BMW Group Czech Republic has prepared a new exclusive edition of the i3 and i8, but this isn’t your typical special edition model with a unique paint finish because the Bavarian automaker put actual 24-carat gold onto the paint job. The unique two-tone design features a gold front that transitions to a black rear end to emulate a black sky full of shining stars – hence why the unique models are dubbed the Starlight Edition. The cars were designed in collaboration with painter Miroslav Spicak and designer Zoltan Matuska.
The modifications were made in cooperation with Toplac, the official partner for BMW in the Czech Republic and representing the BASF paint manufacturer. The 23.75-carat gold dust, which is the maximum for this consistency, is provided by Liebscher Blattgold GmbH. According to BMW, a special process was developed to ensure the body colors transitioned smoothly. Both cars are covered with four layers of gold, and the final layer had to be applied by hand. Six layers of original BMW paint were also applied to add further visual depth. BMW hasn’t just applied gold to the exterior either. Inside, gold has also been applied to air-con vents, dashboard, steering wheel and side sills.
There’s also a commemorative plaque with the inscription “STARLIGHT Edition one of one”, making the exclusivity of these cars. Only one example of each model is being produced, with currently on display at the Prague showroom of Invelt. Both cars will also appear at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on July 4-5 before being sold at a charity auction with all proceeds being donated to the Dagmar and Václav Havel Foundation VIZE 97. Anyone care to guess how much these exclusive EVs will sell for?
