2019 Ford Mach-E Speculative Review (updated)

2019 Ford Mach-E Speculative Review (updated)

Scroll to the bottom of the page to see a full gallery! A new leak uncovered by buzznwood at the Mach-E Forum and originally reported by Electrek exposed some fresh information about the Mach-E. Ford has since taken down the pages that were found, but not before the buzznwood took some screen shots. BREAKING: 2021 Ford Mach E Electric SUV Spied in Production Guise First Look! A twitter post gave us our first prototype look at the Mach-E ahead of its debut. To us, it looks a little bit like a Maserati Levante or the 2013 Infiniti FX, mostly because of the sloping roofline. However, we did get a look at the Mustang-style taillights which confirms the rumors that it would carry a lot of Mustang DNA. When Ford announced the Mach-E鈥檚 online debut of November 17, 2019, it also released a short video that more or less looks at history, but does give us a look at the Mach-E鈥檚 new logo and confirms the Mach-E name.

The two teasers shown above didn鈥檛 reveal much, but we originally believed that the Ford Mach-E would debut at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show. In the teaser video Ford put out, we saw a Ford Explorer and a Ford Mustang pulling into a garage. The name of the video was 鈥淭he inspiration behind Ford鈥檚 New Battery Electric Performance SUV.鈥?Naturally, and logically, one would assume that we should expect an Explorer-like vehicle with Mustang styling cues. But, then we got to thinking, and that鈥檚 probably not the case. The Explorer is top heavy and just doesn鈥檛 have a design that can really work together with the 鈥減erformance鈥?label. As such, we think that the Mach 1 will be more of a four-door hatchback on stilts like you see above. It鈥檒l feature a mustang front end, a taller roof, and a rear end that鈥檚 a bit taller but certainly reminiscent of the 2018 Mustang rear end. Admittedly, we were pretty lax on the height of this crossover, but rest assured, it will have significant ground clearance, and it will compete in the crossover market. So, why did we go with a high-riding, sedan-style crossover?

Well, because it鈥檚 the next move in the market and we鈥檙e already seeing prime examples. Just look at the Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury - that thing is definitely a shortened sedan on stilts. The brand also has the GLC and GLE Coupes already on the market. And, what about the BMW X4 and BMW X6? There鈥檚 a strong case for jacked up cars on the market these days. And, since the Mach 1 will be an all-electric model with plenty of performance, there鈥檚 no reason it can鈥檛 take on the higher-classed German brands, even if it does so on battery power alone. What you can really expect is familiar front and rear ends with a much taller center section. The body will probably sit higher than what you see in our rendering as it will be able to do some minor off-roading too. It won鈥檛 be able to climb rocks and tackle sand dunes - it鈥檚 not Jeep Wrangler by any means - but it won鈥檛 feel lost on a back road or mild two-track if that鈥檚 where you鈥檝e got to go.

And, we know it鈥檒l be a five-door model too, so we鈥檝e added in the rear passenger doors and, while you can鈥檛 see it in this rendering, there鈥檚 a rear hatch back there too. Oh, and that front grille. Yeah, we know it鈥檚 not necessary, but Ford will be relying on the clout carried by not only the Mach-E name but the Mustang name as well, so it needs to look the part. If Ford is smart, that grille will be aerodynamic and will probably offer up some form of cooling for the battery or electric motors. The interior design is a huge wild card. It could feature the same dash as the 2018 Mustang that you see in the picture above. If this is the case, however, there will be some differences. For instance, there isn鈥檛 going to be a gear shifter as this thing is all-electric. So, the center console will probably feature something a little different.

Expect to see backlit cupholders front and center, a wireless charging pad for phones and (maybe) tablets. The center stack could carry over unchanged, with the exception of the software which will be more catered to the Mach-E name, including special 鈥淢ach-E鈥?graphics on startup and different menu coloring to help enhance the performance feel inside. To go with this system will be a bespoke instrument cluster that is also all-digital and will probably feature Mach-E-specific menus and digital gauges. In the Mustang, this dash can be customized with various colors of your choice so expect that feature to be there no matter what. A flat bottom, perforated steering wheel will be in place as will supportive seats that are both heated and cooled. In the rear, Ford could go two different ways. With that in mind, expect to see tons of leather and probably some Alcantara here and there. Again, Ford is moving up a class here, so the materials with be plentiful and upscale.
