Squeak from Steering Gear
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation:
While turning the steering wheel, a squeak noise may be heard from the steering column area. This noise may be caused by a lack of lubrication to
the power steering gear pinion seal.
Action:
Only in the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure below to install a steering gear pinion seal kit.

DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
REPLACE STEERING GEAR PINION SEAL
1. Refer to Workshop Manual section 211-02: Power Steering > Removal and Installation > Steering Gear to remove the steering gear.
CAUTION:
Do not over-tighten vice or damage feed pipes.
2. Using soft-face jaws, secure steering gear in vice with pinion located vertically.
3. Remove and set aside the top white dust cover. (Figure 1)
4. Clean the cavity, housing and pinion of any excess grease.
CAUTION:
Do not damage pinion and pinion housing.
5. With a protective card against the pinion and the removed white dust cover to protect the pinion housing, use a suitable lever to remove and
discard the black dust excluder from the pinion housing. (Figure 2)
6. Using suitable internal pliers remove and set aside the circlip. (Figure 3)

7. Clean pin ion, housing and cavity of excess grease. (Figure 4)
NOTE:
If any gouge or scratch damage has occurred, a new steering gear must be installed.
8. Verify no damage has occurred to the pinion and housing.
9. Place clean adhesive tape around the pinion:
Starting at the lower pinion chamfer, wind the tape upwards to cover the pinion completely. (Figure 5)
10. Install by hand the new hydraulic top seal over the pinion.
11. Slide the new hydraulic top seal down the pinion. (Figure 6)
12. Using special tool LRT37-014 (303-518), fully install the new hydraulic top seal: (Figure 7)
^ Apply square and firm pressure to fully seat the seal in the housing against the top bearing.

CAUTION:
Do not use sharp objects to remove the adhesive tape.
13. Remove and discard the adhesive tape from the pinion.
CAUTION:
Ensure the circlip is correctly located in the slot by visually inspecting the extension of the circlip ears.
14. Install the circlip, ensuring correct location. (Figure 8)
15. Install by hand the new dirt excluder and top dust cover: (Figure 9)
^ Ensure the dirt excluder and dust cover are firmly seated.
16. Refer to Workshop Manual section 211-02: Power Steering > Removal and Installation > Steering Gear, and install the steering gear.
17. Start engine.
18. Verify no fluid leaks are evident from the steering housing.
