TRC Makes NC Rowing History at The Head of the Charles in Boston 2018

Triangle Rowing Club (TRC) just made N.C. Rowing HISTORY!!! TRC’s Women’s Youth 4+ are the first N.C. Youth boat to ever to get an automatic rebid for the Head of The Charles Regatta (HOCR)!! Brooke Benestad of Cary High School, Sophia VonDauber and Isabella Humbert, both of Apex Friendship, Jane Atkeson of Ravenscroft School and Ella Hill (Coxswain) of Broughton High School, navigated and rowed a phenomenal race on Sunday, October 21st in one of the most prestigious regattas in the world. There were 84 boats entered in their race from some of the oldest and largest rowing clubs in the US, Canada and the UK. The HOCR welcomes 400,000 spectators from all over the world each year. Our TRC Youth Womens 4+ were newcomers to the event, however they managed to finish 16th out of 84 boats! Typically the top half of the finishers are awarded an automatic rebid for the next Fall. Of the 42 boats awarded rebids, only 6 were newcomers to the event, with TRC being the fastest newcomer to join the group. With staggered start times for the serpentine 5K course, boats who have not rowed in the HOCR previously are given later launch times; return boats are able to launch in the first spots. What this means for newer boats is needing to maneuver more passes throughout the race. Finishing well within the top twenty is an EPIC feat for TRC, especially given that they were the 71st boat to launch! The TRC Youth Women’s 4+ is now automatically invited back next year with a launch position of 16. This is a wonderful advancement for North Carolina Rowing! “I’m extremely proud of this crew. This was a big step forward for TRC and youth rowing in North Carolina,” said Head Coach Will White. “We took a lineup that had never even raced together, and were able to compete at the highest level, against the best programs in the country and beyond. Earning a rebid to this event in 2019 puts TRC into some very elite company.”
Our athletes continue their unwavering commitment to training and are eagerly anticipating another stellar TRC performance at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, TN November 3-4.
