Triangle Rowing Club Strikes Fear in the Minds of VA Coaches as Novice Boats Swept the Competition

RALEIGH, N.C. – Good coaches look to the future and the future is bright for the rising power of the Triangle Rowing Club. Sixteen prestigious rowing clubs from Virginia and DC were shocked when the Novice rowers from the formidable club in North Carolina captured 1st place in all 4 Novice events - Men's 4+ & 8+ and Women’s 4+ & 8+. TRC continued its dominance in the sweeps boats with the Varsity Men’s 8+ & 4+ taking 1st place in both races and our Mixed 8+ claiming victory as well. All counted, TRC won 7 out of 15 events with 14 top 3 finishes.
The TRC Women’s 8+ was also powering to a sure victory with a commanding lead until disaster struck.
It is a beautiful sight when eight athletes are rowing as one, in a rhythmic sequence smooth and powerful. But in this great power there is risk, and we witnessed the carnage in the last 100 meters of the Women’s Varsity 8 race when the TRC boat “caught a crab” on the return stroke and slammed against the boat, pinning the oar along the side. Enormous torsional forces from the boat's momentum kept the oar pinned until the rowers were able to bring the boat to a complete stop to relieve the pressure. After correcting the situation, the young women sprinted to the finish to try to capture the highest place possible.
“It is an exciting sport with the real prospect of calamity that became more real to our athletes this weekend. I am very proud of them and our team and the effort they are willing to give in each of these races,” said TRC Head Coach Will White.
Next up for Triangle Rowing is the inaugural NC Rowing Championships in High Point, NC on April 22nd. They hope to see their local rowing fans out there to witness what will be a fierce competition between the NC rivals.
