Ford To Unveil Electric Mustang Sunday

Ford To Unveil Electric Mustang Sunday

America's iconic muscle car -- the Ford (F - Get Report) Mustang -- is going from gas guzzler to gas-free, as the new all-electric Mustang Mach-E is slated to debut Sunday night in Los Angeles. The car showing will be live-streamed on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, according to the company, which released few details about the showing or the car, except that actor Idris Elba will help introduce the vehicle. Set to become available in about a year, the new Mustang will have a "targeted EPA-estimated range of at least 300 miles," said Ford. An electric Mustang would be a dramatic departure from the classic car's earlier models that got relatively poor gas mileage. 8,250 in gas over five years vs. Other new Mustangs offer somewhat better gas mileage, but in general rated more poorly than efficient vehicles. The event is slated to begin streaming at 9 p.m. 500 refundable reservation deposit.

It鈥檚 very much a performance vehicle, though, and Ford says different configurations can reduce the acceleration time to mid-five seconds. The least powerful Mustang will make about 255 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. 282 and 332 hp, with 417 lb.-ft. It will make about 459 hp and 612 lb.-ft. All of Ford鈥檚 numbers are not yet final, since the Mach-E is still a year away from production. In simpler terms, Ford says the most basic Mach-E is comparable to a Porsche Macan, while the GT Performance is right up there with a Porsche 911 GTS. The Mach-E will feature the next generation of Ford's SYNC connectivity suite. It is a particularly clever vehicle, built with a consolidated computer system of basically three CPUs that allows easy software updates while plugged in, like Tesla does. It will have the next generation of Ford鈥檚 SYNC connectivity, which allows more intuitive interaction between the car and its driver. Like to work out on a Monday? And under the hood, which is traditionally where everything counts for a Mustang? Now there鈥檚 a 鈥渇runk,鈥?a front trunk similar to a rear-engined Porsche, with enough space for an airline carry-on bag. The Mach-E is a serious and very accomplished vehicle. Is it really a Mustang? We鈥檒l find out in the next year or so. We have a Drive newsletter covering car reviews, innovative new cars and the ups and downs of everyday driving.

For the 1969 model year Ford released an updated Mustang which was slightly bigger and heavier than previous Mustang offerings. The 1969 styling changes gave the Mustang a bolder and more muscular look, and backing up the look was a whole array of hot performance engines. The Best of which were Ford鈥檚 FE big-block 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet (CJ) and Super CobraJet (SCJ) V8s, which gave the Mustang true street performance credentials. Also on the engine option list for the 1969 Mustang was the Boss 429 cubic-inch V8 which was Ford鈥檚 version of the Chrysler 426 cubic-inch Hemi V8. Though the 428 CJ and SCJ could be ordered in different Mustang trim packages, most 428 CJ and SCJ V8s were ordered with the Mach 1 Mustang model. The Mach 1 was only available with the fastback roofline. The Mach 1 had seven different performance engine options available. The 428 CJ and 428 SCJ were the Mach 1鈥檚 best performance engine options. The 428 CJ and 428 SCJ were both rated at 335 horsepower which was a wink-wink - 鈥測eah right鈥?horsepower rating. True output for both engines touched 400 horsepower at the very least.

The CJ was an engine option, the SCJ the upgraded version of the 428 CJ was what the buyer automatically got when the low 3.91 rear axle ratio or 4.30 rear axle ratio was ordered. The upgrades the CJ received to become a SCJ were 427 racing sourced capscrew connecting rods, an upgraded harmonic balancer, and a few other upgrades. By the middle of the 1969 model year Ford introduced a drag pack option for the 428 (which required a 3.91 or 4.30 axle ratio with) this gave the buyer a few performance upgrades including the 428 SCJ. In essence the 428 SCJ wasn鈥檛 an official engine option because the only way it could be obtained was ordering the Drag Pack or by ordering just the 3.91 rear gear ratio or 4.30 rear gear ratio. Both the CJ and SCJ could be ordered with the optional Ram Air induction system which consisted of a shaker hood scope with the open air inlet facing the front of the car.
