Just about every auto manufacturer around is promising an onslaught of electric vehicles over the coming years. GM is no different but for the US market, its EV/hybrid range will be losing one model for the 2019 model year. GM Authority has just confirmed that the big CT6 Plug-in Hybrid sedan will not be carried over to 2019, an excerpt from the official statement reads:
"Cadillac remains committed to electrified systems for our vehicles. Although production of the CT6 Plug-in for North America is discontinuing for the 2019 model year, alternative fuel vehicles remain a part of our future product portfolio as we move deeper into our 10-year plan. GM has committed to 20 electric vehicles by 2023, some of which will be Cadillacs’.
The decision is not entirely surprising, the CT6 Plug-in Hybrid was quite a niche product on our market and at a starting price of $76,090, it was competing with some pretty accomplished opposition. Still, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine and electric motor combo delivered 335 horsepower and 432 lb ft of torque, which gave the big sedan impressive performance.
The 0-60 mph time of 5.2-seconds was actually quicker than what the 404-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo CT6 could manage and the 65 MPGe fuel economy and 400-mile range were an added bonus. Make the most of the 31-mile all-electric range and your daily commute would save you in fuel bills too.
GM says that the CT6 Plug-in Hybrid will remain in production in China, where it was initially introduced to meet compliance criteria. Fans of alternatively fueled Cadillacs may not have to wait long for another EV model though as Cadillac revealed it will be pushing forward with its electrification strategy across multiple models in the coming months.
In the meantime, why not put in an order for what is sure to be an even rarer model, the upcoming high-performance CT6-V? Its twin-turbo 4.2-liter V8 is unlikely to win it any economy awards but that won't deter most customers anyway.
