2019 Mercedes A-Class Sedan Edition 1 Shows Off Copper Accents

2019 Mercedes A-Class Sedan Edition 1 Shows Off Copper Accents

Mercedes aficionados are no strangers to Edition 1 models taking into account these have been around for quite a while. Whenever a next-generation car receives its official debut, the Daimler-owned company decides to prepare a fancier version available from day one but only for about 12 months. Case in point, the A-Class Sedan Edition 1 will be on sale for roughly a year and will be compatible with all engines. In domestic market Germany, the more sophisticated take on Mercedes鈥?smallest sedan commands a hefty 鈧?,021 premium. You get more than just these obvious visual tweaks as the Edition 1 packs a more generous array of standard kit. It comes with the LED High Performance headlights, 64-color LED ambient lighting, multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel, and sports seats benefitting from adjustable head restraints. Then there are the copper accents, noticeable on the 19-inch alloy wheels as well as on the pins of the glitzy 鈥渄iamond鈥?front grille. The theme continues inside where the top of the dashboard has copper stitching, much like the central armrest and the seats.

Even the door panels come with copper seams, while the 鈥淓dition鈥?graphic on the passenger side dashboard has a similar look. Rounding off the tweaks are the velour floor mats with copper piping. The Edition 1 is actually based on the AMG Line version and comes with 鈥淓dition鈥?badging on the front fenders to further denote it鈥檚 not an ordinary A-Class Sedan. Mercedes hasn鈥檛 said whether this limited-run special version will be available in the United States as well or it will remain a European affair. In the U.S. where it will act as the company鈥檚 entry-level car by slotting underneath the CLA, the A-Class Sedan will go on sale early 2019 in A220 and A220 4Matic flavors. Both will share an inline-four turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 188 horsepower and 221 pound-feet (300 Newton-meters) of torque channeled to the front wheels or to both axles through a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission. It鈥檚 worth pointing out that Europeans can already order a beefier version by opting for the A250 / A250 4Matic with 224 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) on tap.

After an opening speech by Florian Muller, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, DaimlerChrysler Malaysia Sdn. Bhd, we were introduced to our trainers by the chief instructor, Matthias Kleinmichel. The trainers for ASE 2007 were Violetta Weykopf (Mrs.), Wim Daems and Jochen Hees. We started off with the emergency braking exercise. This was elementary and very comforting to those novice drivers since the starting attempts were done at 30kph! I reckoned the wet parking concrete enabled the ABS to work at such slow speed. We were all doing very well when we 鈥榞raduated鈥?to 70-75kph at the end of this exercise. Personally though, my first encounter with the W221 S300 L here was that of a very solid limo with truly excellent brakes! The 'new' C230 2.5 V6 was one smooth, refined and delightful drive. Above it all, the take-home message here is: KICK THAT BRAKE PEDAL REALLY HARD in an emergency stop!

Next up was the slalom which was pretty boring because the cones were quite widely placed and it was a plain driving-up-and-back exercise. The aim of this was to impress upon us the importance of light, smooth and easy steering manoeuvres for our daily safe driving. My impression here again was that the extended wheelbase S300 L was surprisingly agile and easy to handle, despite its length and size! However, its weight when around those cones couldn鈥檛 contain itself since you still feel there is still substantial mass being flung about. Our morning session ended with an exercise to counter understeer (the front wheels not going the way you intended) on the track. I have go to admit my body鈥檚 adrenaline rush hasn鈥檛 begun yet at this point鈥ell, okay, maybe just a little bit during the few bouts of the front tyres wailing. Last but not the least, the double-lane changing maneovre without braking was the most exhilarating of them all. Once again, the B170 was not cut out to easily execute sudden double lane changes manoeuvres due to lack of engine power and maybe, its light but less responsive EPS rack, I imagined to myself. We were too shy to confirm this fact with Jochen or Matthias. At the end of the day, we were impressed with the PRO-SAFE concepts, PRE-SAFE features, ABS, BAS and ESP fitted standard on all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. A certificates handing-over ceremony was helmed by Elaine Hew, Senior Marketing Manager, DCM Sdn.
