It may sound hard to believe, but the current Aston Martin Vanquish was launched back in 2012. Despite a more recent update, we get the feeling that it won’t be around much longer. Aston Martin hasn’t given a specific death notice, but the writing is on the wall, and it’s called the DB11. For our latest review we managed to snag some time with the 2016 Aston Martin Vanquish Volante Carbon Edition and, to be completely honest, had very few complaints.
With its naturally aspirated 6.0-liter V12 producing 568 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, the Vanquish Volante (and its coupe sibling) is an absolute stunner, but it has fresh (internal) competition. The new DB11, with its twin-turbo V12 spitting out 600 hp and 516 lb-ft, costs a bit less and is clearly more powerful. Faster, too.
It’s not that we don’t like the Vanquish, it’s just that the DB11 already sort of takes its place as Aston Martin’s best Grand Tourer. On the other hand, it’s hard to argue against “no replacement for displacement.” And that’s why the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante, now and forever, is part of an engine era that will soon be gone. That alone may be the deciding factor for those stuck deciding between a new DB11 or Vanquish. Special thanks to Los Gatos Luxury Cars for letting us film the car.
