A/C Odor - Applying Odor Control Treatment - Procedure
Issue:
Odor from the vehicle air conditioning system can be caused when condensation mixes with airborne pollutants, resulting in biological reactions that

may lead to the formation of unpleasant odors. In turn when the ventilation blower is switched on, these odors will be forced into vehicle passenger
compartment. This bulletin provides a procedure for applying an odor control treatment.
Action:
In case of a customer complaint on a 2000 MY-ON S-TYPE, perform the following procedure:
APPLYING ODOR CONTROL TREATMENT
1. Verify that the customer complaint is valid i.e. that odor is not from an external source but is in fact coming from air conditioning system.
2. Use WDS to check for any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
3. Open hood and place covers over the fenders.
4. Install suitable floor coverings over front carpets to collect any liquid spillage during operation.
5. Install drain tray under vehicle to collect any surplus liquid from condensation drain tubes.
6. Remove wiper arms.
7. Remove leaf screen finisher.
8. Remove and inspect cabin air (pollen) filter cartridge. If contaminated, discard and replace with new cartridge when application of odor
treatment has been completed.
9. Disconnect air conditioning (A/C) compressor electrical connector.
10. Attach exhaust fume extractor pipes to exhaust tail pipes.
11. Ensure handbrake is fully applied and transmission selector lever is in "P" position.
12. Start engine and set the A/C controls as follows: - Set driver temperature control to 'HI' selecting maximum fans (if not already engaged) push
and hold 'recirculation' button until 2 audible chirps are heard (latched into the continuous position). Open all front and rear vents, lower one
window approximately 15 mm (0.15 in) and ensure all doors closed.
13. Let engine idle for 20 minutes to blow dry hot air over evaporator to remove any residual moisture.
14. Open door and press the recirculation button once to unlatch recirculation control to revert to external air supply, then close door.
15. Shake bottle of A/C odor control solution to ensure thorough mixing.
Warning:
The air conditioning odor control solution is an irritant and must be handled with care, gloves and eye protection must be worn when using
this solution and any spillage must be removed with water.
16. Connect applicator tool to a workshop airline.
Caution:
The compressed air supply should be set to 70 psi +/- 20 psi (4.7 bar +/- 1.4 bar).
17. Remove screw cap from bottle of A/C odor control solution and screw bottle to cap attached to the applicator.
18. Insert applicator tool into fan intake duct so nozzle points in direction of air flow.
Note:
Do not rest nozzle tip against gauze screen, as this will disturb atomization.

19. With engine and ventilation system still running, open valve on applicator tool to spray odor control solution into system (Illustration 1).
Note:
The odor control should be applied in bursts of 3 seconds with a 2 second interval, until entire contents of the bottle is used. This will
provide sufficient solution without the surplus leaking from the ventilation outlets.
Warning:
During the application of the odor control solution, no person or animal should be allowed to remain in the vehicle.
20. Let engine and A/C fans run for a further 2 minutes to obtain a higher rate of dispersion.
21. Immediately after odor control solution bottle has been emptied, clean the applicator and bottle by flushing it out with clean water.
Note:
The tip of applicator nozzle should be directed into an appropriate drain.
22. Stop the engine and A/C fans, and leave the vehicle for 20 minutes.
23. Repeat steps 11 and 12.
24. Dry and cure product in this mode for approximately 20 minutes.
25. Open door and press recirculation button once to unlatch recirculation control.
26. After approximately 30 seconds, reselect recirculation mode and check operation of recirculation flap.
27. Switch off ignition and reconnect A/C compressor electrical connector.
28. Inspect and install cabin air filter cartridge. If contaminated, discard and replace with new a cartridge since a blocked filter can cause
unpleasant odors.
Note:
Check service history since the cabin air filter cartridge is to be changed at every 10,000 mile (16,000 km) service interval.
29. Install leaf screen finisher.
30. Install wiper arms.
31. Remove drain tray and exhaust fume extractor.
32. Remove front carpet protection covers.
33. Remove hood protection covers, close hood.
34. Check all A/C control functions.
35. Use WDS to check for any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and remove if any DTCs stored.
Caution:
It should be noted that all displaced oils and fluids must be disposed of locally, ensuring compliance with local authority legislation and
health and safety guidelines.
