With the third row in use 鈥?and for my family of five, it must be 鈥?cargo space diminishes significantly from 49.4 cubic feet to just 16 cubic feet. With more useful cargo space behind the third row, this car would be priceless; as it stands, the 2017 GLS comes at a price. It鈥檚 up to you whether you鈥檙e willing to pay it.





The same can be said of braking performance, and pedal response and feel isperfectly calibrated. Standard air suspension is a godsend on uneven terrain, and imperfections in the road hardly bother anyone inside, including third-row occupants. When it鈥檚 not folded, that third row is distinguished by the capability to comfortably accommodate claustrophobic six-foot adults. As far as the optional driver assistance technologies are concerned, the smoothness and acuity of the active cruise controlimpressed me, but the calibration of steering assist and lane-keep assistsystems was a bit of a letdown. Despite envisioning the GLS asa grander SUV to lead the lineup, Mercedes-Benz continues to price itlike an E-Class, not an S-Class. The starting price remains close to the outgoing GL鈥檚, at justunder 68 grand. Pricing certainly reflects this SUV鈥檚 status as anevolutionaryrather than revolutionaryGLS.However, withthe name change, it鈥檚 a fair bet that Mercedes-Benz plansgreateralignment between the GLS-Classand S-Class models atsome point in the future.
