SUBJECT
RHT Stops Opening in the Stacked/Extended Position
MODEL
E93 (3 Series Convertible)
SITUATION
When opening the Retractable Hardtop (RHT), the RHT panels stack and the trunk lid opens, but the RHT stops in this position and will not move
into the trunk.
CAUSE
The contact mechanism for the "roof package stowed" hall sensor is stuck down, causing the sensor to always read "No". This incorrect status
prevents the RHT from continuing its operation.
CORRECTION
Ensure that the contact mechanism can move freely so that the hall sensor status will change as necessary.
PROCEDURE
1. Inspect the "roof package stowed" hall sensor contact mechanism (1) to verify that it is in fact stuck in the down position.
2. Remove the hall sensor bracket by releasing the 2 fasteners (1).
NOTE:
Mark the location of these fasteners with a paint marker prior to removal, to ensure the correct position upon reinstallation.
3. Inspect the contact for the hall sensor:
^ If the contact is difficult to move but is not bent, lubricate the pivot point with silicone spray and ensure the pivot is not binding.
^ If the contact is bent and binding, bend it back into the correct position such that it will move freely.

^ If the wire harness leading to the hall sensor has come free from its retaining clip, thus trapping the contact, secure this harness back into the
retaining clip.
4. Reinstall the hall sensor, making sure that the fasteners are back to their pre-removal position.
5. Ensure proper RHT operation.
