CONDITION SUMMARY:
CORRECT REPAIR FOR FRONT SEATS THAT ARE INOPERATIVE, NOISY, OR JUDDER
Situation:
Lack of lubrication or motor failure can result in front seats that are inoperative, noisy, or judder when adjustment is attempted.
Action:
Determining which front seat track axis is at fault will facilitate the repair:
^ Front height rise or cushion extension - Follow Procedure 1.
^ Rear height rise - Follow Procedure 2.
^ Fore/aft - Follow Procedure 3.
^ Motor stepping (inching) - memory potentiometers/hall sensors - Follow Procedure 4. Should a customer experience the listed electrical seat
faults, follow the relevant Repair Procedure.

Procedure 1 - Front Height Rise or Cushion Extension Corrective Action
PROCEDURE 1: FRONT HEIGHT RISE OR CUSHION EXTENSION CORRECTIVE ACTION
NOTE:
Global Technical Reference (GTR) lookup sequence is as follows:
GTR Home> NAS > Service Information/X350 - XJ/2007 (or XK or S-TYPE)> Workshop Manuals > Bookmark "Body and Paint/Body
and Paint/510-10 Seating> Link "Front Seat (76.70.01)".
1. If it is determined that the motor is faulty, refer to GTR section 501-10 (76.70.01) and install a new front seat base.
2. If the seat is juddering or has noisy seat operation refer to GTR section 501-10 (76.70.01) and remove the front seat.
3. Transfer the seat onto a suitable work surface.
4. Undo and remove the seat switch panel securing screws, and displace switch panel from the seat base.
5. Check that grease is present at the front tilt slide-way area and, if installed, cushion extension slide-way area. (Figure 1)
6. If no grease is observed, apply grease and test as follows:
^ If cushion extension function is installed, apply grease to cushion extension motor gearbox pivot area. (Figure 2)

^ If cushion extension function is installed, apply grease to cushion extension operating screw. (Figure 3)
^ Install seat switch and panel assembly to seat base; install and tighten securing screws.
^ Refer to GTR Section 501-10 and install seat.
^ Operate seat to extremes of travel five times.
7. If grease was present during the initial inspection or if the fault is still apparent after grease application, refer to GTR Section 501-10 and
install a new front seat base.
Procedure 2 - Rear Height Rise Corrective Action
PROCEDURE 2: REAR HEIGHT RISE CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. Inspect for grease and gearbox damage as follows.
^ Refer to GTR section 501-10 and remove the affected front seat.
^ Transfer the seat onto a suitable work surface.
^ Unhook bungee cord from tray. (Figure 4)
^ Undo and remove the motor gearbox plastic cover securing screws, and remove the plastic cover. (Figure 5)

^ Undo and remove the motor securing screws and displace the motor from drive bar. (Figure 6)
^ Visually check the gearbox for content of grease and inspect for damage to the worm spindle and bushings.
2. If there is no grease and there is no damage to the worm spindle and bushings, perform the following:
^ Apply grease to the worm spindle (worm and drive bar).
^ Install motor to drive bar.
^ Install and tighten motor securing screws.
^ Install the motor gearbox plastic cover.
^ Install and tighten securing screws.
^ Hook the bungee cord to the tray.
^ Refer to GTR section 501-10 and install the seat.
^ Operate the seat to extremes of travel five times.
3. If there is damage to the worm spindle or bushings, or after carrying out step 2 the fault is still apparent, perform the following:
^ Refer to GTR section 501-10 and remove the affected front seat.
^ Transfer the seat onto a suitable work surface.
^ Unhook bungee cord from tray. (Figure 4)
^ Undo and remove the motor gearbox plastic cover securing screws, and remove the plastic cover. (Figure 5)

^ Undo and remove the gearbox mounting bolts and seat pivot bolt. (Figure 8)
^ Push seat track down (to gain access) and remove the two spindle housing bolts.
^ Remove the front seat height adjustment motor assembly. (Figure 9)
^ Install the new front seat height adjustment motor assembly.
^ Install the gearbox mounting bolts and tighten to 21 Nm (+/- 2 Nm) [15.5 lbf ft (+/- 1.5 lbf ft)].
^ Install the two spindle housing bolts and tighten to 11 Nm (+/- 1 Nm) [8.1 lbf ft (+/- 0.7 lbf ft)].
^ Install the seat pivot bolt and tighten to 23 Nm (+/- 2.5 Nm) [17 lbf ft (+/- 1.8 lbf ft)].
^ Secure the front seat backrest cover lower tension straps.
^ Refer to GTR Section 501-10 and install the front seat to the vehicle.
NOTE:
This procedure requires IDS DVD105 with the latest Patch Files loaded or later.
CAUTION:
A Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during diagnosis and module configuration.
4. Update Seat Software for XK (X150) vehicles as follows:
^ Connect the Midtronics PSC-550 power supply to the vehicle battery.
^ Connect IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session, by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle.
^ Follow the IDS prompts to read the vehicle configuration.
^ When prompted Do you wish to read diagnostic trouble codes? select NO and then press 'tick' to continue.
^ When the Content Model is displayed select Vehicle Configuration tab.
^ Select from the menu 'Set-up and Configuration'.
^ Select Seats from the expanded menu.
^ Select 'Drivers seat calibration' or 'Passenger's seat calibration'.

^ Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task.
^ When the task is completed, exit the current session.
^ Disconnect IDS and the battery charger/power supply.
^ Operate the seat to extremes of travel five times and verify proper operation.
5. Update Seat Software for S-TYPE and XJ vehicles as follows:
^ Connect the Midtronics PSC-550 power supply to the vehicle battery.
^ Connect IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session, by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle.
^ When prompted Do you wish to read configuration information from the vehicle?, select NO and then press 'tick' to continue.
^ When prompted Vehicle Configuration Confirmation?, select YES and then press tick to continue.
^ When prompted Do you wish to read diagnostic trouble codes?, select NO and then press 'tick' to continue.
^ When the Content Model is displayed select Vehicle Configuration tab.
^ Select from the menu Set-up and Configuration, and then press 'tick' to continue.
^ Select seat calibration, from the menu and then press 'tick' to continue.
^ Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task.
^ When the task is completed, exit the current session.
^ Disconnect IDS and the battery charger/power supply.
^ Operate the seat to extremes of travel five times.
6. If the fault is still apparent on any vehicle, refer to GTR section 510-10 and install a new front seat base.
Procedure 3 - Fore/AFT Motor Replacement
PROCEDURE 3: FORE/AFT MOTOR REPLACEMENT
1. Refer to GTR section 501-10 and remove the front seat.
2. Transfer the seat onto a suitable work surface.
3. Unhook bungee cord from tray. (Figure 10)
NOTE:
If there is a green label on the motor, use green label motor kit (C2C 29234).
If there is a silver label on the motor, use silver label motor kit (C2C 29235).

4. Check the color of the identity label on the faulty motor. (Figure 11)
5. Undo and remove the motor securing screws. (Figure 12)
6. Slide the motor with the long flexible drive bar away from the mounting bracket and disengage the short drive bar.
7. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove motor. (Figure 13)
8. Remove the long flexible drive bar.
9. Remove the short drive bar.
10. Place the new short drive bar to front.
11. Grease both ends of the short drive bar.
12. Install the new short drive bar to the gearbox.
13. Place the new long flexible drive bar to front.
14. Grease both ends of the new long flexible drive bar.
15. Install the new long flexible drive bar to the gearbox.
16. Install the new motor to the long flexible drive bar.
17. Connect the motor electrical connector. (Figure 13)
18. Reposition and fully seat the new motor onto the short drive bar.

19. Check to ensure the flexible drive bar is correctly aligned with no kinks or distortions. (Figure 14)
20. Align motor, install and tighten motor securing screws.
21. Hook bungee cord to the tray. (Figure 15)
22. Refer to GTR section 501-10 and install the seat.
NOTE:
This procedure requires IDS DVD105 with the latest Patch Files loaded or later.

23. Update Seat Software for XK (X150) vehicles as follows:
^ Connect the Midtronics PSC-550 power supply to the vehicle battery.
^ Connect IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session, by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle.
^ Follow the IDS prompts to read the vehicle configuration.
^ When prompted Do you wish to read diagnostic trouble codes? select NO and then press 'tick' to continue.
^ When the Content Model is displayed select Vehicle Configuration tab.
^ Select from the menu Set-up and Configuration.
^ Select Seats from the expanded menu.
^ Select Drivers seat calibration or Passenger's seat calibration.
^ Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task.

^ When the task is completed, exit the current session.
^ Disconnect IDS and the battery charger/power supply.
^ Operate the seat to extremes of travel five times and verify proper operation.
24. Update Seat Software for S-TYPE and XJ vehicles as follows:
^ Connect the Midtronics PSC-550 power supply to the vehicle battery.
^ Connect IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session, by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle.
^ When prompted Do you wish to read configuration information from the vehicle?, select NO and then press 'tick' to continue.

25. If the fault is still apparent on any vehicle, refer to GTR section 510-10 and install a new front seat base.
Procedure 4 - Motor Stepping (Inching)
PROCEDURE 4 - MOTOR STEPPING (INCHING)
NOTE:
This procedure requires IDS DVD105 with the latest Patch Files loaded or later.
CAUTION:
A Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during diagnosis and module configuration.
1. If the seat is stepping or juddering during adjustment, update Seat Software for XK (X150) vehicles as follows:
^ Connect the Midtronics PSC-550 power supply to the vehicle battery.
^ Connect IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session, by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle.
^ Follow the IDS prompts to read the vehicle configuration.
^ When prompted Do you wish to read diagnostic trouble codes? select NO and then press 'tick' to continue.
^ When the Content Model is displayed select Vehicle Configuration tab.
^ Select from the menu Set-up and Configuration.
^ Select Seats from the expanded menu.
^ Select Drivers seat calibration or Passenger's seat calibration.
^ Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task.
^ When the task is completed, exit the current session.
^ Disconnect IDS and the battery charger/power supply.
^ Operate the seat to extremes of travel five times and verify proper operation.
