2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 4MATIC Coupe Vs 2019 Maserati Gran Turismo

As you probably noticed from the table above, the AMG S 63 4MATIC® beats out the Gran Turismo in a variety of areas in the performance aisle. Yes, the price tags are virtually the same, but the specs and features under the hood are not. Besides blowing the Gran Turismo out of the water when it comes to horsepower and torque, the AMG S 63 4MATIC® somehow still manages to edge out its rival in fuel efficiency as well. How does it do it? The time-tested AMG sports engine has been refined over the years to match surprising efficiency in a car designed to reach exceedingly high levels of torque and horsepower. Add in an extra transmission speed in the AMG S 63 4MATIC® and you’re looking at more seamless gear changes and better top-end fuel efficiency. We can’t say too much about the Gran Turismo, but if you’re interested in the AMG S 63 4MATIC®, we have just what you’re looking for. The centre console is dominated by a clear new 7-inch touchscreen display on which you can access the latest version of Honda Connect with infotainment and connectivity systems integrated with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It couldn’t be said that Honda has gone over the top with personalisation options, but subtle customisation is available. Customers have a choice of two optional exterior styling finishes - Black Line and Orange Line. The Black Line and Orange Line add a front chin spoiler, side skirts and rear diffuser, as well as mirror caps in either black or orange. Orange Line also includes interior accents across the dashboard in the same vivid colour. A choice of 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheel designs can be specified, while a sporty tailgate spoiler is also available in body colour or Tuscan Orange. That said, the standard black alloys, which are standard except for the entry level car, look cool and the car looks especially good in blue, black or white. And finally, choose a new Civic hatchback and you’re buying British because Honda’s huge plant in Swindon is a global production for the car. Verdict: The new Honda Civic is a class act. Boasting distinctive, radical styling and plenty of tech, it’s rewarding to drive, spacious and safe. A welcome addition to the highly competitive family hatchback scene.

The navigation system of COMAND Online also has added functions. New features include a 3D display with virtual city views. Also new: routes covered can be recorded and repeated later, specific personal destinations can be entered and stored and three alternative routes can be displayed on the screen - one of them a particularly economical variant. As a first in the C-Class, the Becker MAP PILOT makes a low-cost navigation function, which can also be retrofitted, available for the entry-level Audio 20 radio. Its advantages over aftermarket solutions include integrated operation via the COMAND Controller and the Audio 20 display. Launched in summer 2007, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG rapidly established itself as a real best-seller in the AMG model range. Customers all over the world appreciated this unique combination of a powerful and torquey naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine, a distinctive sound, an agile sports suspension and expressive design. Over the past three and a half years more than 17,000 AMG enthusiasts have chosen the C63 AMG, 88 percent of them opting for the Saloon (Estate: 12 percent). The AMG Performance package, which has been available since autumn 2009, is proving particularly popular: over 30 percent of all the C63 AMG models delivered in 2010 were specified with this attractive option.

The suspension was magnificent, and the interior room welcomed. The Splitview DVD screen is a must-have option (watch our ShortCut video for a demonstration), and the temperature-controlled massaging seats were wondrous. Nitpicking here, but we weren’t really fond of the wood steering wheel. It gets very hot in the sun and slippery if you are the type that gets sweaty hands while driving. The paddle shifters are also a bit goofy on a vehicle of this size, even if it does wear AMG badging. Our GPS-equipped radar detector was frustrated attempting to capture a signal through the metallic laminate Mercedes uses to defrost the front glass and the aging COMAND infotainment/navigation joystick interface is still a bit cumbersome, despite a week’s worth of familiarization. The S63 AMG isn’t atmospherically pressurized, but it does circle the globe in a very unique orbit - almost untouched by its competition. The Porsche Panamera Turbo S is quicker and more agile, but its four-place cabin is much smaller and focused on a different mission.

The BMW Alpina B7 is performance-tuned but short on amenities, while the Jaguar XJ Supersport is big on luxury, but still short on power. The Bentley Continental Flying Spur is a worthy foil, but it’s more expensive even before piling on the options. The competition should be pleased to know that Mercedes-Benz doesn’t sell very many of these capable sedans. While the S550 is the volume model, the S63 AMG accounts for just over five percent of S-Class sales - it is every bit as rare as it is rapid. Comparing the sporty Benz to a future spacecraft isn’t as much of a stretch as you may think. The engineering team in Stuttgart developed the W221 platform to comfortably exceed human requirements for long-distance travel and AMG tuned it to get the job done with blazing speed. While the 2012 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG may not be properly configured for interplanetary transport, we can think of few vehicles that are as swift and luxurious for voyaging across the surface of our planet.
