There will be two new engines in the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class lineup this year. The new powertrains both feature twin-turbocharging and smaller displacements than the engines they replace, while also improving fuel economy. First is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML400 4Matic, which replaces the outgoing ML550. The ML550 had a 402-hp V-8 engine displacing 4.7-liters, but it sucked down fuel with reckless abandon, achieving efficiency ratings of 14/19/16 mpg (city/highway/combined). The 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML400 4Matic uses an aluminum-block 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 making 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, which returns 18/22/20 mpg (city/highway/combined). A seven-speed automatic transmission comes standard, as does an engine stop-start feature. Yes, that鈥檚 less power than the V-8, but the fuel-economy bump is more than welcome. The other new powertrain fits in the 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML250 BlueTec, which replaces the ML350 BlueTec. This diesel-powered SUV adopts a 2.1-liter twin-turbo inline-four engine making 200 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque 鈥?already available in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and GLK-Class. Like the aforementioned ML400, the ML250 also adds stop-start as standard.
Although it鈥檚 not as powerful as the old ML350 Bluetec鈥檚 240-hp V-6, which made 455 lb-ft of torque, the new engine鈥檚 smaller size means that the 2015 ML250 BlueTec weighs almost 300 pounds less than before. Official EPA fuel economy ratings are as yet unavailable, but the outgoing ML350 BlueTec (pictured) was rated for 20/28/23 mpg (city/highway/combined). We expect the ML250 Bluetec to hit the 30-mpg highway mark. Two other versions of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML stay the same. The ML350 continues with its 302-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 engine, and a choice between rear-wheel-drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive. The ML63 AMG packs a 518-hp punch from its twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 engine. 63,825 including destination fees, although prices for other models have yet to be announced. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML350 hits showrooms this month, the ML400 goes on sale toward the end of August, the ML250 BlueTec goes on sale in early September, and the ML63 AMG coming in late September.
The best way to look at Mercedes-Benz鈥檚 classes is by examining them as vehicle subsets as opposed to single models with different trim levels. Because each vehicle in a class can be separated into trims of its own. For instance, the E550 in the E-Class can be configured as either a 4MATIC Sedan, Cabriolet or Coupe, while the G63 in the G-Class can be either a regular G63 or G63 AMG SUV. That鈥檚 why comparing vehicles within a class makes a lot of sense. In this feature, we are taking a look at the 2014 Mercedes-Benz ML350 crossover SUV to see how it stacks up against the newly-introduced ML400 model. The difference in model years is intentional since you can still find the 2014 ML350 for a solid price. The Mercedes-Benz ML350 is at the very bottom of the M-Class鈥?list, meaning that it鈥檚 the weakest entry in the lineup, engine-wise.
Of course, being a lower-tier vehicle means very little in this case since you still get to enjoy all the Mercedes perks. One of them is the quiet interior, accompanied by a smooth ride and a selection of two excellent V6 engines. You also get to enjoy a 7,200-pound tow rating and the vehicle鈥檚 sleek design. However, there are big two real problems here, and they apply to the entire lineup - the lack of a seven-seat setup and the vehicle鈥檚 lofty price. You get a choice of two V6 engines. The 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 engine serves up the impressive torque amount of 455 pound-feet. No matter what engine you pick, the ML350 still gets less horsepower than the ML400, which produces 329 horses. The 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6, which can produce 455 pound-feet of torque, offers only 240 horsepower. The 3.5-litre V6 produces less torque than the ML400鈥檚 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged version, which gets 354 pound-feet of torque.
