Starting System - No or Slow Crank After Water Immersion

No: LTB00073

Issue: 1

Date: 31 Jul 2007

SECTION: 303-06

Starter Breather Extension for Arduous Use Vehicles

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Land Rover LR2 (LF) VIN: ALL

CONDITION SUMMARY:

INSTALL EXTENDED BREATHER TO PREVENT STARTER DAMAGE

Situation:

The vehicle may fail to crank when attempting to start, or may crank slowly. The condition is likely following immersion in water such as when

negotiating a stream or other deep water. Water may have entered the starter motor via the breather tube.

Action:

Should a customer complain of these symptoms, a 'snorkel' kit should be installed to allow the starter motor to 'breathe' above the wading line to

prevent a repeat occurrence after appropriate starter repairs if required.

PARTS

WARRANTY:

NOTE:

Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only.

Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.

DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

INSTALL EXTENDED STARTER BREATHER TUBE

WARNING:

Work should not be done under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

1. Raise and support the vehicle on a ramp.

NOTE:

Global Technical Reference (GTR) lookup sequence is as follows:

GTR Home > NAS > LF - LR2> Service Information/ 2008 > Workshop Manuals > Bookmark "Body and Paint/501-02 Front End Body

Panels" LINK "Engine Undershield"

2. Refer to GTR Workshop Manual Section 501-02 and remove the undershield to access the starter motor.

3. Remove the originally installed "short" vent tube from starter motor and discard.

4. Insert the elbow of the new long vent tube (LR005926) into the vacated hole in the starter motor, ensuring that the clip latches positively.

5. Route the long vent tube to follow the starter motor B+ cable forwards across the oil pan and then up towards the battery. (Figure 1)

6. Attach the tube to the electrical harness with tape taking care to avoid kinks or distortions to the tubing.

7. Loop approximately the last 100 mm (4 inches) of the tube back on itself without kinking it. (Figure 2)

8. Tape to loop in position so that the end of the tube is pointing down. (Figure 2)

9. Refer to GTR Section 501-02 and install the undershield.
