The Tesla Incident Is Extremely Unfortunate
Though the German automaker鈥檚 new sedan contains some automated-driving technology, it鈥檚 not a car capable of driving itself in all scenarios. The E-class is 鈥渁 technological tour de force and is a significant step towards achieving our vision of an accident-free future,鈥?a company spokesperson said in a written statement. The company鈥檚 decision comes amid fresh scrutiny of how automakers label and portray their advanced-driving technologies. In May, a motorist using Tesla Motors鈥?鈥淎utopilot鈥?semi-autonomous feature died in a crash when neither he nor the system applied the brakes as a tractor-trailer crossed the vehicle鈥檚 path. Tesla offers Autopilot as a 鈥渂eta鈥?technology, and reminds drivers they remain responsible for vehicle operations. Federal investigators are probing the incident and examining how the driver鈥檚 reliance on the technology contributed to the crash. In its guidance to automakers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration parses autonomous functionality into four levels. Level 1 automation involves specific control functions where the vehicle automatically assists with stability control or braking.
Level 2 involves the automation of at least two primary control functions designed to relieve the driver鈥檚 burden in controlling the vehicle. Examples might include adaptive cruise control combined with active lane centering. Level 3 automation contains vehicles that can handle all driving functions in limited scenarios; the driver is expected to be available to take occasional control. In Level 4 automation, the vehicle performs all driving functions and monitors road conditions for an entire trip. Good luck packaging all that into a marketing campaign. Yet that鈥檚 exactly the challenge automakers face. 鈥淲e need to be cognizant with our messaging to build this trust over time,鈥?said Kristin Kolodge, executive director of driver interaction and human-machine interface at J.D. Power. 鈥淭rust is extremely fragile. It takes years to build, seconds to break, and forever to repair. The Tesla incident is extremely unfortunate. Outside groups are ensuring that warning is followed. Consumer Reports, the Center for Auto Safety, Consumer Federation of America, and former NHTSA administrator Joan Claybrook signed a letter to the Federal Trade Commission earlier this week that called on the agency to take enforcement action against Mercedes-Benz. In a letter to FTC chairman Edith Ramirez, they wrote, 鈥渢he E-class does not meet the definition of either a fully or partially self-driving car, yet it is marketed in a way that a reasonable consumer would believe it does. 鈥淭he Future鈥?ad features Mercedes鈥?F015 autonomous research car. The ad intends to draw a connection between a vision of the self-driving future and the advanced driver-assistance features available on the E-class today, according to the spokesperson.

Mercedes-Benz is unveiling its highly environmentally-compatible BLUETEC technology in combination with a consumption-optimised four-cylinder engine for the first time at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. In terms of ensuring compliance with the even stricter EURO 6 emission standard, applicable to all new vehicles Europe-wide from 2015, the Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC shows the way ahead. Boasting an output of 125 kW (170 hp) and a peak torque of 400 Nm, the Vision C 220 BLUETEC consumes 5.5 litres of diesel per hundred kilometres. With the Vision C 220 BLUETEC, Mercedes-Benz is providing a taste of things to come as part of its BLUETEC initiative which was launched in the US last autumn. The initial impetus came from the market launch of the E 320 BLUETEC in North America in October 2006, which was timed to coincide with the introduction of low-sulphur diesel in that part of the world. A fuel consumption figure of 6.7 litres per hundred kilometres makes the E 320 BLUETEC one of the most economical vehicles in its class in the US. With the first four-cylinder BLUETEC model, Mercedes-Benz illustrates just how versatile this innovative technology can be.
Following the US launch, Mercedes Benz will also introduce BLUETEC in other markets. BLUETEC is a DaimlerChrysler-developed technology designed to effectively reduce diesel vehicle emissions, especially nitrogen oxides - the only exhaust-gas constituents that are still higher in diesel engines than they are in their petrol counterparts due to the design concept involved. One of the key requirements is to effectively minimise the nitrogen oxides before they are produced. This is why the Mercedes-Benz engine specialists focus on optimising the engines and their combustion processes. In terms of "hardware", the sophisticated four-cylinder powerplant in the Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC, like the standard-production engines, includes four valves per cylinder, third-generation common-rail direct injection, a turbocharger with a variable nozzle turbine and exhaust gas recirculation. A highly sensitive electronic engine management unit reacts precisely to an extremely wide range of operating conditions and, in so doing, optimises the combustion processes. The BLUETEC technology in the Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC still includes an oxidising catalytic converter, which reduces emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC), as well as a particulate filter. A modified NOx storage catalytic converter with a substantially extended service life, including patented on-board ammonia generation, is combined with an additional SCR catalytic converter to minimise nitrogen oxides. This process of exhaust-gas aftertreatment requires no additives. BLUETEC technology is based on Mercedes-Benz' vast pool of know-how and expertise in the construction of emission-optimised commercial vehicles. This now tried-and-trusted technology, first made available in early 2005, is today fitted in all the brand's commercial vehicle series. DaimlerChrysler has already delivered some 45,000 Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses featuring this innovative technology.
