For its 40th anniversary, the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been presented with special modifications, a G manufaktur personalization package and a new testing ground. In 1975 the carmaker made a decision to launch the Gelandewagen into series production. A new plant was built in Graz, Austria. The model is assembled manually. 80% vehicles purchased within 40 years are in operation today. When this luxury off-road SUV entered the market in the spring of 1979, it was available with a choice of four engines from 72 to 156 hp. For hard top modifications, they offered both short and long wheelbase. Customers could buy a convertible too. The G-Wagen was updated in 1989 for the first time, and nameplated the 鈥淕-Class鈥?in 1993. In numerous special-purpose cases, the vehicle has been used in police, army, fire and other rescue services. By the way, the 鈥減opemobile鈥?is a modified Gelandewagen. 1999 was a new milestone for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, when an AMG modification with a 5.5-liter 354-hp V8 went on sale. In 2002, a G63 AMG set new standards. A 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine of 444 hp was first used for the G-Class followed by other Performance Studio鈥檚 projects.

A G65 AMG with a 6.0-liter 612-hp twin-turbo V12 remains the most potent. Today, 40% sales from the G-Class family fall on the G63 AMG model with a 5.5-liter 544-hp V8 engine. Mercedes has released three special editions equipped with a 330-hp diesel or a gasoline V8 that produces 422 hp. A hot version is available as well. The range of the G manufaktur individualization package is so huge, that in theory vehicles can be produced for several decades without two identical. For the seats alone, there are 64 combinations of upholstery and designs. There are trims for handles (leather-covered), steering wheels, etc. 34 colors are provided for exterior. In the near future, the G-Class Experience Center will be officially opened at the former airport. The new site offers customers to test technical features, to further develop driving skills in extreme conditions. The area of the new center is 10 hectares.
