To Keep Things Eco-friendly Somewhat Greener

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the latest addition to the SLK Roadster lineup, the 2012 SLK55 AMG. For this iteration of the diminutive droptop, AMG is employing a naturally-aspirated version of Mercedes-Benz's 5.5-liter V8. The new aluminum engine is good for 415 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, which should be more than enough to motivate the little beast. To keep things eco-friendly somewhat greener, the new engine employs gasoline direct injection and a stop-start feature to help save fuel. The V8 exhales through twin exhausts, which have flaps that open to deliver a throatier sound when your right foot comes down. All the go bits are mated to AMG's seven-speed Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic cog box. Look for the hot-rodded SLK to arrive in showrooms early next year. It helps the driver in many situations to reduce the severity of rear-end collisions with the vehicle ahead and their consequences, or even to avoid them all together. The new Audi A6 Avant has an extensive package of restraint systems on board in the event of a collision. Audi active lane assist intervenes gently in the steering to help the driver keep the A6 Avant in its lane. The park assist system, which is optionally available with a reversing camera, relieves the driver from the hassle of steering when parking or exiting a parking space. The Audi side assist helps the driver when changing lanes; the night vision assistant marks detected pedestrians to make driving in the dark safer; and the speed limit display presents important road signs on the DIS display. The parking system plus with 360° display, which is a new assistance system at Audi, will follow somewhat later. Four small cameras - at the front, the rear and in the housings of the side mirrors - record images of the A6 Avant’s immediate surroundings. Fast software combines these images, and the driver can call up various views on the large onboard monitor. This technical system enhances safety while maneuvering and when pulling out from areas with obstructed views. The Audi A6 Avant will begin arriving in showrooms in key European markets in late summer. Its base price is 40,850 euros.

Ford's design team has also borrowed the mean look of the F-150 Raptor, characterized by the blacked-out grille, widened fenders, and chunky BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires. Ford has announced an overseas Raptor version of its new Ranger midsize pickup. It is also probable we'll see Ford Everest - the Aussie-developed SUV version of Ranger - rebadged as the Ford Bronco and built in the US for the American market. Ford Australia has admitted that high-end models account for nearly three quarters of Ranger sales, and it would not rule out a Ranger Raptor model joining the line-up. It defaults to Tour mode, where throttle response and steering feel and ride quality are tuned for maximum efficiency. We do know that the ELR will feature an electric drive unit, powered by a 16.5kWh T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack. This electric drive unit is good for 207 horsepower and will feature 295 pound-feet of instantly available torque. Additionally, the ELR will feature an 84-horsepower, 1.4-liter four-cylinder electric generator. Not an engine, folks, a generator to provide power to the drive unit, much like the Volt . Once the batteries become depleted, the generator kicks in to provide power to the electric drive unit, much like how an engine in gas cars spins the alternator to create current. As expected, the ELR does include regenerative braking that helps use the heat energy used in braking to recharge the batteries, but this one is different from most. This system includes a set of steering-wheel-mounted paddles that are not used for shifting the gears, like on the traditional car.
