Rear Suspension Toe Links (Tie Rod Assemblies) - Larger Mounting Stud - Modification Procedure
Issue:
Beginning with VIN L06641,the inner mounting of the rear suspension toe links (tie rod assemblies) changed from 10 mm to 12 mm mounting stud
diameter. Toe links of early design are no longer available. If a replacement toe link is required, it is necessary to modify the rear cross member to
accept the later design of toe link. This modification must be performed on both sides of the vehicle and both toe links replaced with the later design,

even if the original need was only to replace one toe link.
Action:
If it is necessary to replace a rear toe link on a 2000 MY S-TYPE vehicle within the above VIN range, open out the inner mounting point in the rear
cross-member to 12.2 mm, to accept the mounting stud of the later design toe link. Toe links must be of the same design on both sides of the vehicle.
Both sides of the cross-member must therefore be modified and both toe links initially replaced.
1. After removing the toe link (Illustration 1), enlarge the existing 10 mm mounting hole to 12.2 mm diameter.
Depending on availability, use a 15/32" drill, rotary file or hand reamer to enlarge the hole, ensuring that the finished diameter remains
concentric with the existing hole.
Ensure that the specified 12.2 mm diameter is not exceeded.
2. Where necessary, use a hand file to clean up any drill swarf around the enlarged mounting hole.
3. Apply zinc-rich paint (depending on local availability) to protect the bare metal created by the drilling and filing operations.
4. Install the replacement toe link. Torque the inner stud mounting to 90 Nm (66 lb. ft.) Torque the hub carrier mounting to 100 Nm (14 lb. ft.)
5. Repeat the above on the opposite side of the vehicle.
6. Carry out rear suspension toe-in alignment. The data is in JTIS, Section 204-00, Specifications. Perform this operation before final tightening
of the toe link to the hub carrier.
