GM has announced that more than seven million owners of eligible Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles in the USA can now enjoy the convenience of getting their Amazon packages delivered directly inside their vehicle. Using Amazon Key, In-Car Delivery comes at no extra cost to Amazon Prime members who own a GM vehicle with an active OnStar account. Initially the service will be available in 37 US cities, with more locations to follow shortly.
“Partnering with Amazon to leverage our embedded in-vehicle connectivity gives Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac owners the option to conveniently receive deliveries inside their vehicle parked at home, work or near other locations in their Amazon address book,” said Alan Batey, President, General Motors North America. “This is another example of how we provide customers with technologies that add value and enhance the ownership experience.” The service allows packages to be delivered to a vehicle when it’s parked on the street in front of an apartment building, at a workplace parking lot that’s not underground, or even in your home driveway to prevent package jacking.
How it works is, before couriers gain access to the customer's car, Amazon uses an "encrypted authentication process" to make sure the right courier is present in the right location with the right package. Then, after authorization, the car is unlocked so drop off can occur. Shoppers will get alerts notifying them of the package’s imminent arrival and subsequent delivery. Setting up Amazon Key In-Car Delivery is easy. Just download the Amazon Key App and opt to seamlessly link your Amazon and OnStar accounts. Once the first step is complete and the delivery location has been registered, customers can shop on Amazon.com and select the “In-Car” delivery option at checkout.
