Lack of Power Assist - Steering Control Valve Actuator - Replacement Procedure

Issue:

Some 2000-01 MY S-TYPE vehicles within the above VIN range may experience a customer complaint of a lack of power assistance when steering.

It has been found that lack of power assistance when steering may be due to the power steering control valve actuator failing. Now that the power

steering control valve actuator is a serviceable item, it should be replaced.

Action:

On a customer complaint basis only, replace the power steering control valve actuator following the workshop procedure outlined below.

WORKSHOP PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect vehicle battery. (See workshop manual, JTIS CD ROM, section 414-01).

Warning:

After the battery has been disconnected, wait for one minute for the air bag system to disarm.

2. Raise vehicle on lift.

3. Clean exterior of actuator and surrounding gear surfaces to prevent internal contamination of steering system.

4. Disconnect power steering control valve actuator electrical connector (Illustration 1).

5. In a counter clockwise direction, loosen actuator from gear housing using wrench flats at bottom of actuator (Illustration 2).

Caution:

Never use a wrench or other tool on the actuator body or any location other than the wrench flats.

6. Inspect housing thread, 0-ring mating surface and actuator bore on gear housing for damage or contamination and clean as required.

7. Inspect new actuator 0-ring for contamination or damage.

8. Hand start new actuator into gear housing by turning in clockwise direction.

Caution:

Never start the threads using a power tool as they are at a fine pitch and are likely to cross easily, resulting in power steering fluid leaks.

9. Tighten the new actuator to 27-33 Nm (20-24 lb ft) using wrench flats provided at base of actuator.

Caution:

Never use a wrench or other tool on the actuator body or any location other than the wrench flats.

10. Hand-rotate actuator body to align connector with wiring harness.

11. Reconnect power steering control valve actuator electrical connector.

12. Lower vehicle.

13. Reconnect vehicle battery (See workshop manual, JTIS CD-ROM, section 414-01)

14. Reposition luggage compartment carpet.

15. Close luggage compartment.

16. Fill and bleed steering system as described in Workshop Manual, JTIS CD-ROM section 211-00, General Information, General Procedures,

System Bleeding.
