Jaguar product planning boss Hanno Kirner believes the instant torque and power found in a hypothetical I-Pace SVR could be too much for untrained drivers. While he stopped short of confirming a high-performance version of the electric crossover, he made it clear such a vehicle is on the table. Kirner told Autocar in a Tuesday report that an I-Pace SVR would likely be capable of reaching 60 mph in 1.8 seconds, but engineers also want to prioritize handling鈥攏ot just headline-grabbing specs. Tesla has already made plenty of headlines in recent years for offering hypercar levels of acceleration with the Model S and Model X electric cars. The 2020 Tesla Roadster will also allegedly reach 60 mph in 1.9 seconds. The product planning chief envisioned some sort of power restriction for a potential I-Pace SVR. Kirner said the vehicle could reduce power for a driver until he/she has attended a driving course or some other instruction. Although Jaguar hasn't committed to such a model, the brand's top brass certainly do like to talk about the idea of one. Last March, Kirner first expressed interest in building an I-Pace performance variant. At that time, he also said there remains a possibility for other I-Pace models, including an off-road or more luxurious version. Kirner echoed the sentiment in the latest Autocar report. John Edwards, head of Jaguar Land Rover's personalization and performance arm, also hinted earlier this year that Jaguar will eventually develop a full range of performance-oriented electric cars. The British luxury brand will also take the I-Pace racing in its own one-make series held before Formula E open-wheel electric-car races.

The e-tron is Audi鈥檚 first all-electric production car. GT concept. Our first drive takes place in the Middle East, seemingly an odd choice of location given the region鈥檚 plentiful oil reserves and rock-bottom fuel prices. In fact it鈥檚 rather appropriate, with places such as Abu Dhabi investing heavily in solar energy. Soon, electricity will be as cheap as petrol here. On paper, the e-tron looks competitive. It claims more than 400km (249 miles) from a charge; even in the desert with the air-con on full blast, it still manages 220 miles. Connected to a fast charger, the e-tron will go from zero to 80 per cent in 30 minutes. Audi has also promised customers access to more than 70,000 charge stations across Europe. The tech is known as e-roaming, and drivers will need only a single contract and a single card. Unfortunately, e-roaming hasn鈥檛 been confirmed for UK buyers yet. Even our early test car puts the Model X in the shade when it comes to interior fit and finish. True, the Tesla鈥檚 huge screen is fascinating, but quality could be better.
In photos the Audi doesn鈥檛 seem quite modern enough, but here in Abu Dhabi - among all the AMGs, Rolls-Royces and Ferraris - it looks seriously futuristic. It uses the dual-screen set-up seen in the A6, A7 and A8, with the same haptic feedback and a near-identical menu layout. Of course, connectivity is top notch, offering Audi鈥檚 own intuitive system alongside Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is up there with other EVs (and ahead of many) on dynamics, even if it鈥檚 slightly slower than a Tesla. The drive system, with an electric motor on the front axle and another on the rear, produces 402bhp and automatically controls power distribution in a fraction of a second. But even in Dynamic mode, it lacks the Model X鈥檚 explosive acceleration. However, the Audi really scores with its superb balance. Also, the aerodynamics and sound insulation have been fine-tuned to eliminate nearly all wind and road noise; we can鈥檛 think of any other car that鈥檚 as smooth or quiet as the e-tron. A glance at the speedo shows how good this is. The cabin is so incredibly hushed, and imposes such an unprecedented feeling of calm, that you don鈥檛 notice your speed creeping up on the motorway. It鈥檚 comfortable, too, and although the e-tron is based on a heavily modified Q5 platform, it鈥檚 far more spacious than that car. Elsewhere, the e-tron is the first production model to come with the option of cameras instead of conventional door mirrors. These improve the car鈥檚 aerodynamics, and relay images on high-resolution seven-inch OLED displays in the door panels. The rest of the e-tron is everything you鈥檇 expect from Audi: a high-class finish combined with digital instruments. It features extras synonymous with this type of luxury car, too, including an ioniser and a fragrancing system.
Porsche has upgraded its 911 GT3 R race car for the 2013 season. For starters, the GT3 R, based on the 997-generation 911, receives wider fender flares front and rear. This means that the successful customer racer, fielded in GT3 classes, looks considerably brawnier than its predecessor. According to Porsche, the new aerodynamics generate 鈥渟ubstantially more downforce,鈥?allowing for higher cornering speeds and later braking points. The wider track and the adapted wheels provide additional improvement in traction. Ever since its launch in 2010, customer teams around the world have embraced the 911 GT3 R. In 2012, Porsche customer teams raced the 500-horsepower production-based machine in 131 races, won 41 of them and clinched numerous championships. For 2013, Porsche Motorsport's modified aerodynamics extend to the front bumper panels, all fenders, the sill covers, the rear panel and underbody with rear diffuser; all received further fine-tuning in the wind tunnel. Porsche enlarged the rear wing to the width of the car and repositioned it to work best with the redesigned body. The suspension also underwent modifications. The track of both the front and rear axle grew by 50 millimeters. The width of the front rims is now 12 inches instead of 10.9. The wheelbase of the latest 911 GT3 R increases by 10 millimeters. Like its predecessor, the 4.0-liter, flat-six engine produces 500 hp. Porsche's six-speed sequential dog ring-type gearbox with pneumatic shift system is operated via shift paddles on the steering wheel. Porsche is also offering customers a conversion kit to update older 911 GT3 Rs to 2013-spec. The kit is available from Porsche Motorsport for 鈧?5,500 (approx.
