Revision:

Revised comprehensive tool kit

SUBJECT:

ALL MODELS

VEHICLES WITH ENGINES 104, 111, 112, 113, 119, 120, 601-606 UNIVERSAL TOOL FOR REMOVING AND INSTALLING VALVE

SPRINGS

This comprehensive tool kit is available for removing and installing valve springs. With this tool kit, the anchoring of the lever arm (Circle, Figure 1)

is achieved using the existing threaded holes in the cylinder head. On engines with hydraulic lifters, the valve keepers can be removed and installed

by pressing down on the valve spring with the mounting element. The mounting element will also work with angled valves, as in V8 and V12

engines, and in the confined space of the engine compartment. This permits the valve springs to be easily removed and installed in order to change

valve stem seals, for example, with the engine still installed in the vehicle. The tool kit comes with a German instruction sheet. Attached to this

Service Information is an English version of the Operating Instructions.

Please ensure that a copy of the English Operating Instructions is placed inside the tool kit upon purchase to facilitate proper use of this special tool.

Special Tools

Engines without hydraulic lifters, or engines where the camshaft must be removed to mount the tool (engines: 604-606).

The valve keepers are removed and installed with a magnetic pen (part no. 210 589 00 40 00) or a magnetic finger (part no. 116 589 06 63 00), after

pressing down on the valve spring with the spring compressor (7, Figure 2).

The adjustable anchor (18, Figure 2) is attached to the appropriate foot (12-15, Figure 2) which is screwed into the existing threaded holes in the

cylinder head (Figure 3). A selection of anchor feet (12 - 15, Figure 2) is available for the various engines.

Engines 111, 119, 601, 602 with hydraulic lifters (except diesel engines 604 - 606).

The valve keepers are removed and installed using a mounting element (8, Figure 4), which is guided into the hydraulic lifter bore through a guide

sleeve (10, Figure 4). Use the same anchors and feet as previously mentioned (12 - 15, Figure 2) to anchor the lever arm in the existing threaded

holes located in the cylinder head itself (Figure 3).

Valve keeper removal

Insert guide sleeve (10, Figure 4) into the hydraulic lifter bore. Insert mounting element. Mount lever arm and turn adjustment screw (8a, Figure 4)

until the inner alignment shaft noticeably engages between the valve keepers. Press down lever arm (valve keepers are released). Release tension and

remove valve keepers from mounting element.

Valve keeper installation

Insert valve keepers into mounting element, observing proper positioning. Press down mounting element and lift inner alignment shaft, via the

251

adjustment screw (8a, Figure 4). Release tension (valve keepers are installed).

Operating Instructions

1. REMOVING VALVE KEEPERS

1. Remove all necessary components to expose valve spring retainers, utilize known method to prevent valves from falling into the cylinders,

sharply strike the valve spring retainers with the mandrel as supplied in the tool kit.

2. Install guide sleeve (10 for OM601/OM602, or 11 for engine M111, Figure 1). Mount appropriate anchor foot in existing holes located in the

cylinder head.

3. Insert mounting element (8 for engine M111, or 9 for OM601/OM602, Figure 1), attach adjustable anchor (18, Figure 1) and lever arm (6,

Figure 1) and allow to rest on the studs of the mounting element.

4. Turn adjustment screw clockwise while gently pressing down with lever arm (6, Figure 1), until inner alignment shaft noticeably engages

between the valve keepers.

5. Press down on mounting element (8 or 9, Figure 1) with lever until the mounting element bottoms out.

6. Slowly release tension, valve keepers are now secured in the mounting element.

7. For Diesel engines: use guide sleeve (11, Figure 1) and mounting element (9, Figure 1) and then follow steps 4., 5., 6. noted in this procedure.

2. INSTALLING VALVE KEEPERS

252

1. Insert mounting element (8 or 9, Figure 2) and press down on adjustment screw and lever arm (6, Figure 2), simultaneously, until it bottoms

out.

2. Continue pressing down on lever arm and lift up adjustment screw. Valve keepers are installed.

3. Release tension and remove mounting element.
