Audi R8 Splits In Half In Massive Crash

This driver is lucky to be alive.

There's been a recent spate of supercar accidents on public roads. First, a McLaren Senna slammed into a wall in Germany, then a Ferrari LaFerrari wrecked in Beverly Hills. Now, an Audi R8 has been destroyed on a wet road between Kastelbell and Latsch near the Austrian border in northern Italy. Unlike those other recent supercar crashes, however, the Audi R8 is a total loss. As you can see in the photos, the impact was so severe that the German supercar split into two pieces after being hit by a Volkswagen Transporter van.

Somehow, the driver walked away with only minor injuries according to Suedtirol News and the driver of the van was also just slightly injured. Both were treated for their injuries at a local hospital. It took authorities around two hours to clear the wreckage and reopen the road to traffic since there were a lot of spilt liquids to clear. What caused the accident isn’t known, but the driver most likely misjudged the road conditions and lost control of the V10-powered supercar while navigating the wet and twisty roads.

The front of the van took some damage in the accident and the left-front tire appears to have dislodged. The damage is light compared to the wrecked R8 however, as the rear detached from the rest of the body. Seeing the detached V10 engine and rear axle laying on the other side of the road is a distressing sight, but it’s fortunate the impact didn't damage the cockpit. It’s a testament to the R8’s rigid structure that the driver survived the crash, let alone with only minor injuries.
