Mercedes can’t seem to stop going nuts when it comes to putting portal axles on any worthy recipient in its lineup. The G-Class was the most obvious first adopter, with the AMG G63 6x6 being this generation’s most rugged G-Class and the G63 4x42 taking its place once demand for the six-wheeled beast continued and supply dried up. And then there’s the truly wild E-Class All Terrain 4x42 that’s so out of this world Mercedes decided not to sell its science experiment. All the while, BMW has been quiet.
If it won’t answer Mercedes’ taunts, BMW tuner Manhart is here to save the day with its new MHX6 Dirt2. Using the X6 as a base car, Manhart reimagined the soft city slicker of an SUV as a diehard off-roader ready for an apocalypse that’s seemingly getting nearer by the day. Unlike its Mercedes competitors, the MHX6 Dirt2 doesn’t have portal axles. It does, however, use new pistons, connecting rods, and turbochargers to achieve an output of 887 horsepower and 885 lb-ft of torque, To handle all that power, Manhart reinforced the gearbox and rear axle before giving it a carbon air intake and an improved cooling system to handle the heat of Middle East, which it seems to be designed for.
The suspension makes it clear that this is no race track mogul, with a set of KW springs giving it more ground clearance so that the 305x40 BF Goodrich All Terrain tires can better claw the earth, calling on the limited-slip differential only when it’s needed. The hardware may as well only be there to back up the exterior’s tough talk. Bolted onto this striking mass of yellow X6 accented by black is a snorkel, roof rack, light bar, a trunk-mounted spare tire, underbody panels, a front guard, and a winch up front for good measure. The interior also sees some upgrades but Manhart isn’t ready to show us yet. Limited to just five units, the Manhart MHX6 Dirt2 fetches a price of €395,000 ($465,005). Better become a Saudi price quick.
