important boxes for luxurious family travel. While it is relatively expensive compared to most of its peers, you get what you pay for. Interested in buying MERCEDES-BENZ ML350? Visit our MERCEDES-BENZ showroom for more information.
Potholes and surface irregularities are absorbed by the excellent suspension without any drama, which typically means the vehicle will produce undue body roll under more athletic circumstances. Surprisingly enough, the tall-riding SUV maintains fairly flat, stable cornering. We have to wonder just how much those split stabilizer bars would add to the equation. The new electro-mechanical power steering system varies the amount of assist on hand exponentially according to your speed. In parking lot maneuvers, it takes less than an asthmatic wheeze to spin the wheel to lock, but gain some speed and the controls weight themselves nicely. At an interstate clip, the steering feels incredibly solid. Still, we wouldn't mind seeing the assist toned down below 10 mph. Unfortunately, brake feel on the 2012 M-Class still leaves something to be desired. Despite boasting large 13-inch rotors and floating calipers on all four corners, the pedal seems to sink by leaps and bounds before the vehicle loses any actual velocity. With its solid power, well-sorted suspension and speed-adaptive power steering, the brake system is the only missing ingredient in this otherwise impressive display. Mercedes-Benz reckons that the 2012 M-Class represents a three-percent price value increase for its consumers. 875 delivery and destination fee it takes to get the vehicle into your neighborhood. 1,500 should you decide you want to call the 3.0-liter diesel V6 your very own. Mercedes-Benz has managed to turn the M-Class into an easy-driving vehicle that's about as far from its lumbering predecessors as it gets. With a stable ride, copious power and solid fuel economy when equipped with the diesel engine, this SUV could be an ambassador for the future of its kind. While the rest of the world is running to the crossover craze, the ML350 BlueTec 4Matic proves that there's still plenty of life left in the SUV game.
