BMW didn't do a great job keeping the new M5 Competition a secret. Information was leaked early, so we already knew what the new car would be like. Regardless, BMW has now officially revealed the M5 Competition, along with all of the juicy details. For starters, the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine now makes 625 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. This is an increase of 25 hp over the standard car. The torque figure remains the same, but the Competition has a wider torque band than the standard M5.
BMW claims a 0-60 mph time of 3.3 seconds, which is the same as the standard M5, but 0-124 mph is now 0.3 seconds quicker at 10.8 seconds. The M5's massive grunt should sound even better on the Competition model thanks to a standard M Sport exhaust system with black chrome tips. BMW says this twin-pipe, flap-controlled exhaust generates a unique soundtrack. Other changes to the Competition include stiffer engine mounts, model-specific chassis tuning, adjustments to springs and dampers, lower suspension, and new mountings for the rear anti-roll bar. All of these small changes add up to a stiffer, more aggressive M5.
The Competition also gets exclusive 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, with a Y-spoke design. These wheels are wrapped in w75/35 R 20 tires at the front and 285/35 R 20 tires at the rear. Buyers will be able to tell the M5 Competition apart thanks to high-gloss Shadow Line trim, high-gloss black for the kidney grille surrounds, decorative mesh gills, and unique rear bumper trim and mirror caps. The rear trunk badge also adds the word "Competition" and the interior gains unique M-colored seat belts as well as an "M Competition" splash screen when the car is started up. The M5 now looks poised to dominate the mid-size performance sedan segment.
