Limp-Home Mode - DTC P1121 and/or P1632 - AJ27 Engine - Adjust Throttle Cable
Issue:
Some of the above vehicles may default to limp home mode because the throttle cable is improperly adjusted. The condition will be accompanied by
diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P1121 and/or P1632 being stored in the memory of the Engine Control Module (ECM).
Action:
In case of a customer complaint of limp home mode on the above vehicles, use the PDU to check if DTC P1121 and/or P1632 is stored in the
(ECM). If so, use the PDU to clear the DTC and then reset the adjustment of the throttle cable using the following procedure:
Note:
The following procedure supersedes the adjustment procedure included in SRO 19.20.06 published in all versions of JTIS up to and including
JTIS 8. The active voltage reading for PPS 2 should range from 0.8 V at closed throttle to 2.7 V at WOT instead of the range given in the
electrical guide.
1. Open the hood and place covers over the fenders.
2. Load the PDU with Powertrain Data Logger.
3. Disconnect the PDU/MPA from the base station and connect it to the vehicle.

4. With "Disable Network Integrity Test - Yes/No" displayed on the PDU screen, select YES.
5. With new menu displayed, select "Engine Management".
6. Turn the ignition switch on.
7. On Data Logger, clear selected PIDs (Parameter IDentification), then select PPS 11 (Pedal Demand Sensor 1) and PPS2 (Pedal Demand
Sensor 2).
8. On V8 XJ Series models only. remove the bulkhead covers on both sides and the engine compartment rear cover.
9. On all vehicles, start recording data.
10. Cut, remove and discard the ratchet strap that secures the throttle cable to the bracket.
11. Release the threaded throttle cable retainer from the abutment bracket. Ensure that there is no tension on the cable.
12. Record the voltage readings for both sensors - PPS 11 and PPS2.
13. Partially insert the throttle cable adjustment nut into the abutment bracket.
14. Recheck the voltages for PPS 11 and PPS2.
If the voltages are higher than the readings in step 12, continue with step 15 If the voltages are the same as in step 12, continue with step 16.
15. Rotate the threaded retainer clockwise (as viewed from the front of the vehicle) until the same voltage readings are indicated as in Step 12.
Continue to turn through a partial turn until the sides of the threaded retainer are vertical. Turn through an additional 900. Then fully insert the
threaded retainer into the bracket. Continue with step 17.
16. If the voltages measured are the same, rotate the threaded retainer counterclockwise until the indicated voltage begins to increase. Then rotate
the threaded retainer clockwise through a partial turn until the sides are vertical. Turn through additional 90°. Then fully insert the threaded
retainer into the bracket. Continue with step 17.
17. Install a new tie strap on secure the threaded retainer to the abutment bracket.
18. Depress and release the throttle pedal through its full travel 20 times to 'settle' the cable. Check that the voltage readings now shown remain
the same as those shown in Step 15 or 16.
19. Check and adjust the throttle pedal stop using the PDU. This requires the PDU to be returned to the base station. Select Vehicle Set-up, then
Engine Setup. Connect PDU to vehicle, then select throttle stop setup.
20. If the required throttle opening cannot be achieved due a lack of adjustment range, a shorter length throttle stop stud may be necessary.
Measure the distance of the length of the hexagonal section (points A and B, Illustration 1). Select the next shortest mounting stud. Refer to
the Parts Information for the total of 4 different length studs are available.
Note:
It is unlikely that a new throttle stop mounting stud will be necessary since this component is hand selected and installed in production where a
test of full throttle has been performed and passed. Order parts on an as-required basis only.
21. On V8 XJ Series models only, reinstall the engine compartment rear cover and the bulkhead covers on both sides.

22. On all vehicles, remove the fender covers and close the hood.
23. Switch the ignition OFF. Disconnect the PDU from the vehicle and return the PDU to the base station.
