I Like What I See Here

One of the most iconic and recognizable cars of all time, the Porsche 911, has been pinched, pulled, poked, prodded and completely redone by those tireless engineers in Zuffenhausen. Fear not, ye Porschephiles, the new 911 looks to be a winner! With the initial public debut at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche has now released official pictures and information for the new sports car, following months of speculation and spy photos on the internet. What we have is a longer and wider yet lower and lighter vehicle. The most drastic change is a wheelbase 3.9 inches longer than the outgoing model. This will increase interior room, improve stability at high speeds, and also move the mass of the rear-mounted engine slightly forward in relation to the rear wheels, improving at-the-limit handling characteristics. Propulsion in the base 911 Carrera model is provided by a 3.4 liter boxer engine, smaller than the previous gen’s 3.6, yet with slightly more power at 350 hp and also better fuel efficiency. The uprated Carrera S gets the larger 3.8 liter engine with 400 hp on tap. The cars should accelerate from 0 - 60 mph in 4.4 and 4.1 seconds respectively, according to the folks at Porsche. Available transmissions will be the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox as well as a new 7-speed manual. Great care has been taken with interior revisions as well. Gone is the dated and somewhat sparse environment - purists called it “businesslike” - replaced by design cues taken from the Panamera and Carrera GT models. These changes produce a more enveloping environment while maintaining the sporting and driver oriented Porsche “feel”. 96,400. Porsche’s usual extensive list of options and customizations will be available as well…at a cost! I like what I see here. Porsche’s development team has done well with the latest 911 and it should be a great performer both on the road and in the showroom. Place that order now to get at the head of the list..!

Last but not least, the new Volkswagen is identified by its new Volkswagen door step inserts with "CrossGolf" signature in the front door entry area and pedal caps in a high-end aluminium look. Similar to the Golf Plus, the interior of the new Volkswagen CrossGolf is distinguished by a high variability and an especially high seat position. Furthermore, the VW CrossGolf offers plenty of leg room at both the front and rear seats. And that is not all: Depending on the position of the asymmetrically split, longitudinally adjustable and folding rear bench seat, the car's cargo capacity may be varied between a minimum of 395 litres and a maximum of 540 litres. When the rear bench backrests are fully folded, this creates up to 1,450 litres of storage volume. The Volkswagen CrossGolf comes from the factory with features that include electric adjustable and heated door mirrors, rear lights in LED technology, green tinted heat-insulating glass, daytime running lights and central locking with RF remote control. Options that Volkswagen is offering on the CrossGolf include details such as a leather interior ("Vienna" type), bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and a rearview camera. Customers who wish to simplify parking manoeuvres will want to order the Volkswagen CrossGolf with Park Assist and leave the steering to their Volkswagen. One of the few details that is not on the VW CrossGolf is a sport chassis. This is logical, since we're in a different department here. On the other hand, the Golf GTI and Golf R cannot be had with the 20 millimetres higher rough road chassis of the all-terrain Golf at any price. So thank goodness there the Volkswagen CrossGolf.

I heard a faint chafing sound, so to avoid doing any more damage, I decided to stop and have it flat-bedded back to Mercedes-Benz. On a recent press trip, a guy who's done brake testing for a supplier told me the pads had probably been burning. Using a fire extinguisher would have made a colossal mess and maybe made things worse. The best thing to do was jump in and cool the brake down with lots of air. Besides being fun to do, our figure-eight test gives us interesting lap times, lateral g numbers, and subjective impressions. But coincidentally, it's also a severe brake fade test. We actually used to do a brake fade test that amounted to six stops from 60 mph, decelerating at 0.5 g as measured by a crude g meter. We'd repeat it as quickly as possible using a hydraulic pressure sensor screwed onto the brake pedal to read pedal force. After several years, we stopped seeing any major fade issues and quit doing the test. We also quit checking that the parking brake was strong enough to hold the car on a steep hill. Our figure-eight test is much more severe than that old test, as it's repeated limit braking from higher speeds, and tires these days are way grippier. You almost can't configure a test to stress brakes any more than this. Because of that, I'm reluctant to get too excited when I see smoke afterward. Nobody punishes brakes more than we do in that test, so it has almost zero meaning in the real world. I say "almost" because every now and then, a car (usually a Ford) gets a soft pedal after maybe two laps, which is too soon.

Mercedes-AMG surely rocked the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show with its unveiling of the Project One concept car that promises more than 1,000 hp in its power unit. For those who could not wait for limited edition hypercar to be produced, Brabus presented an alternative with their very own Mercedes-AMG S65 Rocket 900 Cabriolet. As the name of the tuning package implies, it provides the Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet nearly 900 hp. Brabus retained the biturbo V12 engine of the range-topping convertible S-Class, but to achieve such power, the specialist increased the displacement of the engine from 6.0 liters to 6.3 liters. The boost also includes software upgrade, larger bores, bigger turbochargers, and better exhaust system. The final numbers in the tuned AMG S65 Cabriolet are 888 hp and 1,106 lb-ft of torque. However, Brabus capped the torque of the package to 885 lb-ft in order to preserve the engine’s reliability and ensure the safety of its customers based on a source. The upgrades allow the car to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 217 mph. There are subtle cosmetic enhancements outside the AMG S65 Cabriolet.
