Between the front and rear upgraded Mercedes Benz E350 wheels sit undercar LED lighting for safe entry during the dark hours of the night. The finishing touches to the exterior body work are two different exhaust end pipe options. Customers can order either the dual exhaust or quad exhaust tips that blend in with the upgraded body work. In addition to the new body upgrades, Piecha Design also offers two sets of rim and tire combinations to replace the stock Mercedes Benz E350 wheels. Piecha Design did not develop an upgrade program that increased the output of the engine, but did refine a few of the management systems that controls the performance. The Piecha Power Converter CS-RC helps by reprogramming the engine management to improve throttle response, quicken shift times, and create a more engaging driving experience. Customers of the E-Class Cabriolet can order a new roof module that allows for operation of the top at speeds of up to 40 km/h and one-touch function.
The CGI engine summons up an output of 215 kW/292 hp and 365 Newtonmetres of peak torque at 3000 rpm. 15 kW/20 hp and 15 Newtonmetres more respectively than the current V6 unit with port injection. Thanks to state-of-the-art engine technology, fuel consumption of the C 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY has been cut to approx. 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres (provisional NEDC figure), approx. C 350. As such, the new six-cylinder engine makes a major contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The six-cylinder engine demonstrates its particular strengths during stratified-charge operation when the powerplant operates with a high excess of air and is thus very fuel-efficient. High-speed, ultra-precise piezoelectric injectors are among the key components of the second-generation direct petrol injection system. The invention of these injectors has spawned virtually all the advances in the spray-guided combustion system. The piezoelectric valves open their injectors outwards to create an annular gap just a few microns wide, allowing the fuel jet to form with a uniform, hollow cone-shaped pattern. Thanks to millisecond switching times, the piezoelectric injectors also permit the multiple injection that promotes lean-burn operation and helps create the ideal conditions for the engine's exemplary consumption figures.
A high-pressure pump with downstream distributor and pressure valve supplies the fuel and regulates the amount delivered in accordance with requirements. With a pressure of up to 200 bar, the system develops around 50 times the fuel pressure of a conventional port-injection system. The combustion system developed by the Mercedes engineers, with multiple, closely spaced injections during each power stroke, also serves to enhance the V6 engine's smooth running and emissions characteristics. Measurements show that untreated emissions (hydrocarbons) are reduced by more than half in the warm-up phase. Active control of injection and combustion also produces higher temperatures in the exhaust manifold, thereby warming up the catalytic converters faster. The package of BlueEFFICIENCY measures for the direct-injection petrol unit incorporates further fuel-saving technologies besides. These include the newly developed windscreen made of laminated glass, which weighs around 1.2 kilograms less than before, forged lightweight wheels and low rolling resistance tyres. The needs-driven and therefore energy-saving control of the power steering also forms part of the standard specification on the C 350 CGI. Finally, Mercedes-Benz has further improved the saloon's very low aerodynamic drag by fitting new, streamlined exterior mirror housings. A variable radiator shutter improves the airflow around the front end and, depending on the driving situation, also allows control of the air supply to the six-cylinder engine in line with requirements.
With just one trim level available, Benz relies on three main optional packages to add extra luxury and performance to this sedan. These packages begin with the Driver Assistance package, which includes DISTRONIC PLUS with PRE-SAFE braking, Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. Next up is the Rear Seat Package, which adds in eight way power outer rear seats, five-passenger seating, quad-zone climate control and heated and ventilated rear seats. Lastly is the AMG Performance Package, which bumps the engine output to 563 horsepower and 664 foot-pounds of torque, increases the top speed to 186 mph and adds in a carbon-fiber engine cover. Competition for the S63 AMG is scarce, but close. The competition starts with the 2013 BMW 760Li, which features a 6.0-liter V-12 engine with 535 horsepower and 550 foot-pounds of torque, sprints to 60 mph in only 4.5 seconds and a 16-speaker, 600-watt, 7.1-channel audio system. Next up is the Audi S8, which comes with a 4.0-liter V-8 engine with 520 horsepower, a 3.9-secondsprint to 60 mph and standard quattro AWD. Lastly, you have the Jaguar XJ Supersport, which comes with a 5.0-liter V-8 engine with 510 horsepower, a 4.7-second 0-to-60 mph time and a massive 20-speaker sound system. Competition is fierce for the S63 AMG, but Mercedes and AMG have been doing this a long time. Even with its long-running tuning history, the S63 still needs to put its best foot forward to continue to compete.
