The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a line of compact executive cars produced by Daimler AG. Although originally sold as sedan and station wagon, the W203 series in 2000 debuted a fastback/hatchback coupe version that, when facelifted, became the Mercedes-Benz CLC-Class. The CLC-Class remained in production until 2011 when it was replaced by a new W204-based C-Class coupe for the 2012 model year. In October 1986, 3 years into Mercedes-Benz W201 (190)'s production run, work began on a successor. During the 1996 and 1997 Formula 1 seasons, the C36 AMG served as the sport's Safety Car. In 1994, development began on the W203 C-Class. Design work commenced in mid-1994, with the final design being approved in December 1995 by the executive board. Testing began in 1997, with development concluding in 2000. The second generation C-Class was introduced in March 2000. The sedan debuted with a range of inline-four and V6 petrol engines and inline-four and -five diesels. Most of the engines were carried over from the W202, but the C 320 was exclusive, offering 160 kW (218 PS).

The diesels now featured common rail direct fuel injection and variable geometry turbochargers. 2007 Geneva Auto Show. Sales started on 31 March 2007 in almost all European countries. The new family had an extended wheelbase and tracks, a stiffer bodyshell and a design inspired by the W221 S-Class with some influences from the C219 CLS-Class. The C-Class received a facelift in 2011 for the 2012 model year including new LED taillights, a revised dashboard and instrument cluster layout, and a revised front fascia and headlights. The current generation W205 C-class was launched at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. It is the first car to use the all-new Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) platform. The new structure is significantly lighter using aluminium extensively throughout the body, resulting in a 220-pound weight decrease. According to Mercedes-Benz, the structure will be much more rigid than other vehicles in its class. W205 production commenced on 4 February 2014 at the Bremen plant. On 10 December 2009, Daimler announced the production of the C-Class will be concentrated at the Bremen plant with additional production in the United States for the local market. Siemens, employing prototype hybrid technology, showed off a modified Mercedes C-Class Sport Coupe that boasts faster acceleration, more torque鈥攁nd better fuel economy鈥攖han its gasoline-powered equivalent. However, the company admitted that the car was "far from ready for production", and too expensive to manufacture or sell. Karmann also showed a concept of the W203 Sportcoupe (prefacelift), which was turned into a convertible car with softtop. This prototype never reached production status.

Mercedes-Benz controls the MAGIC VISION CONTROL system intelligently via three partly autonomous wash programs - for summer, for winter and for cabriolet driving. It is the first windscreen wipe/wash system anywhere in the world to operate in this way. In summer, small quantities of water are sufficient to remove a light powdering of dust. In winter the dirt mixed with de-icing salt requires a greater amount of water. The MAGIC VISION CONTROL system works in accordance with the outside temperature, and it also automatically adapts the washer fluid quantity to the surrounding conditions. On request the MAGIC VISION CONTROL wiper blades are completely heated on the new SL, making Mercedes-Benz the first manufacturer in the world to offer a fully heated wiper/washer system. It consists of a washer fluid container heated through coolant waste heat, electric heating for the entire hose system and, as a newly-developed highlight, a fully heated wiper blade. This effectively prevents the formation of snow on the wiper blades, so typical in winter. To do this each of the spring rails of the blade is equipped with a heater foil with an output of 35 watts per blade. It heats the spoiler and the wipe lip. Snow and ice cannot freeze onto the blade; it remains supple in winter, too, and always cleans well. The heating is also controlled as required according to the duration of operation and the outside temperature. It is only below a temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius that the system makes use of the entire system鈥檚 maximum output, 270 watts. Between 5 degrees above and 20 degrees below zero the heating operates in an energy-saving mode and only requires the output needed to thaw out the wiper/washer system and keep it free of snow and ice.

In a choice that oozes sincerity if not finely honed customer research, Mercedes-Benz's marketing team decided the secret to selling more small vehicles to Americans was to make them look more like traditional sedans. That's the origin story for the 2019 Mercedes A220 4Matic sedan, which offers a more conventional, upright profile than the sleek CLA that was the first front-wheel drive compact car Mercedes sold in the United States. Because, like, everybody knows Americans love sedans. That's why the body style hit an historic low at less than 30 percent of 2018 vehicle sales. Ford decided to stop selling them in favor of vehicles with SUV looks because selling sedans is so easy and profitable that it was beneath the Blue Oval to continue doing so. Maybe Mercedes knows something other automakers don't, or maybe it figured it was building the new A-class anyway, so what the heck? Why not ship a few to America to see if it's the small sedan Americans have been waiting for?

Either way, the A220 is in dealerships, offering Mercedes's new and vastly improved controls and creative and attractive interior design. Reasons to buy: Interior look and feel; rear headroom; handling. Shortcomings: Trunk space; rear legroom, no USB A-type ports; cost.. The A220 is the sedan version of Mercedes' new compact architecture. Competitors include small luxury cars such as the Audi A3, BMW 2-series coupe, Cadillac ATS, Jaguar XE and Volvo S60. The A220 is similar in size to Mercedes's sleeker CLA, which is currently in its last model year before a new, bigger version model arrives late this year. At 179.1 inches long, the A220 is 2.2 inches shorter than the 2019 CLA and 5.5 inches shorter than the coming 2020 CLA, with which it shares its architecture and wheelbase. The A220 is 3.6 inches shorter than a Honda Civic sedan, so you can see we're talking about a small car. A 2.0-liter engine, front-wheel drive and seven-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission are standard. All-wheel, which Mercedes calls 4Matic, is optional. Mercedes will also build a small GLA SUV based on the architecture. That's virtually certain to be the best-selling model in the company's compact line when it reaches U.S.
