This Is When The BMW 8 Series Convertible Will Break Cover

Not long to wait.

BMW recently confirmed it will be bringing three brand new models to the LA Auto Show next month. Since the X7 has already been unveiled online, the Vision iNEXT in production form, high-performance X3 M and X4 M SUVs and the 8 Series Convertible are all likely candidates since BMW has already teased these models. According to company representatives speaking to CNET, the 8 Series Convertible will definitely break cover at the LA Auto Show. It’s hardly surprising, but at least we now have official confirmation.

While the BMW 8 Series Coupe is due to go on sale in the US later this year, its roofless sibling will arrive in dealers in spring 2019 according to CNET. Pricing hasn’t been confirmed but expect it to be a few thousand dollars more expensive than the M850i Coupe, which starts at $111,900.

Thanks to spy shots showing a completely undisguised model, we already know what the 8 Series Convertible will look like. It will have a soft top instead of a hard top to save weight, but we’re expecting it to be around 220 lbs to 275 lbs heavier than its fixed-roof sibling. Like the coupe, the M850i model will be powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 530 hp.

After the 8 Series Coupe and Convertible go on sale, BMW will launch the four-door 8 Series Gran Coupe, which CNET claims will arrive in US showrooms next summer. BMW representatives didn’t confirm when we can expect to see it break cover, but there’s a good chance it will make an appearance at next year’s Geneva Motor Show or New York Auto Show.

Full-fat M8 variants should also launch around the same time. Reports suggest it will use a more powerful version of the M5's 4.4-liter twin-turbo delivering 615 hp. Leaked documents also suggest a more hardcore M8 Competition model is coming.
